Hahaha I can't even begin to express how many times this has happened to me! Laughing I think Princess Tutu is the worst offender at this point, if I were to tally it up. I wish it had a better title so I could get people to at least give it a chance! Anime cry (Of course, after giving them the title I have to give them a brief synopsis, which is also very difficult to do with that series without making myself sound insane for liking it...)

Almost any conversation about how awesome Princess Tutu is must be prefaced with a discussion about how stupid/ridiculous the title is!

This is why I've never been upset with American companies changing the title they put on the DVD/Blu-Ray box cover for a series. I can think of sooo many titles that wouldn't have had a prayer at sales had they been given their actual titles.

And then there are the ones where the English titles is actually *more* ridiculous.

(Tweeny Witches I am looking at you. Also Bodacious Space Pirates.)

Addendum: Princess Tutu's name has never bothered me, it is an accurate title for the show after all.

Can we get more tiles like Ultimate Mop Daisuke? Smile Simple, to-the-point, honest, and great for people who like slice-of-life shows mixed with shonen action.

@Pelianth
It may be accurate, but it's also incredibly awkward to try to explain to people! xD

@Kohii
Ah, yes. Spice and Wolf was another. I think any series with the word "spice" in the title ends up being a very difficult sell. "Milky" or any variation of that word is also very awkward.

And not to be outdone:

I'm more fond of the Sora no Woto versions, like so:

But I digress, as I am quite prone to doing. Personally, I've never really run into the awkward/ridiculous/just plain weird title problem; come to think of it, though, I've never really gone out of my way to recommend titles to other people (at least apart from my uni's old anime club, and they're the type to disregard titles as long as they find the plot summaries interesting).

A lot of English titles seem to hit hard with this - 'My Bride is a Mermaid' and 'Hayate the Combat Butler' can be difficult to recommend without prompting a laugh from whoever you're talking to - but I think the worst offender I've personally come across would have to be Tiger and Bunny. Any recommendation I make for it has to be followed up with lengthy disclaimers of 'no, it's not aimed at three-year-olds, it's an action show about...'

This is why I have never recommended or spoke of Kiddy Grade in public. Ever.

YES Tiger and Bunny. I keep trying to recommend it to friends who like western superheroes and older Toonami/Adult Swim broadcast anime and they won't even give it a look.

Also Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I think people lose interest halfway through the long title?

My favorite comic in awhile. Hilarious and oh so true. Many a time have I unfairly judged a series based on its ridiculous, mindscrewy, perverse, or otherwise funny title.

I'd love to hear others' stories of the weirdest titles they've come across, be they manga or anime. Whether or not the series turned out to be good or bad is a bonus discussion.

Some series whose titles I found bizarre but later came to love include:
Quote:
Boogiepop Phantom
Durarara!!
Baccano!
The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross
My Little Monster/The Devil Seated Next to You
No Touching At All
Bleach
No. 6
Only The Ring Finger Knows
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Rust Blaster
Seven Days: Monday-Thursday & Friday-Sunday
Bakemonogatari/Ghostory
Solanin
Darker than Black
The Daily Lives of High School Boys
Chihayafuru
House of Five Leaves
Maid-sama!
Mawaru Penguindrum
Un-Go
Star Driver
Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle
FLCL
Fruits Basket
Kamisama Dolls
Loups=Garous
Ouran High School Host Club
R.O.D the TV/Read or Die
S-CRY-ed
Sukisho/I Like What I Like, So There!
Baka and Test - Summon the Beasts/Idiots, Tests, and Summoned Beasts
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
Black Rock Shooter
We Were There/Bokura ga Ita
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Fate/Zero
The Future Diary
Hyouka
Library War
Natsuyuki Rendezvous
Outlaw Star
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai Champloo
xxxHOLiC
Blast of Tempest: The Civilization Blaster
Angel Beats!
Lucky Star
Acid Town
Land of The Blindfolded
D.Gray-Man
Dorohedoro
Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya
DOGS: Bullets & Carnage
Takeru - Opera Susanoh Sword of the Devil
Hybrid Child
Karneval
Kitchen Princess
Natsume's Book of Friends
Alive: The Final Evolution
Spice & Wolf
Ōoku: The Inner Chambers
Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei
A Certain Scientific Railgun

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!/Home Tutor Hitman Reborn!
Legal Drug

It's funny also when the company themselves try and make it sound legitimate. At Animazement last year, Funimation had a panel where they were talking about new releases and came upon "Cat Planet Cuties". This woman tried so hard to convince us it's not garbage.
To be fair, I ended up watching it just to see if it was as bad as I thought. It's alright, a lot better than I thought.

Yah, that's a good example of an unfortunate title. It makes the show sound like child porn or something.
