Key... where on earth did this come from?
Though, I commend you for withstanding the sheer volume of incomprehensible stupidity of this show.

Quote: | Illumitoon Entertainment tried selling DVD volumes containing three episodes each. They apparently didn't sell well, though, so Illumitoon gave up after the fourth volume |
Just a small fix, but Illumitoon stopped releasing DVDs because their distributor dropped them, not for low sales, per se. Though, honestly, Illumitoon's DVD were so horribly done that they likely did get low sales.
In all honesty, if S'more had mentioned the whole "no English subs" thing early on, like after ANN ran the article that stated English subs, then I would have still bought this. But I feel that this company lied to consumers, even if it was accidental(though incompetent), so I really can't justify buying this, even though I do like the series and the English dub is excellent.

I can understand why some people would like this show because it's so over-the-top silly, and I like quite a few silly shows myself, but I actually felt my IQ drop a few points after only seeing a few minutes of this one.

Quote: | S'more Entertainment's release of the series has received some negative press for claiming on the packaging that it offers English subtitles when, in fact, the disks have no subtitling at all – not for the extensive use of on-screen text and not for the Japanese dub, either – nor were they apparently ever intended to. |
Do you mean S'More intended to not put subtitles in, or that they weren't intended to not have subtitles?
Seriously, people! Why is everyone thinking that S'More intentionally lied about the whole subtitle thing on purpose?! They said that they didn't even know the disc didn't have subs until someone pointed it out! Do you seriously think the people at S'More are a bunch of backstabbing traitors?! Come on! You have to admit, this IS their first anime work, and every anime company has its quips at the beginning! Who's to say they won't learn from their mistakes and improve later on? Have a little faith, will ya? Besides, they have Galaxy Express 999, and that anime HAS to be subbed! Not only that, they've acknowledged their mistake and plan to correct the error once sales are good! Besides, you should all be happy and grateful that S'More even had the audacity to license and re-release Bobobo when the other company kicked the bucket at four discs! If it weren't for S'More, then Bobobo would have been given the shaft, so either buy the boxset and be happy with it, errors and all, and support S'More so they can do better, or be a whiny jerk-butt and leave! Get over it!

FireChick, they themselves said the error was that the box claimed to have subs. They explicitly said there was never any intention of releasing the series with subtitles.

You'd have a good point, if it weren't for the fact that S'more is not planning on doing the subs themselves for anything. They've recently stated they want sales of 20,000-25,000 for Bobobo to even warrant doing subs, a number they likely know they will never get, and they've constantly stated that they are waiting for "subbed masters" of GE 999 TV. The only way you can get "subbed masters" nowadays if they are hardsubbed. S'more isn't an "anime company", but rather they are a niche media distributor who just decided to try out a couple of anime titles without seemingly having any idea of what goes into an anime release.

Again, this is true, but there's also the fact that S'more had about four months to actually find out and explain to everyone that Bobobo wouldn't have any subs. They just expected that Toei would have magically made subs for the show so that they wouldn't have to do so. When they saw that it wasn't going to be the case they decided to just leave the Japanese audio in for the hell of it, but didn't bother to change the specs or even reveal this until people started buying the release. Hell, when the whole "missing subs" revelation happened S'more even passed the blame onto Toei, saying that Toei never told them that subs wouldn't be included, though S'more did admit that they later knew of the few episodes Illumitoon did sub. It's incompetence in a way that just astounds.

Because this was on their official store page for the Bobobo set after they had said that they never intended it to have English subtitles (pic curteousy of MrHatAndClogs)
When they cannot even correctly give information for their products on their own web-store then it goes beyond a simple 'oops'. They made absolutely no effort whatsoever to provide correct information on their release until after people already got it in their hands.

I imagine watching this for hours straight is probably a bad idea but it's just so ridiculously funny. Still, having a JP audio track but no subtitles is pretty bad for an anime release, but this show isn't any more sophisticated or artful in it's original language so don't worry about that too much.

I'm sorry, the "it's their first release" excuse doesn't fly. It's to be expected that when people start a business, they should know how to run said business.
What if I decided to open up a restaurant tomorrow, even though I can't cook? I suppose my customers should eat my lousy food without complaint and hope that I get better?
This company is either dishonest or totally incompetent. I am not ordering Galaxy Express 999 over this. We all know it's going to end up hardsubbed, or worse.

I don't much care for the same kind of shows on Adult Swim, but I do have a bit of a soft spot for Bobobo. It is really stupid, but usually in an enjoyable way.
That said, the lack of subtitles is inexcusable, and the false advertising is just rubbing salt in the wound.

This was one of the first anime I ever watched.
All I ever remember of it was that it was the most WTF thing I had ever seen.

Even as a hardcore dubbie, I admit that S'more should've done their homework. I may pick this up when I get the chance. I'm not too much a fan of this series, but it looks pretty funny. I'm mostly looking forward to Galaxy Express 999 (I'm a sucker for the Leijiverse), but I have a GUT feeling that it's gonna be hardsubbed...

The rationale provided about requiring more sales to do subs, doesn't even make sense considering it's "free" since they already have the translation done and timed in order for there to be a dub in the first place.

I'm a fan of a lot of stupid comedy, but my memories of this show leave me with no desire for ever seeing it again. I have no idea why Toonami ever even gave it try...

If you open a restaurant tomorrow and can cook, and everything goes off without a hitch, you're still not gonna operate half as good as you'd hopefully operate 5 years later.
Anyway, even knowing this wouldn't have subs, I just had to buy it.

They're not dubbing the shows.
