I've always liked soundtracks, and anime soundtracks are no exception. A while ago I hunted some down on Amazon and added them to my wishlist. But the problem is that many of them are [IMPORT], as most of you know, and they cost 3x as much as ordinary CDs. That's really hard to justify for a soundtrack purchase.

Yesterday a weird notion came into my head. We've all seen the J-List ads, where, among other things, you can buy Japan's iTunes Music Store Cards (so you can buy their music from another country).

So what if I bought one and used it to get the OSTs over iTunes? That would have to be cheaper, right?

Of course, first I headed over to iTunes Japan to see if they had the OSTs in the store, but unless I'm mistaken, they don't have the selection I thought they would.

Now, I can't read Japanese, and even if I could, iTunes isn't displaying kanji (it's giving me those block characters). So some of it I can't read. Is anyone able to tell me, do they have either the OSTs for The Big O or Trigun? The anime selection is pretty small....

Yah... I heard about Japanese Itunes and was super excited. Until I found out you have to live in Japan to sign up, so unless you live in Japan you're out of luck.

That's why you buy these:

iTunes will then let you sign up for Japan's store.

P.S.: Not that I'm promoting J-Box, just that I don't know who else sells them!

thier shipping is a little on the slow side, but they're prices are pretty good.

I've ordered stuff from them several times and I've never had a problem.

You can also try YesAsia and Amazon Japan. Very Happy I've order from both and they alway have great service. YesAsia even has free shipping over $40.00 (and their website has an English language option). Amazon Japan doesn't have free shipping (for international purchases at least), but it's great for hard to find stuff.

Just a note on those two sites: although Amazon.co.jp charges for shipping, they sell everything in yen, so you get a fair exchange rate, while YesAsia applies one hell of a price markup for each product, effectively canceling out the effect of free shipping.

So, it all evens out, and Amazon.co.jp tends to come out cheaper after the math. Also, their international shipping usually comes in faster than estimated. The only drawback is you have to be slightly Japanese-capable to search for things. (I can only read hiragana and katakana and about 10 kanji but I can poke my way around on the site.)

Well, if people are going to say their favorite OST online store, I guess I'll go ahead and recommend Play-Asia. They have everything (except for manga, which pisses me off)! They even sell candy and ramen that's sold in Japan. I highly recommend it. They have the anime soundtracks & drama cds page here, so be sure to check it out. I hope I could've been of some help, as well!

Well, this may be an unintelligent question, but the name of the topic is Importing OSTs from Japan and this does apply to that. Do imported Japanese CD's work on American CD players(like the CD players you walk into any old Best Buy and buy).

Yep, no problems there.

Oh as a side note, I use a Rio mp3 player and it displays Japanese characters for wma files just fine, unfortunately it doesn't play wma files very well - pfft!
