I think the joke would have worked better if she got a pack of peanuts.

Sorry Nina, if you want a bigger paycheck, better start improving those voice acting skills.

I think part of the joke is that anime VO doesn't actually pay very well (and there are no residuals). It doesn't pay as well as video games, which itself doesn't pay as well as prelay (for American cartoons).

I don't know how well doing anime as a seiyuu in Japan pays, but I've seen articles here about how a large chunk of seiyuu have other jobs. Dunno if there's residuals there either.

I do think the directional advice in this comic seems pretty accurate. I'm still intrigued that Nina wanted to become a voice actor, I assumed she didn't find them interesting (based on earlier comics).

From the Trident commercials:

No one ever pays me in gum. Crying or Very sad

Rather than other jobs or residuals but other sources of income like CDs, promo appearances, image publications, etc. That's why many sing the OP and ED songs - it's another source of money from the same gig.

Even Video Game actors get paid terrible. I heard the other day the lady that plays femshep in the Mass Effect series only got paid like 1,200 dollars for the first one, and that game sold millions. That's the problem with working on commission.

It's common for writers who send submissions to magazines to get paid in copies of the magazine. Writers probably get paid worse than VAs.

Heh, when the director was asking Nina to sound more feminine and "weirder" I thought she was being tricked into voicing some hentai...

Poor Nina. That looked more like an audition to me than the real thing.

That's what I was kind of wondering too. All the things she was asked to do just seemed too weird.

Maybe the next strip will be Nina watching the show she's in, and shocked when she finds out its hentai Anime hyper

That would be a great punchline. Except it shouldn't happen in the next strip, as that would be too obvious. No, better that Robyn waits a few months and then springs it on us, as it would be all the more surprising and funnier.

That strip was hilarious! Reminded me of some of the sessions VA's have described they experienced in the booth during Q&A panels.
