That was a pretty heartwarming closer, the sequence with Madoka and Lan waving bye-bye to each other especially. I thought it was a decent way to end one of these split-cour affairs, just the right amount of stuff left hanging in the air for them to start off with in July.
The chick on the beach... I think it was either Aura's human manifestation or this Yurikano character the three bishies seem so enamoured with. I don't think it's been properly explained who she is yet?
Overall, this first half really pulled me in early on, kinda lost steam a bit round the middle (not too much though, it went from an 8 to a 7 if anything) and finished pleasingly. A lot of the plot was recycled from other things but it was very self-aware of that and had a great sense of humour to go with it.
Roll on July.

First off, the animation and soundtrack are great. The soundtrack in particular really won me over. The OP is the sort of pulsing track I tend to favour ...
I really enjoyed this first episode and whilst it was easy to see where the inspiration for most of the set pieces had come from, it felt like it was a more... 'fresh' take on this kind of anime. I went into this one with no preconceptions and when it finished I was grinning. |
I couldn't agree more. It didn't matter that there were set pieces because it was done so well. It's worth watching a few episodes just for the opening theme alone.
Unfortunately, the rest of story didn't meet the expections brought about by the excellent 1st episode and gradually slid towards mediocrity. The subplots and dialogue are middle school level. For instance, I would preferred that Lan behaved more like a high princess rather than Madoka's sidekick.
I'm reserving judgement on the mechs/voxes. They are heavily defensive, with energy shields that can cover a village, what appears to be very wide area healing capability, and some other great power that didn't fully awaken. Like the main plot, there seems be much that has been kept hidden.
Besides Evangelion, the main plot also has a Macross Zero feel to it with the artifacts and the ancient civilization. I'll watch the planned continuation expecting that some of the plot weaknesses will be filled. If they're not, I'll downgrade my rating from good to decent. It's odd though, that with words like Lagrange and Bodacious in their titles, that the latter has been the more technical space anime.

Even though most of Rinne no Lagrange was more focused on the characters than the story, I can't help but feel the narrative was neglected even for a series being character-driven. More thoughts below...
Any given anime series will usually put more focus on either its story or place greater emphasis on its characters. The centralization on either the narrative or cast does not necessarily mean the ensemble or plot can be almost entirely neglected. Rinne no Lagrange focuses more on its characters but is rather neglectful of its story. While the character development and technical aspects of the show is generally good, Rinne no Lagrange’s storytelling is inadequate even taking into account the anime being character-driven.
Part of the reason for criticizing the narrative development is that it undermines the character development. Throughout most of its episodes, Rinne no Lagrange is more concerned with developing its cast rather than progressing its story to an extent that the more significant plot events occur toward the very end of the series. The neglect toward the story would not be so problematic, were it not for the fact that much of the character development for the cast is very closely tied to the history preceding the story and the preexisting lore creating the underlying plot of the anime. Madoka’s reasons for starting the Jersey Club and the way she behaves, Lan’s motivation for fighting and her status as a Princess, and Muginami’s family problems eventually show their significance to the plot in the anime’s final episodes. However, the abrupt narrative progress at the end of the series calls into question just how important the back story of the characters is. The neglected story development undermines the history of the characters which created the plot in the first place.
Still, the show’s technical aspects are usually pretty competent. The background music though fairly generic does its job of matching the mood of every scene quite well. The fights are not the most choreographed battles anime has to offer but they are consistently animated. The visuals themselves are generally vibrant without being excessively saturated in color. If there is one complaint to be had for the graphics, however, it is the lack of structure variety for the robotic trinity of Aura, Rympha, and Ignis which are piloted by Madoka, Lan, and Muginami respectively. Despite being touted by the story as legendary mechas, little more distinguishes the three robots framework than different shoulder armor and varying weapons. The lack of creativity among the protagonist robots is further exacerbated by how distinct the antagonist mechas tend to be from one another. If nothing else, the color schemes of Aura, Rympha, and Ignis represent their pilots quite well.
Thankfully, the color schemes of the robotic trinity did not become an excuse to let their respective pilots’ personalities remain confined to her assigned “element.” Madoka’s free-spiritedness matches the wind but unlike the air her flaws are not limited to being in the presence of intense turbulence. Lan is perhaps the most dynamic character as she frequently expresses a range of emotions throughout the series quite unlike her cool demeanor or matching water element. Muginami is the biggest surprise as fire does not represent her personality at all but instead shows her alienation from and desire for warmth despite her cheery attitude. As if the subversions on persona and elements were not enough, the chemistry between the three main characters is quite good because their personalities balance each other. The relationship between Madoka, Lan, and Muginami is further bolstered by the fact that their close friendship is not so quickly or easily made; strong friendship is something created over time and perseveres through trouble which Rinne no Lagrange realizes. It might feel wrong to separate Madoka, Lan, and Muginami once their bond is created and makes the finale of the show all the more bittersweet.
Unfortunately, the great character development is compromised by the storytelling’s tendency to undermine the plot which is the effect of the casts back stories in the first place. Despite some noticeable problems, Rinne no Lagrange is not a bad anime; the solid technical execution and well-done character development ensures that the series is not bad. However, it is not good either as the flawed narrative interferes with the overall product to the extent that the show being character-driven is not an excuse for its questionable storytelling. Overall, the series strengths and problems leave Rinne no Lagrange to be a flawed yet enjoyable viewing experience.

