I know in some movies i watch i admire the strong women who are main characters.
In anime i cant really think of a lot. i did look up to utena untispoiler[she slept with anthys brother] Nana Ozaki is a strong women who does her own thing her way and dont care what anyone thinks of her. plus she's loyal to her friends like Hachi (nana komatsu). Now im not talking anime crushes or anything but im talking anime character you admire as strong willed people that you wish or became because of them. like a role model. |

I would have to say a character i really admire is Yang Wenli from Legend of Galactic Heroes. Despite being a military genius, and his quick rise to power, and the peoples love and admiration, he always had a humble disposition and never took ahold of the political power that was always available to him. Much of his philosophical viewpoints on humanity and human behavior really were very astute in my opinion. A great role model in anime.

Really? I'm a little surprised by this. I think that even on casual perusal there seem to be quite a few. Lady Iboshi from Mononoke Hime comes to mind immediately, not to mention San, of course. How about Ryo Hayakawa of Princess Nine? I know that if I have daughters or neices some day, I'd like to introduce them to this show, as all the female leads are wonderful characters. |

I adore seeing strong women on screen, especially in anime. I've often expressed admiration for both Utena and Arjuna's Juna in threads like this, this (a topic similar to yours), and this one.
I understand why someone might not look up to Utena after spoiler[she slept with Akio], but I'm glad that happened. It simply means Utena doesn't pull herself into the strict tomboy stereotypes; she has a very human, feminine side as well. And, just like everyone, she makes mistakes. But she was able to make up for it in the end by spoiler[saving Anthy]. She's definitely one of my top role models. I wish I had her confidence! And, as always, I love and respect Juna more than any other anime character. I feel like she has taught me so much, and I know I've even become much more conscious of the way I live my life and interact with people and the environment after watching Arjuna. She's an amazing person (or would be, if she existed) and the perfect role model. Other young women in anime I admire are Yukino Miyazawa in Kare Kano, who starts off as a selfish, self-proclaimed "queen of vanity" and gradually learns about love and the value of being yourself. She makes an remarkable transformation. I also look up to Kino from Kino's Journey, as she thoughtfully gains insight from all her encounters in various countries and learns about life and loss. Finally, (this is kind of out of left field compared to the others), I think Usagi Tsukino, otherwise known as Sailor Moon, is a fantastic role model for young girls. She can teach them that a person doesn't have to be perfect to save the world. Even if you cry all the time and get horrible grades in school, there's still a good, pure-hearted person beneath the cowardly exterior. I think that's a great lesson for many young girls, and that's why so many connected so strongly with the Sailor Moon TV show, just like I did as a 10-year-old. |

I think Monkey D. Luffy is an really inspiring character. He always puts his friends first and always follows onwards towards his dream, no matter what anybody says. He also has a collosal (sp?) will and will always defend his friends, no matter what. Heck, he is not even as big of an idiot as people make him out to be. Luffy has always beeb my favorite anime character in general and for very good reason.

Wow most of those i love especially miyazawa of kare kano. i just forgot. she made me want to change too. and sailor moon. OH MY im hitting myself for not reconizing that about her. |

the character i admire the most is Souchirou Nagi from Tenjho Tenge. the reason i admire him is because he never gave up what he has been trying to do since he was little, become the best fighter he can be. just like me in RL
i also admire Renton Thurston from Eureka 7, he protected the women that he loves the most. he never gave up until the end and me and my wife really felt something in this anime. |

In my view, the character that I admire the most as a role model is Sora Naegino of Kaleido Star, mainly because she approaches a situation with an optimistic mindset despite heavy odds. She always sees the good in most of the people she performes with, even if they give her a cold shoulder or scolf at her and her abilities. She also has the uncanny ability to inspire her colleagues to do their best even in the more dire of situations, all the while sacrificing a part of herself and her dreams.

I completely agree. Kino is basically my perfect character in just about every way. She's wiser than the hills, atheltic and strong, a genius in more than just her marksmanship, she deals with people exceptionally well, has an excellent sense of justice, is a genuinely caring person, fears nothing, is curious about the world, and at the same time, is still human and feminine at heart (even if she doesn't always show it). She's way too perfect to be a real person, but if you're gonna have a role model, why choose one that's flawed?

Ok, sure I am infatuated with Revy from Black Lagoon, but she could also fall into the role-model category: Revy is amoral, violent, short-tempered and has zero tolerance for BS, plus she's a gun freak. That's pretty much me, though she looks far sexier in a pair of short-shorts.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single male lead character whith which I can relate. |

I can think of several male anime characters that I can sort of relate to....although I have to admit none of those are particularly good role models 
Hmm. Well, one with his heart and his ethics in the right place might be Albert de Morcerf spoiler[(or Mondego)] in Gankutsuou? [edit: or maybe Reki in Haibane Renmei?] [edit2: Ah, now I know - Katou in Gantz!] |

Laughing man from ghost in the shell SAC.
I love his abslote freedom. He has a very wide view over the enviroment he lives in, tries to make it better, but never chains him self down by blindly following an idealogy. He also is not afraid to trust others and depends on indivisuals rather than a system. Also Rakka from haibane renmei. She is a great friend and can honestly care about others. My first impresion was that this character cant have control over her life. but in fact, she does a great job in diffrent cicumstances and is strong inside. |

Okay, here's my choices:
Usagi from Sailor Moon - yup, that whiny crybaby herself! Yeah, she bitches and moans about being a Sailor Senshi and having to go and fight. Yeah, she sucks at school and periodically stuffs her foot into her mouth. But...she does step up to the plate and delivers the finishing blow. And she does try hard to improve herself scholastically. So what that it's so she looks better to Mamoru, at least she's trying. Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura - Again, another who really doesn't want to be doing what she has to do but, by golly, she does try...even when she's sick! And she makes it through that difficult lesson of learning the difference between like and like. Finally Hakkai from Saiyuki - no matter what life throws at you and no matter how badly your life sucks, there's no reason to be uncivilized about the whole thing! I think that Aname Misa from Death Note is a very stronged-willed character. She is truly the iconic "strong woman" character. Yep, she definitely is.

Hiraga Saito from Zero no Tsukaima. He's just an average Japanese boy, but he's really tough/courageous with no respect for social class distinctions, aristocracy, wealth, power, or even natural gifts; he does what he wants, when he wants, and he's not afraid to take what he wants by force. In the language of Yotsuba, I'd call him a "GAR" character, and someone I'd actually model my own behaviour after.
