Hakkenden: Tōhō Hakken Ibun

# of episodes: 12
Genres: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural

Plot:
Quote:
Five years ago, almost every villager of Ootsuka died due to a tragic plague. But mysteriously enough, three survivors: a girl and two boys, emerged. Now living in a church, the three live in isolation, hidden from those who may seek to find them. Shino, one of the survivors, has control over the power of Murasame, the blade of life. But when the imperial church seeks to take the Murasame for themselves, their peaceful life becomes a thing of the past...

Episode 1
The first episode was okay. I liked the animation as well as the atmosphere of the show so far. It gives off a sort of mystical feeling to it. Of course, there's a little action in this episode involving a rather ugly beast. As for the mystical part, there was a girl dressed in miko outfit who seemed a bit sad based on her expressions in this episode.

Not the best episode for the season but it was an alright watch imo.

Episode 1

Lots of guys, one girl. It's Shoujo!
Which means I'll be watching this one.
The characters looks nice too.
Story itself looks promising as well.
It's nice they're not "only" human.
Maybe, just maybe this will be an action filled shoujo anime.
Let's hope so.

Episode 2
Poor Genpachi-san Sad

But at any rate, mediocre episode that I got a few laughs in with some of the morning scenes and the "spoiler[beast portraits]". Other than that, this series has been meh so far. Hope it can progress forward soon.

spoiler[Hamaji] really is a pain.
At least he looks fun and interesting.
spoiler[His appetite reminds me of Luffy from One Piece.]
It's nice they threw in some funny parts.
spoiler[Satomi] looks interesting as well, but he keeps conflicting with spoiler[Shino.]
spoiler[Sousuke's dog attracting thing] was pretty LOL

This is a pretty decent series, but I admit that I'm a sucker for Japanese folklore/youkai shows. The fact that you have plenty of youkai in this show is enough to keep me watching. I can see how it would turn off many viewers, given the the male-to-female ratio.

I think what also is fun about it is the VA choices. I absolutely love the fact that Shino is voiced by the same person who does Natsu from Fairy Tail. The distinctive characteristics of that voice seem to mesh well with Shino's character. And the choice of the crow's voice actor to be the one who does Eiji from Bakuman is likewise interesting. I can't help but chuckle whenever the crow speaks.

One criticism I have is that the pacing seems to be a bit off. Also, I can't quite pin down what era this is supposed to be taking place in, because the character designs don't mesh that well with the surroundings. It wasn't bad in the first episode, but I couldn't shake it off in this episode.

I really loved the previous anime treatment of the legend, but I'm not really expecting this to live up to either. Certainly nothing to rave about yet. I'll probably stick with it though, and just kick back and enjoy the scenery. Smile

Episode 3

spoiler[Nothing much was going on this time.
Mostly Shino relaxing and having fun.
The history lesson part was interesting.
He does act like a brat most of the time too..
Wish they made him a bit more grown up, but with similar personality.
Genpachi finally escaped. I'm glad because they tortured him more than enough.
Interesting how they always put the short action scenes at the beginning or the end.]

Maybe now things will finally get moving.

Given the OP images, I was wondering if he was going to be stuck there the whole series. Smile

This week's episode was rather good, I thought. I think the introduction of an overarching plot and more context to the situation was welcome.

Episode 4

spoiler[So those three got rescued by the fuzzy black one eyed ball.
Those monks are really bad news..
Genpachi seems to be doing just fine now.
I'm glad he's finally free. His story was very interesting.
Those monks just don't quit, but looks like they got what they deserved.]

Episode 5

spoiler[Shino really is a special kid in every way.
His stubbornness can sometimes even be funny.
At least this time we got some new info about other guys too.
Shino meets sweet Ayane and dangerous Chikage.
So Hamaji got herself a friend to play with.
The lantern festival was really nice.
Looks like Shino found an unexpected friend in Hibiki/Chikage.]
