I don't regret buying this series at all, but I do agree that it slumps and shows its seams a bit toward the end. I grew extremely annoyed at how often Jo interrupted things. It got to the point that whenever a character was about to say something important, I knew Jo would call Kazehaya's name. You could make a drinking game out of it. Sure Pin was thrown into the "interrupting" mix too, but at least he usually had something funny to say.
I was really impressed with how well developed these three were. I love seeing them get a "shout out". |

I also rated this as a B+, because despite the character relationships going backwards from the first season, the ending is pretty nice. And Sawako and Kazehaya are just so darn nice it is impossible to be angry at them.
I will be buying this release, but I'm not sure I will actually watch it, given the bad subtitles it apparently has. |

This show was definitely one of my favorite romances (well top 20 at least) but i can definitely agree that the second season slumped until the ending.

I didn't notice anything wrong with them. But then again, I haven't seen any fansubs to compare them to. Of course, who's to say whether those fansubs are any better? |

I think this and the following posts should answer your question. |

It's a shame "Kimi ni Todoke" doesn't have an English dub. It would have been great. I've read the manga and it's pretty good. This show,I think, deserves a dub. I'd love to hear it,wouldn't you?

I see that the reviewer didn't notice anything unusual about the subtitles in those conversations. This prompted me to do yet another sanity check. Sure enough, in the very last scene, the dialog as shown in the subtitles goes like this: spoiler[Kazehaya: I would never be that wasteful. I used to think I was in a one-sided crush. Now I'm worried that I'm monopolizing our time together. Sawako: (to the 4th wall) I told Kazehaya my feelings. And he feels the same!] I don't know - maybe there's some kind of explanation for Kazehaya's last statement somewhere in the context that I just didn't notice. However, as I see it now, the only sensible response by Sawako to what he said should have been something more like "Huh? What'd you say? spoiler[You're worried that you're monopolizing our time together? What about me? How do you feel about me?"] Instead, by saying that spoiler["he feels the same",] she's identifying with spoiler[his worry that he's monopolizing their time together.] It's not an interpretation - it's what the subtitles say! I still prefer to believe the fansub version you provided. At least it makes sense. |

Um, pardon if this seems like an insulting question, but why would you buy something you don't plan on watching? Isn't that a waste of your money? |

He might be like me and have a rule where if I watch all of the fansubs, I buy the release once it legally comes out.

Also, folks who play with BluRay authoring and recording can always replace the NISA subtitle tracks with the fansubs tracks, provided the fansubs tracks can be obtained in standalone files. Sometimes they can. Of course there's always the option to manually edit the offending subtitle dialogue too, provided there isn't too much of it. For example, with just the fansub excerpts dtm42 provided in that other thread, the NISA-authored nonsense spewed in the last scene could easily be fixed. And yes, there are perverse idiots like me who would actually go to that extreme. Of course, I'm not speaking for dtm42 in this context!!! Once again I'd like to underscore how much I like this series as a whole. Everything the reviewer and the rest of us have been saying about its positive points is right on. That's why I'm so interested in trying to make sense out of that last scene. The fansubs "do it right." NISA doesn't. |

No it isn't a waste of my money. If I've watched more than three episodes of something using fansubs then I commit myself - no matter how good or bad the show turned out to be - to buying the eventual Australasian home video release. That way I can have a clear conscience and feel morally justified in using fansubs. It means I'm not leeching, I'm simply trying before I buy. And then of course there is supporting companies as well. I enjoyed Kimi ni Todoke a lot despite some fairly annoying flaws, so I want to show my appreciation to the Japanese makers of the show by buying an official licensed copy. I also want to support any company who can bring it to New Zealand. And yes, generally-speaking it has to be released in New Zealand before I'll buy it because I don't want to support American companies, I want to support Australasian companies. It's just how I roll. Finally, there is the matter of video formats. Oceania uses Region 4 DVD and Region B Blu-Ray formats, while America does not. If Kimi ni Todoke was dubbed into English then I probably would at least watch a few episodes of the dub, but with no dub there's little reason to check it out. I still have the fansubs, and AlanMintaka has convinced me that the official subs have too many problems. I of course will not use that as an excuse to avoid buying the show, because I am thankful it was licensed at all. But it does put me off watching it. So long story short, I am buying to support the people who made it, the people who brought it over here, and to keep my conscience clean. Even if I never watch the official release, that is still three very good reasons to buy it. |

And I agree with that philosophy, which is why anything I might do to "fix" the subtitles will be done to the copy I purchased from NISA, for personal viewing in the privacy of my own home. From the financial standpoint of the producers and distributors, it won't make any difference in the bottom line. They made their sale. |

I didn't know that was even possible - impressive. @dtm42 I figured that might be your justification. I personally could never afford to atone for my bad old days in college - now I just don't watch fansubs. But I do have to say... if you hate the rest of it, aren't you encouraging companies to license product you hate by buying it? In the long run, from a marketing perspective, wouldn't be better to purchase shows you really like (like Kimi ni Todoke)? Also, do you ever re-sell a series that you purchased but don't care for? As in, you pay full price to support the industry but then get some of the money back by getting it off your hands? |

Well, I'm certainly not looking forward to buying Deadman Wonderland, an absolutely terrible show. But I watched it so I have to buy it. Same with the other shows I didn't like. If it encourages companies to license other crap like it then well that's my fault for watching it in the first place. Thankfully it hasn't happened too often; I usually bail on shows I don't like before I watch the fourth episode.
I can never be bothered selling off my stuff, not even on online auction sites like Trademe. So with the DVDs I don't want to keep, I either give them away to friends or just let them sit in a couple of huge plastic storage containers underneath my bed. But like I said before, thankfully I haven't had to do this too often. And yeah, I would love to know how to take the fan subtitles and add them to the Blu-Ray release. I think I only downloaded both seasons of Kimi ni Todoke in 480p, so seeing it in 720p (with decent subtitles) might be nice. I do respect the people with the technical know-how to do all of that stuff, and I wish schools would teach it to students (even if it would cause a huge outcry about copyright violations). |

No, trust me on this - if I can do it, it's not impressive. It just takes some big bucks for DVD/BluRay editing and authoring software, and additional throwaway cash for all the blank media discs I screw up before I get any that work right. |
