Ok, this isn't about the manga itself, but about Yen Press' logic.
Why did they print this manga, an on-going series, in 2-in-1 editions? Why not singles and give us the original covers, instead having to commission all new ones? Was it that much trouble to print it off as single volumes with the original cover that Odagiri Hotaru drew and painted in the first place? |

I would assume that since it is such a niche title to begin with, and being a shoujo manga with a tiny piece of BL/slash in it, I really cannot see it ever being a huge seller for them. More publishers are going for the 2 in 1 or even 3 in 1 because it cuts down on their SKU's and publishing costs. I am sure it cost less to produce a 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 than it would for singles volumes. d
I personally like the large 2 in 1 for this. I was a huge fan of Odagiri and her BL work, so moving to shoujo was a nice change of pace for me. |

I don't know about Betrayal Knows My Name specifically, but in general they do omnibuses because they can get those out faster in the long run. According to a comment by a Yen rep here, they can release an omnibus every three months and a normal volume every two. They do use the cover art from one of the volumes as the cover, and usually include the cover art of the other volume as a color page. The only omnibus I've bought from them was Olympos, which had 10 color pages at the beginning and 6 color pages in the middle, with the other volume's cover being used as the back cover. If an unknown two volume series gets that kind of treatment, I imagine Betrayal Knows My Name would get the same.

Thing is, Olympos was finished with only 2 volumes. That makes more logic to put something out that's already finished in one go.
As Betrayal Knows My name is STILL going and not really sure how long it's meant to be. And Odagiri Hotaru...doesn't seem to be in a rush to finish it off. When Yen Press catches up with the Japanese release, I RATHER NOT wait when 2 more volumes come out and I feel that's what they're going to do. Therefore lies the problem in why they even did it in the first place. |

Because it's faster and cheaper for all involved. It's as simple as that. Omnibuses have cons, but Yen decided that the pros outweigh the cons in this case. I see being caught up but having to wait longer for volumes as a better problem to have than lagging behind the Japanese releases for years and possibly never catching up.

Uh, first off, the Omnibus covers are the Japanese covers. At least, they're the same covers as are on the Japanese volumes 1, 3, and 5 at my local Kinokuniya.
Secondly, Yen Press only has licensed through either volume 9 or volume 10. Their license apparently isn't a perpetual license, they have to license each volume as it comes out. So, assuming they have volume 10, they don't know how they'll be releasing it after omnibus 5, because those volumes don't exist yet, so they can't license them yet. |

Uh, yeah they already put out the date for vol.5. It's set for February 26, 2013 and it's even on Amazon, seeing as volume 10 is about to come out or is out.
Black Butler and Pandora Hearts are on-going series, but yet, I see singles for those coming out. What's the difference between this title and those? If they was that worried about money, how come they didn't put Nabari in 2-in-1 books? By the time they started to publish it, it was 4 volumes away form being finished. Durarara, another manga was was finished, but get singles. Something finished should be the ones that get those 2-in-1 books. This is why their logic doesn't make any since to me. We have an on-going series, they put it in a bigger format. They have a series that's complete, they put out the singles. Spiral WAS DONE before they even thought about putting it out, it got singles and it took them 5 years to put it out, but could've taken half as long in the larger format. |

Maybe Yen Press decided to go with two-in-ones because the story moves so slowly, it's more satisfying when you get two volumes at a time? (or maybe that's just my opinion...) I don't think there's a definite set of rules that determines which series get omnibus releases and which get singles. It's worth noting that omnibuses have become more prevalent in the last couple years; Black Butler and Nabari no Ou and Pandora Hearts all started publication here a year or two before Betrayal; maybe if they had been licensed today the choice would have been different. (although Black Butler's definitely got enough popularity to merit single releases.)
On a side note, looking at some release dates—Nabari no Ou took 3 years to reach 10 volumes here (I think partly because the chapters were serialized in Yen+?). Black Butler took 2.5 years. On its current schedule, Betrayal will have 10 volumes worth of material out in 1.67 years, so in that sense you've gotten to read this much of the series faster than either of the others. |

The collector in me would have loved single volumes but... Money wise I like these Omnibus.
I figured they went with Omnibus because they didn't think it'd do that well... In the end though, Any English way is a good way for me. Now if only some company would release the Anime on DVD. |

The difference is that Black Butler and Pandora Hearts are more popular. Singles cost more to publish and these series are more likely to recoup the additional costs. It's the same with Nabari no Ou and Durarara (and the Durarara manga is still ongoing).
In Spiral's case, I think age is the reason it was released in singles. The oldest omnibus I know of from Yen is RomeoxJuliet, which was release in 2010. Spiral was started in 2007, so it was released before they began doing omnibuses. Yen is a company and as such, their main goal is profit. If a less popular series makes more money as an omnibus, then that's how they're going to release it, regardless of whether it's ongoing or not. |
