Recently, through the "Bountiful Bargains" deal at Rightstuf, I ordered some anime DVDs. Among those DVDs were Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi and Gatekeepers 21. The thing is, I've never seen the original Ai Yori Aoshi and the original Gatekeepers, nor have I bought them, yet. Anyway, I was wondering if that would be a problem. For those 2 series, can I still watch, understand, and enjoy them easily without many (or any) problems, without having seen their prequels? Or will I have to wait until I get *or at least, watch) Ai Yori Aoshi and Gatekeepers before watching the ones I ordered? Are they direct continuations of the prequels? Or are they totally new and different stories involving the same old characters? Or what? Thanks.
Edit: One more thing, also from my "Bountiful Bargains" order, I purchased Sugar, A Little Snow Fairy. ANN's Encyclopedia says it's for all ages, but according to Rightstuf, it's rated 13+. Anyway, I'm curious, exactly how kiddie is the show? I bought it for my little sister for Christmas (way in advance, though) and I was wondering if it's appropriate for her. I saw a trailer of it once on a Tenchi Muyo OVA DVD if mine, which is what introduced me to it, and from what the trailer displayed, it looked very girly and kidde--like something she'd like. So, anyway, is Sugar, A Little Snow Fairy as girly and kiddie as it seems. Is it appropriate for her? What do you think? Thanks. |

Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi is pretty standalone, but I do recommend watching the first season first because everything is built upon it. Not sure about Gatekeepers 21
Don't worry about Sugar: A Little Snow Fairy. It is completely safe for kids to watch. Mini-sized fairies, an elementary school kid, and lots of fun. I don't remember a single scene that warranted a PG-13 rating. |

As for your Ai Yori Aoshi question, I think you can watch Enishi without ever seeing the first one. I think someone here had replied once that they had only seen Enishi and thought it was good.
However, what I think is the problem, is that you'd be missing the best part of the story (In the anime anyway, the manga gets better as it goes). However for Enishi, when I first saw it it felt like all 13 episodes were just filler. The set up for the current situation in Enishi is all in the first season and where you can truly get to enjoy the characters. Especially learning the leads', Kaoru and Aoi's, backgrounds and where everything got started. It's very sweet and well told. This is probably my favorite Harem type story because even though a lot of elements are introduced the main character is not completely useless and is very different from the lead males you usually see in these types of shows. The story is very character driven in fact, and I think these great character developements are a key part of what you'd be missing if you just skipped ahead to Enishi. I think they added the disks from the first season to the special so if you decide to lose anything you should check them out. And if you can't find space for them all remember that you can add bargain bin items on top of your order and the volume one with cd combo is available for only 9.99 in the bin. I've been looking at all the prices because even though I though I had a good deal when I bought them, this is so much better. I don't know anything about the other series you mentioned but for Sugar, I've read it's totally cute.. oops Azathrael already answered. |

I wouldn't recomend watching Enishi until you've seen Ai Yori Aoshi as it would seem pretty shallow if you don't know anything about the characters and how they came to be living togather. As for Gatekeepers 21 it's in the same universe as the first but has an entirely new cast and is pretty stand alone.

That would probably be me. I saw Enishi, and still haven't seen the original, but it's definitely one of my top harems (which I generally don't like, for the record). It's got a special something in it, probably the fact that not only is there no real question of which girl he's going to get, he already has her. This alone removes so much unnecessary angst from the show it allows a harem to be enjoyable. A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - It's as "sugary" as the name sounds. It just oozes kawaii out of pores you didn't know you had. The reason it probably got a PG-13 or w/e rating is simply because of how sad it gets in the last arc. I felt like an immature school girl for crying at that show, but I couldn't help it, it's really really well done. If anything... it's too kawaii. |

I agree with Kruzer. Enishi looks even better than the original and is nice, unambiguous harem fun, but it's also bland compared to the original series and doesn't delve into the character backgrounds and relationships as much. You can probably make sense of Enishi without seeing the original, but the original at its best is better in its storytelling than Enishi. (Still think the original's first 3.5 episodes is one of the best periods of any harem series ever, as it beautifully justifies the dynamics of even its improbable set-up gimmick.)

