Hello. I apologize if this has been asked before, but I was wondering what stores in particular carry a good supply of current anime DVDs? I've been trying to find the new Bodacious Space Pirates DVD with no success. The only store near us that has a section specifically for anime is Best Buy. I've checked two stores and neither of them have it. So, is it possible to find DVDs at a store somewhere or am I just going to have to order it and other anime online, like on Amazon or something? Thanks!

best buy can order it for you if you talk to a sales associate and have it shipped to the store or your house.

it's best just to order online though, it's cheaper and a larger selection.
anime in retail stores is pretty dead.

I second that.

Also, other than for obscure items I have found that Amazon typically has a lower prices than the anime-specialty sites. And the availability is about the same. Has anyone else had this experience consistently the way I have?

You're definitely going to want to buy from either Amazon or RightStuf. Which is cheaper can vary depending on what sales are going on and whether you've boughten a GotAnime membership.

It's true that in both price and selection the internet easily beats BestBuy, but I sometimes do miss being able to pick out the actual DVD and get it immediately. It's probably nostalgia, given that the first few series I bought came through BestBuy, 1 volume at a time, but the feeling's something I just don't get online.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's the same with books. Even if it costs more, I prefer to get it at a store.

But I understand what everyone's saying. It'd be more efficient to just get it online.

As others have pointed out, it's getting tough to find anime DVD's at big box retailers. Your best bet is probably specialty retailers. You're most likely to find anime DVD's at places like FYE (but of course, you will pay full suggested retail!) or Moviestop (which is a regional chain) does still stock new anime DVD's. However, the Moviestop near me leans heavily towards Funi releases; I seldom see Sentai there.

Unless of course, you happen to have an awesome comic shop nearby.

If you ever do decide to start shopping online instead, the absolute best place to buy anime is RightStuf.com.

Their prices, sales, and customer service are absolutely top notch. You'll even see their president ShawneK and the RightStufSpecialsMinion pop up on these boards from time to time.

If you're looking to get anime that was released fairly recently and widely available, then Rightstuf would be a great asset in terms of price and customer service. If you pre-order anything from them, you can even get your DVDs/ Blu-Rays a couple weeks before the actual release date if Rightstuf has them in stock. If you are looking for any anime that is older and out of print, your best bet would be looking around Amazon or E-Bay. While Rightstuf will usually have older DVDs in stock, there isn't a guarantee they will have the entire series on them if they are selling singles volumes.

In terms of buying anime, getting stuff from online is becoming increasingly preferable over buying it from retail stores. With anime back to being a niche market since the early to mid 2000s boom, retailers are having less anime in stock and even if they have something, there's no guarantee they will have a complete series in its entirety on them, especially for longer shows sold over multiple boxsets. Not to mention said stores sell the titles at their full retail price in many instances, making them more costly than getting them online.

I miss the days when we had a Media Play and Best Buy in town both with really big anime DVD sections. Media Play is gone of course and the Local Best Buy still has a few anime DVD/BD but its nothing like it use to be. Personally, I have always perfered to purchase as much as I can from the local stores, even if they are big box retailers. I don't mind spending a few extra dollars locally over buying everything online. Maybe its weird, but I like to think shopping locally at least helps give those high school and college kids jobs to work at. Even with that said, I don't think I've purchased an anime dvd locally in over a year, just isn't a good selection of titles plus my budget being lower for that stuff lately.

The local Barnes n Noble carries anime dvds, but they are usually just too expensive to purchase from them outside of a sale combined with having a membership card, and even then its not a deal either. Our Walmart also carries a few of the newer more "mainstream" Viz Media releases.

As far as online shopping, I've only used RightStuf and Amazon. I haven't had any issues with either one, other than they make my wallet too light at times.

For the most part I've used Amazon, so that would be the best place to look for first of all.

Half Price Books, at least in my area, is a pretty good source for anime and manga, and not just used either. I find a lot of new anime that still has the wrap on it. Although, it is a very mixed bag and they often don't have all of a series, especially manga-wise. But it is certainly worth a look.

I live close to Little Tokyo (in Los Angeles), which has some places you can get anime and manga (along with other anime/japanese related goodies), the best places for that being Anime Jungle and Kinokuniya Bookstore (the latter being better for manga).

Amoeba Music also has a surprisingly big anime section there, though I go there more for music, never bought an anime from there, besides maybe a movie or two.

Though like everyone says, the best place these days is Rightstuf or Amazon, thats where I buy most my anime (amazon less so since they started adding tax in California). Buying anime online can $5 to $10 to sometimes even $20 dollars cheaper than buying at a best buy. The only time I buy anime from best buy anymore is if I get a gift card for it

There is also, of course, buying at anime conventions if you'd rather pick up from the shelf

No, usually Rightstuf.com is the cheapest for me though occasionally Amazon does price older titles like the SAVE sets lower and VIZ titles too. If your policy is to wait for later releases then Amazon could be cheaper. If you do lots of pre-ordering like I do, then Rightstuf usually beats them out. Price comparison before you go with either place never hurts though.

Best Buy I know does site to store. That is if they have it available at any of there warehouses that is. The things with them is you can order your copy from bestbuys website and you can even pay in cash if you don't have a credit/debit card. Though you need to make sure you choose that option when you check out.

You do have FYE but for the most part stay away from them when it comes to anime. Often enough the prices for even used copies is way over price. On a rare occasion I will find a really good price on something there but that is maybe once or twice a year. Also there selection is mostly DBZ and stuff that no one wants anymore.

Though as everyone else has sad majority of anything you're looking for will be at Amazon or Rightstuf.
