Well, I was just takin a little friendly poll here and checking what everyone thought was the most overhyped anime that they've ever seen.
I know what I'm about to say many of you will think is blasphemy and try to kill me, but everyone is entitled to their opinion
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yea. I said it. Series started out good enough, had a few good moments here and there, but I dont think its the "most controversial anime ever created" nor do I think it's the "best anime ever created." Not to mention it had two of THE most annoying characters EVER in anim anime
1) Ikari Shinji
2) Asuka
These two characters aggrivated the living *#&$ out of me. And the fact the the series leaves you so hanging, even after seeing both the "movies" (which didn't clear up anything really) To the point where you have to go look up on the net what a series means, as well as symbolisms, etc. etc. I have no problem with symbolism, but when the whole show is based on that just to confuse the viewer, sorry I'm not feelin it
From what I've seen so far my personal "best of all time" is Berserk.
I'm not trying to start a flame war, just asking what everyone thinks, if their is a disagreement, let us talk about it in a civilized manner, I dont want this topic to get shot down by admin for fighting.
Well, I'm interested in hearing what everyone else has to say.

Hmm...what do you mean "left you hanging?" And how exactly is the "entire show" based on symbolism? I don't mean to sound snobbish here, but I thought it all made sense...maybe I or somebody else here could clear it up for you?

At last! Someone else said it. Not the dissing EVA, that's fairly common, but the annoyance factor of Ikari Shinji. By the end of episode 26 I wanted to reach my hands through my screen and b***hslap Shinji a few times. I don't know how that would have messed up the plotline, but I would have felt better.

Ummm..
I hate to say it, but Shinji is supposed to be that annoying. It's quite intergral to the story symbolism.

Yes, he was supposed to be annoying but he just got on everybody's nerves. I mean, suppose your stuck in the middle of a war and soldiers are running short and u are the last line of defense, your not going to sit there and just say I don't want to or just stand there crying about it while your family and friends are fighting for their lives. No, you get your ASS up and take arms!!
I know that was a bad anology but,I mean c'mon. If your the only person who can save countless lives or even the world. What will you do? Sit there and cry about it?
As for my most overrated anime it has to go for :TRIGUN
Absolutely the most overrated by far.
This guy contradicts himself, how he doesn't want to kill, but packs a foot long gun. I get the premise I guess, but then this guys acts like he's stupid but is actually smart. It reminds me of Irresponsible Captain Tylor. So in this case the trigun makers sorta copied them in terms of the characteristics. But you know what really ticks me off? When people say Trigun was and is better than COWBOY BEBOP. That really gets me riled up. Wantanbe spent years creating a good anime series. And I think he doesn't get enough respect among other creators or directors.
Trigun : Average anime
Cowboy Bebop: Trancends anime.

My vote goes to Bebop. Don't get me wrong here, because I really like the show. But, it seems every where you go people are like "Bebop is the greatest thing EVER!!!!" "Bebop rules! All other anime sucks!!" Come on people. If that's not overhyping a show, I don't know what is. Bebop is good, innovative, and fun to watch. But, it's severely overrated.
My second vote would go to Trigun (which I also like), for the same reasons.

I'm not saying that Cowboy Bebop is better than anything,I think the best anime are the Miyazaki films. But we are taking about the most overrated anime "SERIES". And I think cowboy bebop deserves the hype because ,c'mon have u seen anything better in terms of story and anime quality in an anime "series"? well.....

As per recommendation of a friend, I have started watching the series "Saishuu Heiki Kanojo." I would have to say story-wise it's deeper and more involved than Bebop. More...personal? Aghh..it's hard to explain because it's like Bebop and SHK are on two different levels and it's hard to compare.
NGE also gets my vote. Though somewhat confusing at times, it has a good storyline.
There are many series out there that have good stories and are well animated, but also have a lot of fluff in them too...Kenshin, for example. So, I will give Bebop credit for having very, very limited fluff. Lots of hype, little fluff. Quite refreshing.
But, yes, there is your answer.
I would also like to add DBZ to my list of overhyped anime. Everyone talks about it, you see it everywhere, and then you go and watch it and you're like "umm...nothing's happening..." You watch it 2 weeks later and the story has progressed...zero. Why is it so popular?! Oh yeah, that has already been discussed at length.

"DBZ IS AN OVERRATED ANIME. IT IS POPULAR AND IS EVERYWHERE."
Ah, the naivete of youth. As teenagers, you have yet to discern the actual difference between popularity and quality.
You must soon learn to seperate the two factors, wherein you both see why something is of poor quality, yet also see why it is nevertheless extremely popular.
DBZ is watched by millions because it is violent, simple, and aggressively marketed. DBZ is not quality because it is poorly-written and downright moronic. These are two independant qualities; neither one is a factor of the other.
I hate maid shows, but I can see why they are popular. I don't like baseball, but I understand why it's popular. I love ice cream. I wish I had some right now, because ice cream is good.
In summation, I had no idea where I was going with any of this.

Chobits. don't get me wrong it's not horrible, but i don't under stand why it's so hugely popular as it's really annoying. most of it's like 26 episdes of sappy moments, and fanservice

I think Bebop lives up to the hype. It is so strong in all areas. And it got me interested in music again, which is quite an achievement since I have been bored with music since grunge became popular in the early '90s.
As for DBZ, it can be fun if you are in the mood to make fun of something that is really ridiculous.

I still say "She the Ultimate Weapon" is horrid and kinda ecchi. Those character designs make the main characters look 40 years apart in age, and goes way too much into lolicom for me to take seriously.

Even though Eva wasn't perfect, it's still arguably one of the finest mecha/character-driven animes ever. I do agree with the wimp you call Shinji though, very annoying. And so was the lead in Rahxephon (which is total rip-off of Eva. Even though I still loved it)
Seriously, whatever "rating" it got, it deserved it.
And Cowboy Bebop? It's as original and daring as any other anime, ever. And whatever it experimented with, it worked. It was seriously a perfect anime in my opinion. Might not be my favourite, but I can't find one thing about it I didn't like.
I agree with Trigun. Because everyone kept talking about it, I decided to watch it, and it was okay funny. But aside from the lead character, the character designs was seriously hilarious. in the bad way.
Another overrated anime is Hellsing. Jesus, that was one ugly anime. The colours looked like it came out of the old Vampire Hunter D movie. What the "hell" (pun intended) was with the red sky?

I still have to finish it. It still could spiral into a "why did I watch this" kinda series. But, at this time, I think it has a good story.
AGH!. I am getting severely outvoted in Bebop being overrated. It's a great series. Too much hype. Perhaps it's just because it's always on CN. Trigun and CB, that's all a lot of people ever see. And then that's all they talk about, like they're the only anime out there. Expand your horizons. There's good stuff with less hype out there. But, I guess other than that, I can't find any faults with it CB. So, I will retract my Bebop vote and just stick with Trigun and DBZ.

How can there be any question here, it's DBZ by far! Most of the show's filled with a buncha guys gruntin like they're constipated. I can't believe people think that show is watchable.....
Trigun.... I kinda agree with. The hype it got before it came to A/S didn't quite match what it was to me but I still think it was a lot closer to the hype..... then DBZ....... did that make sense? I hope so.
Bebop, no way. Love that show.... same with EVA. If you could not connect with Shinji in some way, shape, or form you are a hollow, emotionless..... bad person!
Now that I think about it, Gundam Wing's kinda overrated too. I mean it was all right, but the way some people go on about it..... ticks me off. Go Mobile Suit!