It's been awhile since I've seen Gatekeepers & Gatekeepers 21, but if I remember correctly, you do need some knowledge of the first to understand some issues in the second.
They are still good though. |

As others have said, Sugar is absolutely safe for a child. I just checked my discs and the rating on them is 3 and up, which is way more accurate that a 13 and up. (I'm thinking someone screwed up in putting in the info on that one.)
If you haven't already picked it up, I'd recommend you get the special that was made too. It's part sequel, part flashback. You don't have to have it to fully enjoy the series, but it's a nice epilogue. Here's the encyclopedia link: anime#2573 There was a special edition release of this but the only difference between the disc-only and SE was a pair of shampoo bottles. (Makes sense if you've watched the series.) |

Sugar: Too cutesy for me, and I can stand a lot of cute junk.
![]() The only ever so slightly objectionable thing was a bit of the "dirty old man" gag, but I don't recall anything being truly offensive whatsoever. Ai Yori Aoshi/Enishi: I'm waiting for my copy of both series. Gatekeepers: I really enjoyed the fun and silly first series (8 volumes) but the Gatekeepers 21 series didn't do anything for me whatsoever. I suppose you would probably benefit in knowing what's going on from the first series, but everything Gatekeepers has to offer is exhausted in the first 8 volumes. Oh, but I did like the first opening theme in G21 (they switched it from opening to ending for some reason thereafter). |

I don't know about Ai Yori Aoshi, but if you look in a certain section of my anime you will see that Gatekeepers didn't work for me. I guess it was a little too kiddy or something, anyway but that's just my opinion.

I highly recommend you watch Gate Keepers (TV) before 21. I wrote both of the plot summaries for the Encyc. entries and there's a time difference of 32 years.
Withing those 32 years, 21 includes recurring villains, and even a former villain that became a good guy throughout that time. But you won't know squat about him or his past without first seeing the TV series. It's a lot like the transition from Kenshin TV to the OVAs. It's a lot lighter and even a bit cheesy in the series with its cookie-cutter and predictable story and characters, though I found it pretty fun. And in 21, you get a much darker feel, but not as depressing in the sense that Tsuiokuhen was. Still a pretty entertaining franchise if you like shounen, though. |

Ok, so from what I'm hearing, I can watch Enishi and 21 without having seen the prequels because they are somewhat stand-alone, but it'd be better if I did see the originals first. Right?
And, as for Sugar, a Little Snow Fairy, from what I'm hearing, it'll be fine for my little sister because the worse thing in it is just that fact that it's a little sad near the end, and other than that, it's fine. Right? Anyway, thanks, guys. ![]() |

I watched Gatekeepers 21 first. It did not affect my enjoyment of the series, although some in-references obviously passed me by, but it does reveal spoilers for Gatekeepers if you ever wanted to watch that later.

Wait a minute, since my order hasn't yet shipped (everything is on backorder), do you think I should just try to replace Enishi and 21 with something else I'd want, so I can watch it immediately, rather than having to wait to buy and watch their prequels first? Or do you think I should just stick with those and just buy the other ones some other time? Also, do any of you know, how was Popotan and Tsukihime, Lunar Legend. Those were some other DVDs I ordered, but I pretty much ordered them blindly because it took so few DVDs to complete them and they looked cool (from ANN's Encyclopedia, at least)? What are your thoughts?
P.S. Since, I listed nearly every series I bought I figured I'd just say the last one for the hell of it. I also ordered Melody of Oblivion. I saw a trailer of it on one of my anime DVDs and it looked really cool. I looked it up int he Encyclopedia and it still looked cool. So, I bought it. I'm dying to see that one. Any thoughts or comments on that one, either? Edit: I just said the new post above mine (this one). Thanks, Shiroi Hane. I guess it won't be such a big deal if I see those first, but maybe I should wait, because I do plan on seeing the original...eventually. LOL! |

Actually, I just tried to order GK21 and I couldn't find it in the store anywhere (I recently purchased some R3s and the English subs are appaling).
