I have also seen a few definitions for emo but I can't say that I really understand what it means.

I know this doesn't really fit, but what about Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien? There is no self mutilation, but if I remember correctly there are a few moments of self loathing and quite a few scenes of self-deprecating behavior. It is a bit of a soap opera-ish roller coaster ride, if that makes any sense, but it's also one of my favorite anime and one of the very few primarily dramatic series I like.

I don't know, I can't think of any others that even remotely resemble any of the interpretations of emo that I've heard.

The way I think of emo, is its kind of like the new goth. But a bit less edgy. And with more crying. I think people much above the age of 20 don't come across many emo kids. Emo is meant to mean bands like Lostprophets and stuff like that, its like nu-metal with emotional lyrics. (Hence the emo name.) What I also think is great is some of the sub-genres from emo, like screamo. Can't wait to hear some of that. Wink

You couldn't be more wrong. The stuff that the mass media has latched onto as emo in this decade, starting with bands like Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World, really aren't emo. Emo came out of the D.C. hardcore scene in the mid/late 1980s with bands like Rites Of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, and Hoover and really bears no resemblance to the current popular use of the term. Purists don't really even consider the mid-90s "midwest emo" bands to be emo because they didn't descend from the D.C. sound. Sunny Day Real Estate were probably the most important and definitive of the mid-90s bands, joined by bands like Mineral, Christie Front Drive, Braid, and Texas Is The Reason. Wikipedia has a fairly decent article, but I think there's better information at fourfa.com.

All of the stereotypes about wrist slitting or whatever really aren't true at all and I have no idea where it came from. Maybe My Chemical Romance? I really don't know since I prefer to avoid listening to them.

Fair enough. Yeh, I'm sure that there is a 'real' definition of what emo 'should' mean, but I think my definition relates fairly well to the general 'misconception' of emo.

I have no idea where it came from either. I can remember a few years ago, emo kids "sat around in dark rooms crying, wearing sweaters, and writing poetry for their LiveJournal."

As a fan of emo music (as stated by one3rd and fourfa), I really do dislike this new attachment of retardation.

And screamo is the most retarded name for a musical genre I've ever heard. I don't know why we think wussy pop-punk bands with cute, ill-placed screaming need their own sub-genre.

OH if anyone knows anything about emo its me haha. i live in delaware and there is a huge "emo scene". They all gather at this hall and listen to a bunch of emo bands, and the boys wear girl pants, and eyeshadow and the girls shop at thrift strores and try so hard to be original haha. theyre all in their own little world. But from what i know to be emo around my way, i cant really label any anime that i know of as emo, because if i could.. i wouldnt watch it haha

Now I think Goth has at least three meanings.. iirc it has meant a Germanic tribe, a derogatory term for a form of architecture (gothic), an offshoot of the punk movement, a load of angsy teenagers wearing black makeup...

Has anyone seen School Days? The encyclopedia doesn't really have any information on this anime other than that it's a a half-hour long ONA, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it.

Um, this might sound stupid, but: what's an ONA? I know what an OVA is, but I've never heard of an ONA. What is it?

I don't think so, since the only blatant reference to self-hurt (and The Matrix) I could find in the lyrics to their songs is in Headfirst for Halos. I think the creation of that stereotype is more likely on the shoulders of Hawthorne Heights, since I've heard more than one of their songs on the radio has the lyrics "I cut myself" in it.

[Edit] Just thought, that youtube video I linked might be against the rules, I only thought about it due to the one WolverinePrincess posted earlier... Apologies if it is.

The one I linked to was the actual music video for that song, not an AMV. I think Gonzo animated it, but I'm not sure.

ONA stands for Original 'Net Animation, and it refers to anime that premiere on the internet (does not include fan videos or flash animations). They're pretty rare in comparison to OVAs and TV anime. In fact, the only other one I've seen is Magical Play.

There's also Azumanga Web Daioh, which is an ONA.

Actually, it's not MCR (they're not that emo of a band). I consulted an emo friend of mine on this topic. It's more along the lines of bands like Senses Fail, The Cut Scene (kinda' ironic, eh? I laughed at my friend when she said she liked them), Saves the Day, Hawthorne Heights, A Thorn for Every Heart, The Early November, From First to Last, Postal Service, and Fall Out Boy (some consider them emo, some don't. Mainly just considered emo because you can't understand a word they say).

Some of those bands are lesser known emo bands (ie: Saves the Day), but they defintely are bands that the "emo" of today listen to and make them want to cut themselves.

Oh, thanks, Wolverine Princess. Wait, so does that mean they're available only over the internet? They don't have them on DVD? Or do they?

Most of your questions should be explained here. Hope that helps.
