All right, I'm just curious right now: why is it that Funimation is insisting lately on releasing some of their properties in BD-size cases... housed in DVD-size slipcases. Not that I'm really all that mad about it or anything, but it's kinda making my growing Shakugan no Shana video collection look inconsistent: season 1, the movie, season 2 part 2, and S all come in a DVD-size slipcase that is modified to hold the BD. Which is nice, but what's the point? It's kinda weird for season 2 part 2 because the part 1 limited edition comes in a chipboard box that is BD-sized, meaning that if you want it to hold part 2 as well, you have to take the slipcase off and toss it aside somewhere. Same idea with Steins;Gate part 2.

This is what happens when you try to please everyone. It's as simple as that. They need to put their foot down and do one thing. Either everything is DVD sized, or everything is BD sized - no compromises. No matter what you do people will whine (not saying you are), so you might as well at least have uniformity.

Personally, I think the problem is less the need for standardization overall, and more the need for standardization within a series. I have no problem with either size (although I prefer DVD-size CASES due to the way I shelve my collection), but at least make sure that an entire series is released to look uniform.

To answer your question TC, drugs are bad, alright? Well, unless it's LSD or painkillers - the latter of which you should use only if you have to. Perhaps the...box...designer...people and Funi didn't get that message back in high school. |

Here's what I did: Took the DVDs out of Season two, and put all of the blurays into one case. Then, took the insert and blurays of Season 1 and put them in the now empty case of Season 2. Season 1's insert will have to be folded 2cm on each end to slide into it, but a small price to pay to put both seasons into the cases, which fit into the box nicely. Then, take the DVDs and the Season 2 insert and put them into the Season 1 case. Problem solved.

You know...you can just throw away/recycle the slipcases you deem useless so they're all BD sized, novel concept I know, and keep the ones you want DVD sized. The idea, as mentioned above, is them catering to the whiny complainers who complain about trivial things like package size by giving them options as a cosmetic solution to their OCD crises.
Personally, I love how my collection looks with all the different types, sizes, and colors of packaging; gives it character and uniqueness. I have all kinds of different stuff like tins, artboxed complete series, steelbooks, thinpacks, bricks, lite boxes, stackpacks, digipacks, singles, SAVE sets, etc. Heck I even put them all spine/box artwork side out so it looks even more chaotic. Personally, it's never really bothered me that much. As long as I get a chance to own a physical copy of the series, and the packaging isn't of a sort that could potentially damage the discs (ie. spindle cases), I'm pretty much cool with any sort of box regardless of it's shape.
My bookshelf has a motley collection of BD and DVD sized artboxes and slipcovers of every size, sort, and fashion. My Hellsing Ultimate and Panty & Stocking BD chipboard boxes are laying right next to my double-thick Planetes clamshell case and my paper-thin Noein cardboard artbox. On my top shelf, I've got the diamond plate Coyote Ragtime Show steelcase sitting right next to my transparent plastic Legend of Black Heaven slipcase and my Nerima Daikon Brothers hard-as-a-rock ADV artbox. Doesn't bother me a single bit. In my honest opinion, having a diverse, eclectic collection adds character.

From what I understand it has to do with retail shelving; namely that big box retailers like Wal Mart and Target (which is still where a lot of sales comes from) aren't as likely to pick up titles (especially box sets) that are BD-sized while in packaging. Just seems to be the way it is. |

I just cut off the bottom of the slipcase instead of throwing it out completely. It's going to be spending most of the time just on the shelf with only the spine showing anyway. But that would probably give OCD people a heart attack.

Personally I just recycle the slipcovers rather than keep them, but I know there are people that like to collect them. I agree that the bigger problem is the need for uniformity within a single title's releases.

I'm pretty sure the slipcovers with the empty space on the bottom are meant to be tossed, both shana S2 part 2 and the bluray of strike witches S1 are like that, and both have a first part or a second season with a chipboard box that the slipcover isn't gonna fit in.
As for slipcovers with the blank space on top; I think these are generally for clamshells, both shana S1 and Black lagoon have it. I'm gonna keep those however, as silly as they are, i like the big, glossy cover art and i like that it's not covered by the plastic that keeps the regular covers in place. |

I have no problem with slip cases, what I do have a problem is when they make the DVD case juts slightly larger and the Slip case is very tight on the DVD case and makes it very hard to take out.
I had this happen with a recent purchase of Batman Gotham Knight The 2 DVD Special Edition. I can't even replace it with a different DVD case because of the very slight differences in size. It only is about 1cm difference but that is enough to where it is a problem and the DVD other then the one that came with box will only fit in the slip case or it budges out like crazy. Why make a slip case so tight where it makes it difficult to get the product out of? |

That's what I would presume is the primary reason as well. Every bit helps on a shelf. I plan to keep the single titles that don't have a box to go in in the slip cases. My collection is mostly dvds, so blu-rays stick out more anyway, not that I mind, but they do blend better in the slip cases. I imagine that Funi expects most people to toss them. |
