I do not mind anime flashbacks as long as they are like FMA eps. 3 Mother. I just hate when anime flashbacks interupt fights in anime. They just take too long and interupt the flow of the fight. Matter of fact that is my major problem with Naruto because it like they have a anime flashback every fight. It better to have a eps desinated for an anime flashback.

Well they exist for a reason. They help you know more about the characters, often help you understand their feelings instead alot of BANG POW ZOOM. Also keep you reading and on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens in the fight. While not my favorite plot device, they are quite necessary, so learn to live with em!

I completely agree with Bennyb flashbacks are neccessary for setting mood, but I believe that if you do it too much, it makes flashback less effective. I thought a good flashback in Naruto would be spoiler[during Choji's battle with Jiroubou. Without the flashback you wouldn't get to see Choji's past and how at the end Choji was still happy even though he was going to die because he had friends. That part I believe couldn't have been done effectively without flashback.]

They used to do complete episodes recapping the anime series thus far. The goal was to play the flashback/summary episode in hopes of connecting to new fans..... and they were so boring! Can you imagine the horror of spending $35 on a VHS and the two episodes being nothing but recap episodes? Thankfully, they don't do that anymore.

However, Inuyasha receives my vote for replaying the same scenes as flashbacks more than any other series. Whoa! It's amazing how many times they replayed the opening scenes and the scenes of Inuyasha stealing the Jewel.

Flashbacks are extremely useful and a lot of fun to watch when the flashbacks are something that is new to the show. Many flashbacks in between fights fit that category, for most of the time it is a perfect time for the fighters to have self-realization and become strong by remembering their cause. Also, these flashbacks are used to "drag" a fight. Like in Bleach, while a fight may only be a few minutes of substance, the flashbacks and other things involved can drag it into a whole episode, all done without being boring. However, if you want smooth hardcore fights, these flashbacks do get in the way.

The recap episodes during a series is a different type of flashback. I'm sure that everybody hates recaps, since it's nothing more than a waste of an episode. There are also often times when a scene gets replayed over and over again, like Inuyasha, which is also more or less a waste of time IMO.

Wolf's Rain had a whopping 4 100% flashback episodes right smack in the middle of the series. Talk about a worthless DVD volume.

I think if a studio is running out of material or are having other problems which don't allow them to animate a proper episode they should at least spice up the flashbacks with some revelations or diffrent points of view or do a la Excel saga and re-edit the whole thing for awsomeness.

Wasn't that because the studio had to be shut down because of some sort of viral outbreak (I believe Sars.)

That said flashback can be a little bit of a bother, however flashback can be so powerful if they bring out new information. Or if the flashback shows us how a character has changed or what happened to someone they knew....it's all about direction, one studio can make a flashback really amazing, or just a waste of time.
Till next time,

BTW I just hit a thousand post scary how much time I have spent on this site.....I am going to go for a swim.

Actually, I liked the flashbacks in Naruto--they kept things from being fight, fight, fight all the time, and contained some good character drama. Especially the Sakura/Ino scenes in the 40s, the Lee flashbacks in the 50s, and the Gaara flashbacks in the 70s.

I enjoy 'new' flashbacks. What I find annoying are the multiple flashbacks to events earlier in the series, especially when there is more of that than new material. You know in Wolf's Rain, nothing else happened, and you could just skip the episodes. But, imagine if they stuck five minutes of new material in those episodes randomly. Of course, the title of the series that killed me about this has totally left my mind. Maybe Yu-Gi-Oh!

Some flashbacks are the entire point of the story such as the flashbacks in Tenjho Tenge. If you didn't have the flashbacks in that story you wouldn't really understand the conflict between Maya and Mitsuomi.

But, yeah, when half or more of the episode is flashbacks from previous episodes and don't really add anything new to the story, that can tick a person off some.

I like the Tenjho Tenge flashbacks, and those things last half the series. Laughing

Ah well, it's not what you guys are talking about; carry on!

As of the Naruto flashbacks, it really depends on how well it is done. Those "omg I was a wimp and now I'm strong!" are terribly frustrating that I'm not watching Naruto now, and that's just the CN ones shown, since I'm not downloading any Naruto online. That and the fact that, eventually, even they become as repetitive as the anime itself. How many ninja kids in that world had traumatic pasts of some kind, anyway?

The Inuyasha flashbacks, on the other hand...

"KIKYOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!"

Oh God! There are times where I just want to smack the writers on that series. Has anyone counted the times they showed the scenes where Kikyo shoots Inu Yasha or him sitting next to her glaring. Not to mention they did 2 episodes (aired not too long ago on Cartoon Network) using all those scenes featuring Inu Yasha and Kikyo that we've already seen MANY times before.

I also liked the Tenjho Tenge flashbacks, but I thought they were a little too long. Like come on, as interesting as their past was, I did want to see the main cast fight more often.

If it's a flashback that was previously unseen before, then they're perfectly fine for me. If It's simply a scene from an earlier ep, it doesn't matter too much as long as they don't replay it too much, like Inu Yasha. -_-

What's wrong with a single flashback from an anime? That's what anime shows need to tell the story of a cahracter's past. Like Naruto's for example. spoiler[Nobody cared for Naruto at all when he was a child and he had no parents. But only Iruka liked him.]

There's nothing wrong with a single flashback, it's when it's repeated over and over again that gets on my nerves.

And what I think is bothering other people is that they are really getting into the fight between two characters **whap, BAM! ooh, hit 'em again! OUCH! Going face first into that brick wall HAD to have HURT!** Then BOOM!! the fight is interrupted with a flashback as to why one character hated his father or whatever.
