Hey Key, I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but your opening paragraph here has some incorrect information. Dead Zone was originally released by Pioneer on VHS in '97 and on DVD in 2000. Pioneer's DVD release of it did have both the english and Japanese audio tracks, and although I haven't watched their DVD release, it being a dual language release would lead me to believe it was unedited. As far as the movie "The Path to Power" that was a movie for the original Dragonball series, not DBZ. Outside of that though, nice review. It's been a long time since i've seen this movie and this makes me want to go check it one of the Blockbusters around here has it for rental... |

You're right. Pioneer's release of the first three Dragon Ball Z movies, which were the Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and the Tree of Might, on DVD were unedited. All three movies had the original japanese language track and the english track. Also both tracks retained the original opening and closing music. The english track on Pioneer's release of the films also retained all the original music as well. To sum it up Pioneer's original release of the Dead Zone on DVD was dual language and completely uncut. William G. |

Hmmm, apparently we have some wrong information in our Encyclopedia about the DBZ movies, then, as that's what I based my opening statement off of. Thanks for setting things straight.
And unless this has been redubbed (and I don't think it has), the English cast listing for the movie is also completely wrong in the Encyclopedia. I'll see about submitting a correct cast list. |

Actually I remember watching the Dead Zone on Cartoon Network a long time ago, and it was indeed first dubbed by the Ocean Group. The re-release of this was redubbed with the regular FUNi VAs.

There are two different dubs, the old Pioneer one was done by Ocean, the one on the disc you reviewed was the FUNimation redub.

The main reason FUNi re-released Dead Zone was so that you could hear it with the FUNi VAs. Seems like some people are missing the whole point of the re-release when they say that it has the old voice cast still.

You rang? ^_~ It looks like most of the information has been corrected; I didn't get to read through the review before all the replies came, but it does seem like a good bit of information has been fixed. The only thing that could be considered "edited" in the original joint-FUNimation/Pioneer release back in 1997 was that the ending theme was shrunk up to the corner with the Japanese text on the side removed; only the English credits could be seen. FUNimation's re-release has an alternate angle that includes the Japanese text-credits. Furthermore, if anything, this re-release is *more* edited on the English dub side than the original release. The original release featured the original Japanese score (in stereo, no less) on the dub side, along with a rather faithful translation. The re-release (re-dubbed with all of FUNimation's current in-house case, as opposed to the Ocean cast) features an all-new musical score on the dub side, and dialogue that... ehh... isn't the same as it used to be ^^;;. Man, I remember when they had this at Blockbuster on VHS. Everybody treated it like it was porn or something back then. Needless to say I was dissapointed when I finally got a chance to see it and found what was really goin on.
But seriously though, it's a good movie. It actually turned me on to this whole anime scene. |

Actually, the DVD WAS released in 1997 http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/292.php 12/16/1997 to be accurate. The dub only edited TV version via Pioneer came out in 1999. A re-release in a standard keepcase format may have come out in 2000 though as the original 1997 release was in the jewel case with the cardboard cover. |

Oh, okay. I found the 2000 release date on Amazon and was going off of that. So, I guess I probably should've checked around a bit more to make sure I was giving accurate information... |

I wouldn't recommend buying this DVD and try to find the old Geneon releases. One thing I didn't like is how FUNimation changed the BGM in the dub and edited out the original OP and placed their own in. Geneon's dub keeps the original BGM, and leaves Gohan's song completely unaltered. Also Geneon's dub has slightly harsher language. FUNimation basically re-released an inferior product.

Yeah, I can vouch for this. I've got the original, cardboard-with-jewel-case release from the original print, whereas my site-buddy Julian has the re-print in the standard keepcase. Pioneer's original releases of the first three DBZ movies *all* came in the cardboard boxes, but were later re-released with the standard keepcases. So technically, FUNimation's re-release is actually the *third* release on DVD in this country  .
And if you want to count the original TV dub of DBZ movie 3, we'll have *four* versions of it... x_X;; (OK, so that one wasn't released on home format that I can tell, but it was originally planned...) Wait...
Was there actually a home-version release of the TV-edit? I don't believe that there was. As noted above, I specifically remember advertisements for the edited TV version of movie 3, but that's because that version was done by FUNimation for the original syndication run of season 2 on TV (it was later re-dubbed in the same joint-FUNimation/Pioneer fashion as movies 1 & 2). I don't think it ever saw the light of day (other than repeat airings on Cartoon Network in North America). Oh dear god, does this ever get confusing... Rewind me to 1997, please, someone. |
