I'm new to Anime. A good friend told me that I should start by watching Samurai Champloo. I haven't bought the DvD yet and I would like to know what is the difference between the 3 pcs set and the seven pcs boxed set, they both have all 26 episodes. I also would like to ask if this is the best series for a beginner like me. Thanks in advance guys.

The 3 pcs set is a bootleg. The picture will be "cloudy" and the sound will be "shaky". If you have any respect for anime and the hard work that goes into making it, you would not buy the 3 pcs set. You would be giving your hard earned money to criminals, and getting a shitty product in return.
Try here. If your not sure about it you can pick up invidual volumes to see if you like it. Also it is pretty popular, try renting it to also see if you like it. |

Hi jime7372. The 3 vol. set is almost definitely a bootleg. If the DVD count sounds too low to be legal, then it probably is.
As for what to start with, asking what anime to start with is sort of like asking what movie or television series to watch. There are all different kinds of anime. Telling us what some of your favorite types of movies or tv series are might help. Or go into the anime section of the encyclopedia and see what most people here like in the top 50 bayesian list. |

Yea, I agree with your friend. Samurai Champloo was one of my first animes I had seen, and it really made me look forward to more.
If you want the best series, then I would have to tell you to watch Fullmetal Alchemist, and remember you could check out more animes to watch by going here. |

Well I would have to say, this isn't a bad starting anime. It's quite a mix of different things and doesn't force you to remember everything that's happening for 26 episodes. The entire show is pretty episodic(each episode is a story in itself besides a couple 2-4 episode long arcs) which might be an easier start.
And I don't need to really say it again but, yeah, don't bother with a 3disc set of any 26 episode anime. Unless the company puts out a dual sided discs...you'll just be getting a most likely crap quality bootleg. |

Yeah, I'd say go with the 7-disc set. The 3 disc-set has to be a bootleg, unless, unbeknownst to me, they recently re-released the DVDs on three discs, like they did with S-Cry-Ed. But I highly doubt that they did that. Anyway, Samurai Champloo is a great show, so I think you should watch it. It's funny, action-packed, educational (well, kind of...LOL!). It's a very interesting and entertaining show.

Oh yeah, 3 disc smells of bootleg. The way id verify whether the discs are genuine is going to amazon.com where they have the listing of editions that they have out. You wanna double check and make sure they have the manufacturing info and ect on it the product.
Cause if im correct i believe Escaflowne has a 3 disc edition of the series now so some might be genuine.... As far as the anime watching goes FullMetal Alchemist is great and so is Samurai Champloo. Both offer a great variety of styles of anime production and those are 2 out of the 3 animes i personally started watchin when i got back into anime after a longtime. Also, i'd check out Trigun if i were you. It's emotional, intense, but also sooo funny and easy to like. Catch the 2 episodes airing on AS this Saturday along with FullMetal & Samurai Champloo. |

If you're looking for great anime, there's another simple way of doing it that looks beyond individual recomendations. Just go look at the top 10 or 50 animes out there and start clicking down the list reading the descriptions until you find one that sounds interesting. Anything on that list should be well worth your time, and it's my current project to see everything on that list.

I never saw Space Adventure Cobra, but if you say that the hero was a badass you'll probably like Mugen in Samurai Champloo. And you say that you liked complex characters with a past so this series is probably right up your alley, both Jin and Mugen have somewhat shaky pasts. And this series has plenty of action, a little unorthodox but I think it is fun to watch. I don't want to hype up the story too much but I think you'll be happy with the purchase.
For more action/adventure that have characters with a past, other shows you might like are Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. You have to be a bit patient for Trigun if you don't like silly comedy. But if you like that or you can get past it, you can enjoy the story as it starts to develop and Vash's, the main character's, past starts to unravel; it gets very interesting. Cowboy Bebop is just an interesting series completely. You have space, bounty hunters, dog fights in spaceships, gunfights, Bruce Lee style martial arts, and a lot more. Also almost every character from the main characters to the mascot has a past with some level of complexity. All three of these shows are among my favorites and I enjoy re-watching them whenever I get a chance. However if you are new to anime you might want to also check out some different genres so you can start to develop a feel for what you really like and don't like, it'll make it easier for you to know what other series to look into and which ones to stay away from. It sounds like Cowboy Bebop might be a good place to start for you. It's alot of action fan's favorite (not mine personally, but that has to do more with my personal preferences than the quality of the series), and you would probably like Spike. It doesn't have all that much continuity - in fact, about 75% of the episodes are stand alone - but there is a main storyline that turns up again over the course of the series and becomes very important as the series nears it's end. At any rate, it's a series most anime fans get around to fairly early on.
Heroes-with-attitudes aren't a personal favorite of mine, so someone will probably come along with your tastes who can suggest more. Good luck.

Ooh, I forgot to mention Rurouni Kenshin. Action is not my genre either but Kenshin is another great action/adventure show, and one of the most important aspects about Kenshin is his legendary bloodshed past and how he is trying to escape and repent for it. This series is a lot longer than the others though so you may first want to check out a single volume or two to see if you like it, but then again you should probably do that with any suggestion.

I highly recommend this one. It is one of my all time favorites. It has lots of action. I think the best action scenes are the ones when Mugen and Jin are fighting each other like in the first episode when they first meet each other. I think there is quite a bit of humor as well. I can't remember the name of the episode, but the one where they all decide to play baseball is a hoot.
