That's great news.
This release should please everyone but there will always be someone to find a reason to complain.. Don't like the Pioneer Dub? You have the Streamline one. Don't like Streamline? There's the Pioneer dub. Don't like either one? There's Japanese. Don't have a blu-ray player? There's DVD. Don't like DVD? Buy it on Blu-ray. What is there left from this release to complain about? |

They haven't mentioned whether or not it'll have any special features. I'm sure there will be some belly-achers if it comes out barebones. And others will complain simply because they don't like Akira. |

Sadly, this is true - someone will always have something to complain about. Let's not rile them up before they get here though, and enjoy the peace.
All kidding aside, this is great news. I like the movie (never have read the original manga though) a good amount, and I've always been curious to see the Streamline dub, so this is definitely a double-dip purchase for me. |

Unfortunately, I know a guy who, for whatever dumb reason, is convinced that FUNimation is ruining the anime industry and killing other companies from under the table. Can you tell he has no idea how modern business works? Because the stuff he's accusing FUNimation of is completely illegal. I won't spell his name outright, but me and my buddies refer to his as T_L for short. EDIT: Oh yeah, and this is so totally a day-one purchase for me. |

I'm actually glad they're including both (all 3, technically unless they add other languages). I don't think the Streamline dub is as good as the Pioneer one (from what I saw) even though it has some talented voice actors in it, but I'm still glad it exists again (legally). I think the older Australian release DID include both dubs, I think I read that somewhere.

Why would anyone want the old, outdated "Streamline dub?" Seriously, that dub is horrible. The script is poor, the voice acting is atrocious and they don't even attempt to match the movements, which the latter is enough to deduct points from the dub on its own, since Akira is the first pre-lay anime and one of 2, 2D anime to be classed as pre-lay, meaning mouth movements are 100% to the original Japanese version. While the Pioneer-Animaze dub is not perfect, it is an excellent dub, with great voice acting, especially from Jamieson Price, Joshua Seth, JYB and Matt Mercer, a much better attempt to match the mouth movements and a very tight, accurate script reflecting the Japanese original. Is it better than the Japanese? No, it's not as endearing or as impact as the Japanese version, but it's close and is infinitely superior to the "Streamline dub", which wasn't even produced by Streamline, for the US, but rather Kodansha, for Hong Kong markets, which is enough to examine the old dub's merits. I.E none. If you like TMNT, you may get a little laugh at the reference, but if you want to watch this movie in English, watch the Pioneer/Animaze dub. No, it's not as strong as other Animaze dubs like Cowboy Bebop/Cowboy Bebop Knocking on Heaven's Door, Big O/Big O II or even 8th MS Team or the Japanese original, but still. Anyway, to bypass any of these dub debates, just go for the original JP version. The version with the least flaws/controversy.(though there are flaws)

^ I agree that the 80s dub sucks. I'm usually pretty easy-going when it comes to English anime dubs, but not even I could stomach that piece of dubbing garbage. The voice acting sucked, the script was confusing, and the poor lip-matching was distracting. Also, it sounded like the actors recorded their voices into tin cans.
It's an alright extra for historical value, but other than that, it's not worth watching at all. BTW, it wasn't created by Streamline Pictures. They only distributed. It was actually created by Kodansha for screenings in the Hong Kong market. It was recorded at InterSound though, with the same voice pool that Streamline used at the time (meaning you hear Barbara Goodson as almost every female/little boy). |

I think the reason why people want the Streamline dub is pretty simple: It was the first version of the film most English-speaking audiences saw, and as such, it's a valuable collector's item, as the last time that dub saw an NTSC release was on the 1994 VHS from Orion Home Video, and those tapes are infamous for being of a rather low quality and being very quick to degrade; my Fist of the North Star and Robotech II tapes are heavily deteriorated, and I don't even think they saw much playback. No, it hasn't held up well, but there are a lot of people who enjoy it for sheer nostalgia factor, and for them, that's enough of a purchase point.

I don't think it has much to do with it being a "collector's item" and much more to do with being blinded by that nostalgia and the fact that it was the first version they saw. I mean...when you have people violently raging at the fact that the Pioneer dub even simply exists, its gone past a simple collector's item. |

I've never seen the original dub, and I'm going in fully expecting it not to be as good as the later dub (which I have seen), but I'm glad it's being included so I can see it for myself. I mean, it exists, may as well throw it on there for completion's sake and all. Same as that Lupin the 3rd: Mysery of Mamo re-release from Discotek and it's multitude of dubs of that film.
