Given the fact that Vandread's Jura Elden is a fat, egotistical, selfish stuck up, manipulating bimbo, I can't help but wonder if Vandread would be a LOT better if her character never existed @ all. I mean, Jura didn't really want a baby. She just wanted to be the first to get pregnant by a man, without really having any idea what it all entailed, because she's a shallow attention seeker. And that she wanted to combine with the H-man's Van just to see if her Vandread would be fancy looking. For that matter, why didn't Barnette draw the line on the J-gal's antics, or better still, drop her like a hot potatoe? So if there was no Jura @ all, there'd be one less headache for Hibiki, and he'd have only Dita and Misty to deal with. What do you all think?

sorry, but I felt that Jura actually added quite a lot to that series. Yes she was egotistical and pretty stuck up, but she came through time and time again. For instance, the episode where spoiler[Meia accidently got jetissoned with Kalua(sp)(the baby), Jura took command of the dread team and led them through the battle. ] And on a non-combat instance, spoiler[Jura was the one who took it upon herself to trap both Dita and Hibiki in a room, forcing them to finally come out and say what they needed to say to each other and put an end to their ridiculous antics, eventhough they were interupted.] Jura's main flaw was that she was overly romantic and full of herself. I've met people like that in real life and did not really enjoy their company, so as a person, yeah, I would probably dislike her; as a character in Vandread, however, no, she was definitely needed and I felt she was excellently portrayed.

Plllll....If I was Hibiki, I'd junction my van with Meia (number one!!)or Dita (number two!!)------but NOT Jura. All she wants is a romance.

No, all she wants is to be loved for who she is. And she doesn't quite see that she is loved for who she is. Barnette and the others just need to whack her on the head a few times until she does understand that.

The one thing I think one may be able to admire about Jura, is her ability that her mouth never wrote a check her @ss couldn't cash. Kind of like Babe Ruth in a way, "If I done it, it ain't braggin'." That or Elizabeth taylor, who's probably still in the tabloid press fairly often.

I am curious, what sort of personality would you replace her with? You will still need another fighter to round out the complete list of variations the vandread can become, right? I mean all anime have to have more and more characters added, don't they?
If you remove the capable but self-aggrandizing personality, and you have the ditzy yet always trying their best person, and the other person who will always try to shoulder all the responsibility in the world, and become some kind of martyr, what are you going to do now? How will you have conflict and resolution to the interpersonal contacts?

I honestly couldn't tell you what kind of person I would have. Mostly because I don't know what would sell in Japan. I would think that a person who makes noise, would be of more interest than a quiet but successful person would be more of a viable choice in making an anime series. You could get a hothead, who is going to set the world on fire with her talent, and be better than everyone else. But that would be too similar to Meia's character wouldn't it?

Sort of reminds me of a parody of Kiss' A World Without Heroes:

A world without Jura
is like a world without sun
you can't look up to anyone
without Jura

And a world without Jura
is like a never ending race
is like a time without a place
a pointless thing devoid of grace

Where you don't know what you're after
or if something's after you
and you don't know why you don't know
in a world without Jura

In a world without dreams
things are no more than they seem
and a world without Jura
is like a bird without wings
or a bell that never rings
just a sad and useless thing

Where you don't know what you're after
or if something's after you
and you don't know why you don't know

In a world without Jura
there's nothing to be;
it's no place for me

Vandread is one of those generic animes that has all the basic personalities for characters. I dont think removing any of the charaters would have been any good. It's a formula proven to work.

However, having only seen season one, I cannot talk about the chars in their entirity. So I wont go into detail that will be incomplete.

I was annoyed more at Hibiki more than anyone else. Maybe they should get rid of him? He's loud, he's obnoxious, he's arrogant, he's stupid, but Vandread wasn't all that great to begin with, except the twist about the spoiler[captain being a man]

hahaha, well said jaybug39. Juras world is one that revolves around sex appeal, its sad really Rolling Eyes but she does add somewhat of a comic relief, after all she's the most willing women on the ship. Razz

The only comic relief is that rotten egg Pyaro--now HE needs to be scrapped!!
