Ok I know this topic may seem strange asking for anime characters that people find inspiring but ehh you don't have to reply to that, you could just name an unforgetable character that has made a great impact on you or more than 1 character.
Anyways here are some characters that I find inspiring and/or unforgetable that had an impact on me:
Misuzu, Air - Misuzu has got to be one of the most inspiring characters to me as she knew she went through all that pain and still she did her best to reach her "final" goal at the end (in both the TV series and Movie versions). What makes this even more inspiring was that she did all this with a smile so as not to worry the others around her. Also seeing her going through her final struggles to reach that goal was just purely inspiring to me. She has got to be one of the best characters ever concieved in imagination ever in my opinion.
Morita, Honey & Clover - Morita has been the most unforgetable characters that i've ever seen. His pure creativity and boldness in his art are what inspires me to perfect my ideas and artwork to its fullest. His acts of craziness have also influenced me into being more open with my ideas and seeing them through in my social environments.

not strange, just silly, and i like silly so anyways....
i find Ichigo (bleach) ver inspiring. He's just got his values in the right places (like in the first episode when he's willing to die to save his sisters), he's strong, and not really a bad dude.
I second that on Misuzu, for all of the same reasons.

While the entire band of Beck:Mongolian Chop Squad have their inspiring points, the main character Koyuki is definately the most inspiring. He's a character in an anime who actually had to work for his talent. He wasn't already an uber guitarist or a star quality vocalist. Though he already had above average talent in both those areas to begin with, we were still able to see him truly grow. We saw him practice, we saw him learn and in all, it must have taken him about 1 1/2 to 2 years time to get to where he was at in the end. It's one of those rare anime shows that actually makes you beleive you can realistically do what they did and it's all because Koyuki is your everyman who just put his time and energy into something he loved.

You severely underestimate Morita - it's insulting since I have him as my avatar. :P
He's not simply a creative artist that inspired. He was the source of wisdom and inspiration for all characters in Honey and Clover. He's the person who works in the back and pushes everyone along. His seemingly careless personality is a disguise; his artwork is only a reflection of his genius, not his creative talents as an "artist". He says all the right things at the right time and to top it all off, he's humorous. He's the dual role of the wisest man and the comic relief.[/spoiler]

Sorata, X tv he's prophisised be of great aid to the Kamui of Air but die defending the woman he loves. Instead of becoming morose about a fixed fate for a 17 year old he is cheerful, wise, annoying, and brave.
Kino, Kino's Journey: Here is a character who is wise, always looking at the value of things.
All the best,
Nani?

Yes, absolutely, but that's not even the half of it. Kino transcends bias to the point that it almost becomes a bias in itself. And just when you start to think Kino's character is only a metaphor for impartial observation and critical thinking itself, an emotional side of Kino is shown; like when she watches in dismay as the country is destroyed in the final episode, or when she considers the ring given to her by the three stranded men. I find Kino to be the very embodiment of Existentialism, and a fantastic inspiration.

Naota from FLCL.
He's just...a great character.
He's that kid, who never really had a childhood. Always trying to be older and looking up. He has his older brother as a type of role model and when Haruko shows up, he doesn't want to be "a kid". He has to handle some unique situations and always gives it a kind of nonchalant attitude, "too cool", until he really has to deal with something just ODD. One of my favorite characters, quite unique I think. Just a kid in a boring little town.

Wow, haven't seen you in awhile Nani?.
Anyways, for me it would be Reki and Rakka from Haibane Renmei. Both for seeking and obtaining their redemption and facing the uncertainty of their situation boldly making true efforts to better themselves and those around them.
Also Tsubasa and Hikaru from Figure 17 simply because there was so much character development and depth in that show it's hard to forget them as it follows every aspect of their life so closely as you watch how Tsubasa grows due to Hikaru's presence.

well, in FLCL i always found kanti to be the coolest and most admirable. He never said anything (i don't think he could but) and he helped out his buddies when they needed it (especially in brittle bullet and also in firestarter)

I think I might be the only person who like Takemoto in H&C rather than Morita. People I find inspiring include Takemoto(last 3 eps), almost went on a little trip myself. Morita is a great character, and people already described him pretty closely, but he didn't really put any inspiration into me.
Characters I find memorable are:
Takemoto from Honey and Clover because of the last 3 eps.
Lime from Saber Marionette series because she's adorable!
Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi first character I fell in love with, and got me attracted to anime all together.

Existentialism, really? If you are referring to the series as a whole, I wholeheartedly agree with you, but just the character herself? I'd be interested to hear your thery.
A character who has always inspired me is Juna from Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna. She undergoes an amazing transformation (figuratively, not literally--although she undergoes one of those as well ) from a normal Japanese high school girl with mostly self-interest in mind to an understanding, empathetic heroine willing to give up everything--including her voice--to protect everyone she loves. And what makes that even MORE amazing is that Juna feels love and affinity for every person on the planet, along with all life forms. That one person can have that much tenderness astonishes and touches me. Also, watching Juna in each episode as she not only learns something new about humanity, but applies it to her own personal life and developing philosophy is incredibly inspiring. It makes me want to do my best to be patient with others, be open to learning about different theories and life choices, and make my life the best it can be--not just for me, but for the people around me.

I found Hayashibara Megumi's younger voice to be extremely irritating... I couldn't stand Saber Marionette or Lina Inverse. Maybe I'm not meant to watch older anime. Her voice in Cowboy Bebop was exotic though. >.<

I would have to choose Aya Mikage from Ceres, in the beginning, she's a spoiled brat who grows up and becomes a true woman. She went throught hell and and came out of it, not necessarily unscarred, but stronger.
Another would be Makoto Kino (Sailor Jupiter) from Sailor Moon. While she's the strongest one in the group, she's also the most feminine and empathic (next to Sailor Moon). She had to grow up alone and became stronger for it as well.
Some others: Ryo Hayakawa from Princess Nine getting through finding out her father was thrown out of baseball for being a "cheat". and Robin Sena from Witch Hunter Robin and having to deal with the fact that she is what she's been hunting...a Witch.
