So does this mean Tom Hanks will be in the remake? But anyway, the manga is as boring at vol. 6 as the Da Vinci movie.

gatsu, you go to hell! you go to hell and you die!
no, seriously though, this is a very good sign as to the popularity of the movie. The real test will be about how GOOD the movie is, i.e. if it CONTINUES to be at the top
This is honestly the first Japanese non-anime movie I've ever anxiously waited for. God I hope it's good, god I hope it's good...

And here I was hoping the DN movie was going to be crap! *L*
Seriously tho, I loathe the manga version of DN with a passion but the movie must be good if it can knock The Da Vinci Code off the Number 1 spot in Japan.

I too hope it's good. I didn't know Death Note when downhill at vol.6, I haven't picked it up yet but I guess I'll see for myself real soon.
I still thought the movie was in production so this news was really surprising.

It probably is, but people want to see it anyway. Like The Break Up.
joel: Actually, I thought it went downhill around vol. 4, but it was just a chore to read in vol. 6. If it doesn't pick up with number 7, I'm considering quitting.

I saw the DN movie this weekened and I thought it was pretty good. One thing to be aware of is that this is the 1st of 2 movies (the second one is being released in November) so this movie ends on a cliff hanger. They changed a few things, but I thought that it helped the overall flow of the movie. Ovbiously nothing can be perfect to the source material, but overall it was a good movie, and a couple of my friends went out and bought the first volume of the manga afterward.
If my memory serves me correctly, this movie ends around volume 3 or 4....it's hard to really tell since they moved a few scenes around.
Ryuk was a little oddly animated at times but overall was bearable and did not ruin the movie. In fact, there were a few good moments for the character (one of them definately NOT being the anime style freak out in the convienence store...bleh).
If you like the manga then I'd recommend this movie. If you haven't read the manga then you should not be lost either.
And comon....it has the actor that plays Chairman Kaga in Iron Chef as the main character's father...that's cool (and well acted if I may add)

I read a really thorough summary of the Death Note movie online. It actually seemed very good. There are some changes from the manga but these changes made the movie all the more interesting. I can't wait to see it.

It only goes up until Volume 4? I thought it was supposed to tell the whole L saga. I seriously doubt they can adapt volume 5-12 in one movie. Could we be seeing Death Note the movie 3 + 4 as well? Or are they not planning on adapting the Near saga. (I am kinda glad its only up to 4, because I didn't want to spoil anything. The Yotsoba group thing is dull anyway..)

They won't; I bet anything it'll be to volume 7/8ish when GASP L DIES

ALSO the manga does NOT go downhill. EVER. Volume 6 is just completely different from what you expected. No need to b#$ch about it. You'll see... oh you'll see.

Eh?
I would love to see this movie, granted I have yet to pick up a volume of Death Note, but it still looks awesome. I love the fact that they used Red Hot Chilli Peppers songs in it.
I'll definately pick it up if a movie company licenses it and brings it to America.

What I expected was action, not some convoluted Rube Goldberg set-up. And then the author just throws it all away anyway and insert some stupid random but predictable situation which was anticipated by the characters, thus defeating any actual tension which previously existed. I keep wondering if Hideo Kojima was a guest writer on this one.

It was made by Warner Brothers, an American movie studio. I'm pretty sure they already have a default license for it in America.
Why so much hate for Death Note, GATSU? I'm with you that it's pretty bad during the whole Yotsuba Corporation arc, and though it picks up after that, it never quite achieves the level of the early volumes. Still, it's enjoyable stuff.
