In recent years,there have been a lot of web manga that have appeared on computer screens everywhere and many of them have yet to show up in print. One of them have recently been translated into English and I hope does show up in print. It's called "Marine Corps Yumi" and so far I like what I see.
It's about a young Japanese schoolgirl named Yumi who,if we can be honest,isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Her dream is to President of the country of "Amerigo" even though if the constitution of the fictional version of America is anything like ours,she can't really become president. She'd have to be a natural born citizen,which she isn't. Also,even if Yumi became a U.S. citizen,she still can't be president,because she's not a native-born American. But,armed with enthusiasm and a lack of common sense,she goes to Amerigo in search of her dreams. So far,from what I see,the Americans in this manga are portrayed positively,including the American war veterans. A number of Japanese manga haven't exactly portrayed Americans very well. But,there are also manga that have portrayed Americans positively and this is one of them. I congratulate those who have at least made an attempt to treat Americans as,at least,decent people. And the translation of the manga is pretty well done. If any digital manga deserves the print treatment,it's "Marine Corps Yumi." Yes,the heroine doesn't seem to have a lot upstairs,but she's also a really fun protagonist who you just can't help but like. I look forward to the rest of this manga. I hope the rest of this is as entertaining as the other chapters I've seen translated into English. I hope "Marine Corps Yumi" does well. That first page is "temporarily unavailable." I will try it again later. The second link works. The way that the JavaScript is used makes it difficult for me to navigate through the pages, but I can read it OK. And thank you, Snomaster1, for mentioning this. When I saw "digital manga" I was thinking of something like an e-book, but I guess that this is a web comic isn't it. That is a format that I have not really tried before, but it does deserve some attention. I have read several printed volumes of an American web comic called "Girl Genius" and I like it a lot. It definitely has a manga "feel" to it for me. Now I need to learn to tell the difference between a legitimately translated web manga and a scanlation. |

I have read the first four issues of "Marine Corps Yumi" and I am really enjoying it. Yumi is definitely my kind of character and I like her a lot. I am not so sure that the portrayal of Americans is quite as positive as Snomaster1 thinks. Yumi does have a positive opinion of Americans, but Yumi is, well, an idiot. And I am not sure that her new American friend Linda is really much smarter. It seemed to me that those war vets were making fun of Yumi, and not necessarily in a friendly way. But I could be wrong. I am going to keep reading and see how it plays out. So far it is a fun experience, and I would also be interested in seeing it in print. |

I had not noticed that. It is an interesting thread, and article. It seems that "Marine Corps Yumi" is intended to have a more positive view of Americans than I thought. What I have read is only a small part of the beginning of the manga, and I am definitely enjoying it. And I said, I do plan to keep reading. The only real problem that I see right now is that four pages per week might be enough to hold my interest. I might just forget about it. But even if I do I will remember eventually, and I will probably enjoy it more if there is a lot more of it translated when I get back to it. Actually, I might intentionally wait for a few months before I read more. |

hyojodoji is right when he said that there was already an article about "Marine Corp Yumi" on ANN. The reason I did this thread was to make the most amount of people aware of this manga as humanly possible. It's a really good manga. It deserves all the publicity it can get.
And Touma,I also read the manga myself,and I didn't think that the war veterans were making fun of her. From what I saw,they were eager to have someone listen to their stories,even if it was a foreigner. I didn't see any sort of meanness among them at all. I could be wrong but that's what I saw. And there's something that I'd like to say. The lead character Yumi,may not be the brightest bulb on the tree,but she's such a fun character that you can't help but like her. She's also wearing her school uniform when she was visiting the U.S. I'd love to see a manga or anime in which a Japanese schoolgirl wandering around the United States in a sailor fuku. I'd love to see that,the contrast between that and American high school students who,on the whole,don't wear school uniforms. I'd love to see that. |
