Wow, you did not enjoy this
I'm not a huge fan of toilet humor myself, but I still enjoyed Panty and Stocking. I even watched the series twice (one with subs and one with the dub) so I guess I MUST like it! The first episode totally turned me off with all that was going on, but a friend convinced me to keep watching. |

I find this review entirely valid. I love that this show dared to be different, but an appreciation of that by no means has to lead to an embracing of the all the lowbrow humor that is in it. This anime is divisive and extremely offensive by design, the epitome of something that's unique but most definitely not for everyone.

Got to agree with Kimlinger on this one I think I might have enjoyed like one episode of this show. The rest just seemed to be "poop is funny right? Diarrhea!" With as much talent as this show had its shouldnt just be just saying "look at the pretty visuals".
Instead of trying to ape Drawn Together they should have stolen more than just Gir's design from Invader Zim. |

Nice seeing such an unforgiving review. This series makes Family Guy seems funny and classy.

Shows like this get a dub, but Garden of Sinners does not....

I appreciate that they chose an art style not often seen in anime, but that alone doesn't give it right of passage to an "A" rating. Sure, there were a lot of ridiculous moments, but overall, it was just okay. And the fact that you gave Clannad a lower score for art than this...how are you scoring these? I guess if you're just like "compared to the story, P&S's art is a masterpiece", then I guess I can't argue with you there; but if it's basically supposed to be what you consider an objective score, then that just confuses me. |

Eh, haters gonna hate. I thought the show had some hilarious episodes, especially when Scanty & Kneesocks show up. I can understand how it wouldn't be for everyone, though.
I love comments like this. How about actually forming your own opinion? Last edited by v1cious on Wed Apr 24, 2013 2:10 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I loved the show a lot. For me, it had me laughing a whole lot and I for one enjoyed the show but I WILL ADMIT! Its one of those shows that is best watched only in doses. Small ones. It may be too much for some people to handle.
And another thing, whatever you do, DO NOT watch this show if you are expecting the next story telling masterpiece like the next "Citizen Kane" or "Godfather". Just watch it to have fun, thats it, there is no reason for you to expect so much from it. One more thing, if I were any of you guys, I'd ignore Carl Kimlinger's review and check it out for myself. I thought it was fun to watch and some of the people I showed it to liked it while some thought it was too much for them. |

Heh, Garden of Sinners got a dub in Germany. And an affordable Blu-Ray release... Re Panty & Stocking: Never had any interest. The ANN seasonal reviews warned me off. As far as Carl's review goes, I'm actually surprised by the C-/D overall rating. I thought it was going to be lower, given the amount of vitriol... |

Hint: Garterbelt is a Catholic priest. P&S is perhaps the most polarizing anime of the last decade. People who like it tend to REALLY like it. People who hate it tend to REALLY hate it. (and then there are the people who loved it until the twist ending, then REALLY, REALLY hated it after that.) I can see why. Some folks are able to look past the gross-out humor and see the innovative, unique animation, and some can't. Either approach is valid. Though I'm surprised that Karl says nothing about the second segment of episode 5, which completely switches up the art style, features a different protagonist, and delivers one of those most effective condemnations of dehumanizing Japanese business culture I've seen in an anime (not that I've seen many, since anime seems to shy away from serious satire most of the time.) (Of course, that's also the episode with all the vomit in it. Stocking even points out that at this point they've done all the gross bodily fluids possible and hopes they can move on to something else.) I can understand disliking the show, though I wouldn't call it a waste. It does more new and innovative things with its visuals in one ten minute segment than most shows do in their entire runs. The school shootout between P&S and the demon girls, for example, is unlike anything I've seen in an anime before. In an era of cookie-cutter anime with interchangable plots, I'm willing to give a show major points for trying something new, when Gainax could have made easy money by serving up yet another lifeless, cliche-ridden harem or moe series. You may not like P&S, but you have to give it credit for taking chances. |

Well, since one of my friends actually bought the series, I had marathon it with her some time ago (when I wasn't swamped with homework).
Honestly? It's average. I agree that the art, animation, and especially the music deserve high marks. They managed to encapture the "idea" of thick-line animation commonly seen in the 1990's - early 2000's Western Cartoons like Dexter's Lab, Cow & Chicken, Atomic Betty, Johnny Bravo, etc. The use of live action shots and puppetry was also well-done (again, in Dexter's Lab, there was a segment called the Puppet Pals which mocked child friendly shows) The music is so diverse and funky, I would gladly buy the soundtrack (I can't really describe how much I love the ending theme and so much more). Movement is fluid since the characters are, well, cartoony and don't have to worry about being anatomically correct. My problem? It's not that funny. Not just the cussing or vulgar jokes or even the blatant pop culture references. The way the series presents it jokes are so straightforward and in your face that I didn't laugh until like a few more episodes in the series. I prefered how over the top the action scenes were but, that's it. My friend loves it, so she was cracking up while I was stoic during the series. Not a horrible show but, I thought it was average. |

This show is divisive by design. It is brutal, gross, and oftentimes hillarious. The same way not everyone enjoys the anti humor of Adult Swim, this show will not be liked by everyone. But because it is so radically different from Moe trash and standard comedies that it works.

I don't really get the people who are all "OH THIS SHOW IS SO GROSS, WHAT AN INSULT TO MY REFINED TASTES."
I mean, yeah, Panty & Stocking is hit or miss, but it is what it is, which is this wild pastiche festival with an exhilarating visual and musical aesthetic. I actually didn't much like the dub, contrary to my expectations; the Japanese version's comparative deadpan works better with the material than the English script's more liberal use of explicit (i.e. direct) jokes. (Also: they REALLY couldn't have found a real black guy to voice Garterbelt? I mean, REALLY??) |

I agree. I liked the unconventional art style but the animation was really uneven. Sometimes very creative but other episodes looked like they were animated with flash. |