Err...you do know the show is split cour right? The assumption is that all the plot related stuff is being saved for the second half.

I would agree that the story-telling for RnL's first cours was choppy. I hope that deficiency will be corrected in the second. However, I liked the characters so much, as well as the visuals, that I forgave that aspect and just concentrated on what was enjoyable.

So I watched this thinking it was about lemon mousse because I thought it was the French for it, and now I'm utterly disappointed.

Season 2!!!
I'm reviving this topic for the new season. Also, yay, RnL is back.
I'm glad Muginami recognizes the value of accessorizing.

Personally, I liked OP 1 > OP 2.
But glad this series is back as I missed Lan and the Jersey club. Ah, good times. *woof*

Season 2, episode 1
I woke up this morning to see a wall of new episodes, about 9 to watch, sounds like it might take a while, but I see Rinne no Lagrange 2, and I feel happy, so I watched it first.
Now what to say about this episode, the most important thing to mention is the cape Muginami had on her robot, Madoka clearly saw the merit of it since the preview had her asking if that was what they were fighting over.
Glad that we got a wan (woof) from Lan, even after she found out that the greeting was just a prank on her. Kind of agree with you Stark700 about the OP song, but I liked the ED song, wait last season's was nice too. Don't know why that guy is still wearing that outfit though, at least it attracts a certain type of customer to the restaurant.

Not much to say except I'm glad it's back. Oh, and Lan's bro is a dick.

Forgot to mention that, yeah he does not look like a good person. He was going to mentally scar his own sister.

So ep 2
Well this ep sure does give a new meaning to the saying kiss and make up
I enjoyed the ep, season 2 is off to a fantastic start so far and the plot is rolling out a bit faster now. Which I'm glad about since season 1 was all about the set up. Though if Lan and Muginami's planets are going to get destroyed why not have them move move to planets outside the system they're in? I'm sure there's something they can use or at least use as a temp living space.

So we finally found out what all of the fighting was about, Lan and Muginami's planets/systems are going to crash into each other, and there is a fight over getting the power of the vox to have their planet survive. We know that Lan's brother especially plans to destroy Muginami's planet, chances are thy look down of the planet, didn't they say that it used to be a penal colony? Not sure what Muginami's side is up to, chances are it is the same, but not necessarily.
It looks like we will have more highschool hijinks before getting a way to help both sides by Madoka's cousin, and loli leader.
And the make up/out Langrange style.

Madoka sure was confused with what was going on.
Lan and Muginami on different sides, no wonder Madoka was surprised.
Guess a lot happened while she was away..
That Madoka really is a special girl who just doesn't quit no matter what.
Looks like Villagiulio has a good understanding of Madoka's current feelings.
Friendship above everything else. That's what this episode was about.
