Alright, I just finished Wolf's Rain last night, and I have some questions. I definitely can't say I liked the ending from what I can tell. It seems their definition of Paradise is the world starting over time and time again. More so, it's like everyone dies and is reborn in the new world. It appeared like the main characters didn't even know or remember each other anymore. Does this mean everything that happened before is completely meaningless now? Kiba also continues to say he feels drawn to Paradise and someone is calling him there. Who is calling him? Will he ever find the real Paradise? Or are we just left to assume for ourselves? Please give me a detailed explanation of the ending of this anime, I'd really like to fully understand what really happened, what will happen, and what point was trying to be made.

ok this is how it was explained to me.. I dont really remember all of the names, but remember the human with the 1 wolf eye?? well that guy dropped his eye in the water which made the new world unclean... that is the reason why kiba is still looking for paradise... and the world will continue to reborn until everything is pure and paradise is made... thats the understanding that i got from it, some may have others... it was a good show tho

I answered this question a few months back on another thread. People seemed to really like this response so I put it in a personal scrap book of stuff I write and other people write. Rather then look up the thread I imported it from my personal file. This isn't something I've done before but here:
Original Post Well, I didn't see it as sadistic or wrong, rather "the way things are". The one thing you have to keep in mind is that the Wolf's Rain "Cosmology" deliberately resembles real world Animistic or semi Animistic myth cycles (particularly some Native American and Norse). Think of Cher reading the "Book of Moon". Now imagine yourself reading that at the "end of the world" (or something close to it) the only meaningful marker of status would be monatary wealth or that the second of three conflicts would be ended by the dropping of "husks of Ash" on "the people of the Sun" (Norse and Hopi respectively). Basically, in these cyles, humans have gradually lost connection with all other life, become greedy/corrupt and devastate the world around them. As a result, spoiler[ they act in increaseingly cruel, uncaring ways torward each other, particularly those on top (i.e. the nobles) or become self absorbed (i.e. "Zombies" of Jagura's City) or don't know quite what to do (Quint, Cher, Hub). People are either decieved/uncaring, or confused and the "nobles" are trying to get out while the gettings good and leaving the everyone else to die. They also have a sense of entitlement/belief in thier own privite connection to the divine but at the last minute such pretensions are shown to be empty.] The natural world reacts (i.e. quick massive climate change) to the abuse. Most, living a sheltered existance, are easy slaughter, and spoiler[a few fight to end and from thier remains a new world is reborn, clean and new, a Paradise, or rather an Eden, with the seeds of corruption scattered in (Darcia's eye). Therefore, Paradise is achieved. However, Paradise is a temporary state, as greed/corruption always slips in, ]and temporary or illusionary gains in "standard of Living" or "Growth" are justified/excused and again exchanged for connection with the sacred/all other living things. Thus the cycle repeats itself, with some variation. The end, spoiler[in modern Tokyo(?) with the characters reborn] is meant to suggest something about the state of the world today. If you make the connection, good, must mean spoiler[your not a "Zombie" yet. ] Part of the beauty and quality of Wolf's Rain is that it can say something important while still being entertaining to those who "don't get it". End Original Post Only thing I would add to it is that Wolf's Rain is very much about the world we in live now, about the need to create something different better instead of letting the world rott around us. Basically, the subtext is that we, like the Wolf's, need to consider having a vision of paradise that is different then the world we currently live in. All the Best, Nani? |

yea that pretty much helped put together what i was trying to say.... the ending at first made me think that all of this was pointless but the show really helped get the point across

I guess what's bothering me is 1) for the most part the entire story seems all for nothing as now the characters don't even remember each other. That just makes me mad, they came such along way and developed so much only to die and start over. 2) will they ever really find the true paradise? Or will the world just continue to be reborn over and over? Does this have an end?

yea it was really frustrating to kno that they had this long journey and the world just "resets" and they completely forget that they knew eachother at one point... and yes the world they are living in will prolly continue in that cycle until they can cleanse the world

The ending of Wolf's Rain really is very open to interpretation. The stuff concerning Darcia's eye has already been explained (corrupting the world and thus not allowing a real paradise...hence the flower that turned black), so here's another possible explanation that I came up with after finishing watching the series (and bawling my eyes out quite a bit
![]() There is no paradise, at least not in the sense that it was believed. All we have is the world we're already in. This world can be both heaven and hell at times. The old world had crumbled and needed to be reborn and given another chance to work and be good. It might not happen, but it now has a better chance than it did before. I think it's one of the best endings I've ever seen for anything, anime or otherwise. I know that it is rather sad that the characters don't remember each other anymore, and that at least three of them are no longer wolves (Kiba is debatable, I tend to believe that he is still a wolf, however it is at least clear that Tsume and Toboe are human, and if they are then I don't see any reason that Hige wouldn't also be)...but it's better than having them all be dead. |

The world reset, but considering the alternative, you have to say that's a victory. All the Best, Nani? |

This helped me out. And thank you everyone for your explanations. I think since so much of this seems open to interpretation, I'll be the optimist and say that eventually they will reach Paradise. After all, Kiba feels "called" by someone to find it, and I remember Hige even said before dying, "let's meet up again in Paradise." I doubt that will go unanswered. I believe that the heroes will meet again and remember each other from the past life. I believe eventually it will come back to their memories, especially if this will be the true Paradise. Of course, I find it disappointing that they seem to think of Paradise being a perfect earth rather than heaven, but still I find it symbolic. |

They were in paradise from the beginning. I'll also repost what I said in a past thread:
"The way I see it, they did find paradise. Paradise was where they were all along. Despite its flaws, it was paradise, but they were foolish enough to think there was something more. The world reset and went back to the way it was just before the world was being destroyed, because at that time, when everyone was going about their lives in the city, they in some way, were all happy, wether it be the four wolves finding friendship with each other, or Hub and Cher's akward relationship" See. Despite all the trouble they went through, all of them were happy at some point. Even Darcia, when that woman was still alive. |

Honestly here's my view of the ending:
Paradise is when the world is reborn and there never was a place where no change or anything like that happend. They were already in paradise which repeats itself, over and over again. My view of the ending can also support why they dont remember each other. Well, first of all we dont know if they are even wolfs anymore because we see them in their human form. Anyways... as i continue...they had rebirthed and entered the new paradise thus losing all their memory's from their past live(s). I don't really get how Darcia's eye corrupted the world...i honestly thought that when he blew up/exploded the reason why that happend is because it woulden't let a evil hearted wolf to open paradies (like i said before when i mean paradise i mean the re-incarnation of earth). Though it did let kiba because he is a pure hearted wolf and was "The chosen wolf" (or thats how the lady who tried to open paradise called him yes i forgot her name lol.) Hope this helps~ |
