Is it just me or are these polls getting less innovative? I mean really, if you're not an anime fan then what are you doing on this site? I was tempted just to vote no until I saw some bloke already did it.

This website serves a larger community than just anime fans; professionals, translators, industry people, etc etc etc - they all come here. We're trying to determine what percentage of our readers view themselves as an "anime fan".

The point of the poll will become clear a little later in the week, and you might not find it quite as uninnovative at that time. Or perhaps you still will. -t |

Nope. Not safe to assume. Many people work in industries that don't particularly interest them. If you're a DVD producer, you work for the DVD producing company that offers you a job, be it a cartoon company, a porn company or a mainstream entertainment company. Likewise, if you're a publicist, you work where you get offerred a job. We have voice actors in this industry who are on the record as stating that they never even heard of anime before being cast for a part in some anime. Of all these people who aren't fans when they enter the industry, some obviously become fans to some degree or another. But its naive to assume that everyone becomes a fan. Being a fan is just "icing on the cake." As it happens, a large number of the people working in the industry are fans, but I personally know a good number of people who are not. -t |

Do you even know who Al Kahn is? |

But even if there are some industry workers who don't like anime that come to this site, I imagine they must be a small percentage, and if they really didn't care about anime, would they even bother to participate in an anime-related poll if they were here for business? And Wolverine Princess, I don't consider Al Kahn or 4Kids to be "a part" of the anime industry. To consider them as such would be an insult to real anime companies like ADV or Geneon and I prefer to just pretend that 4Kids and their dubs don't exist. I just think this is kind of a "duh" question to ask, like going to a Clamp site and asking how many people hate Clamp.

Uh, so if you're not a fan, that must mean you hate anime? Some people work with anime for a living but do not identify themselves as "fans". They might like their work, but they don't go to conventions unless they're being paid, they don't buy toys or merchandise, it's just their job. That person is not a fan. They just happen to work in the anime industry. There are many, many people like this. Remember, working in the anime industry is just like any other job. Also, there are people who only casually watch some anime series, like maybe one or two shows on Adult Swim. They watch anime from time to time, but they don't watch it or care about it because it's anime, they watch it because it's a good TV show or whatever. These people are not "anime fans", and probably wouldn't claim to be one if asked. There are many, many people like this. I'm kinda surprised you can't see the grey area here. You're thinking in terms of black and white, and this isn't really a black and white issue. |

Even with all of the info that was provided you still gotta admit that the poll is a little funky. Perhaps its intent was to seperate the "Toonami/CN/AS-only" Anime fans from the Thesekind of people anime fans.

Boy, when I first saw the poll, I thought it was going to be the same kind as the one last month. But I agree, why are you even here if you're not a fan (Already saw the post that answered that question so please don't answer it again)

ANN's next poll: Do you have Internet access?
More seriously, I do think that if you wanted actually useful information options other than "yes" or "no" might've been a good idea. |

I think a more appropriate question would be: "Do you come to the ANN site to learn about anime/manga for personal hobbies?"; or something to that effect. Asking a question so simple may lead a lot of people to reply "no" because they're so annoyed at the seeming stupidity of the question (I'll admit I was tempted myself).

So 64 people, as of this post, are not "Anime Fans". I think this poll will be innaccurate because of the temptation to just select "no". I answered honestly, but I can't speak for everyone.
Are people who watch Live-Action Japanese Films considered "Anime Fans"? That's the only reason I can see for a non-anime fan to be on this site. But then again there are those people who post for RightStuf and other companies who might not even like anime but are here to advertise... This topic is not as stupid as people make it out to be. And just cause you work for a company, doesn't mean you're a fan of it. If I worked for McDonalds, am I automatically a "Hamburger Fan"? |
