So I was walking in FYE today (after having braved Abercrombie for the first time) and walked by Lain in the Anime section. The artwork caught my attention immediately. But I didn't buy it (Quite frankly, it should be a mortal sin to sell any DVD for 30 bucks, but that's my opinion).
Reading up about it on ANN was a little helpful but i'm just interested, for those who have seen it is it really good? Right now i'm into NGE and FMA as some of my highlights. It just looked and sounded really interesting. |

If you enjoy NGE, my guess is you would enjoy Lain as well. It's a very philosophical take on the cyberpunk genre about a girl who gradually becomes more and more disconnected from reality and engulfed in a computer world called "The Wired" (in other words, the internet). There isn't a tremendous amount of action in Lain (let's face it, the pacing is actually very slow); if you love anime with lots of fighting scenes then this may not be the best choice for you to purchase. But if you love philosophy, Lain thrives on tackling big ideas and theories, such as what makes a person human and the significance of the "meat" body compared to the mind--a theme that is very prevalent in most cyberpunk titles. Lain's greatest strength lies in making the viewer really think about larger, more abstract ideas than are normally presented in the average anime. If this sounds even remotely interesting to you, I'd recommend checking it out. Lain has a strong fan following as well, so I'm sure there will be others to echo these sentiments. Personally, I love it.
You can find a box set for the entire series of Lain that is actually quite affordable. I found mine at Best Buy for $39.99. |

I really like Serial Experiments Lain because it seemed to be a lot different from most of the generic anime out there. It's also an anime that gets into your mind and makes you actually think about what going on rather than just staring blankly at the screen. I was pretty captivated by the series and I plan on watching it again at some point...since I think it's one of those series that you need to watch a few times to get completely understand or get the full effect.
Anyway, just offering a second opinion but I think it's worth it. As said before, if you liked NGE you will probably like Lain. |

I would recommend this show and I understood little of the show when I watched it but I'll probably go through the show again to grasp more of it. My friend who has never really watched an anime that makes you think was even more confused than I was when I gave him the first DVD.

Lain is amazing. It makes you think, has a sweet soundtrack, and is rather weird, though makes just enough sense to connect everything and make you want more

NGE and FMA? You'll love Lain. I happened to love it and I love both FMA and NGE. Lain is in the same league. |

It's a series for people who like to exercise their brains, complicated, technical, and confusing as hell. It also has the advantage of being short and easy on the wallet. I loved it. Watched it when it was on TV and bought the boxset. It's got a great storyline and good set of characters but don't expect too much action as it's more of a mystery and a drama.

Don't buy that for $30, find the box set for $40. (Yes, it's the legit box set.) Lain was a challenge to get through, but it was worth it. Yes, it's slow-moving and confusing, but there is a story behind it all, along with commentary about people, computers, and the virtual world that we're interacting in right now. The art is truly something else, as the standard city scenes become surreal, and the online world gets its own warped artistic treatment. So to me, Lain was worth $40, and I'll certainly watch it again to understand it better. If you like the art style, I'd also recommend Haibane Renmei, which is also a slow-moving and strange series, though it's more straightforward than Lain. |

If you need action with your anime, you might find yourself a bit bored sometimes, because there's not a lot of action in Lain. If you can get along without action, then it's really enjoyable. For someone like me, lack of action is a problem, but I still really liked Lain, because where it lacked in action, it really made up for with everything else. It's a lot different than any other title out there, and it's the one anime that confuses me to this day, but I've only seen it 1.5 times. I'm sure if I watched it a few more times I'd finally understand it.
The storyline and the characters are the main attraction with Lain. It delivers very well in both. Especially the storyline if you're an internet or techno freak. Anyway, if what everyone's said sounds intriquing enough, pick it up. |
