Hey I really thought the randomness in FLCL was really funny and enjoyable to watch. One thing I'm curious about is that Haruko sometimes calls Naota a pyon. I was wondering if anyone knew if this word means anything or is a play on words of some kind, or if it's just something random and made up.

I seem to recall that she calls him "Naota-pyon", that is, she uses an honorific. Assuming my recollection is correct, let me explain that particular honorific. The Japanese onomatopoietic term for the sound made by something (e.g. a bunny rabbit) bounding around is pyon. For some obscure reason, this has found its way into the list of honorifics, as an honorific for very special circumstances. Specifically, -pyon is an honorific used as a term of silly intimacy among couples. That is, it is the Japanese equivalent of a wife calling her husband "honey-bunny". Ick. Anyway, Haruko is making fun of Naota. - abunai |
