Driland Plot Summary: In the medieval land of Driland, hunters explore ruins in search of treasures. Princess Mikoto dreams of one day becoming a hunter despite of her royal responsibility of one day assuming the throne of the country of Elua. Following the words of Bonny, an experienced hunter who is an inspiration to the future empress, Mikoto starts a journey with the desire to see the world and then come back to her homeland. The entire time I was watching this I kept thinking that this must be how their animation budget was broken down: Background: 99% Characters: 1% Plenty of animes and cartoons don't put too much effort into the background, but this one took the opposite to the extreme. |

Looks like the show may be primarily for younger audiences, was not quite as ironic as I was hoping from the picture. Still, I somewhat liked the attitude of the main female, although the tomboyish princess is not exactly unique, there is something endearing about how she appeared here. Maybe I have watched too many shows where the female lead is sexualised, that this came off differently.
Continuation of me watching is not really guaranteed, it comes of kind of kiddy and can be a bit, I can't think of the word, perhaps "lame", but I don't want to be that harsh. I like the video game like traits, it is based on a phone game or something. |

I think saying it feels like a 3D world for Maple Story would be pretty accurate. I may watch a few more episodes, but the style of the characters is very distracting.

Well, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. I had initially planned on not checking it out because the stills of the character designs I saw didn't appeal and I thought that tonally it would be pitched to a younger audience (which in a certain respect it is). However, I gave it a chance and I proclaim myself charmed. I actually kind of dig the character designs now after my initial negative feeling. Plus, I am a total sucker for fantasy-based shows, especially if they have to do with exploring ruins. Must be a hold-over from the days when I was a D&D dweeb...
I like the spunky Princess and the fact that one of her friends appears to be a middle-aged woman who wears glasses, but also kicks ass. Nice! |
