I have some questions about dragonball, not dbz (and I may get flames for this, but I pretty much think dbz sucks. And I've seen both the edited and uncut versions, in both english and with japaneese subs). Okay, here we go.
1. I'd like to start watching dragonball, I read the manga and it's hilarious, but the CN version is pretty severley edited from what I can see. Now, I want to start off watching the series, but last time I checked, funimation had released all the sagas totally uncut on DVD, except the first! WHy? are they releasing the first saga soon, or is it already out and if so where can I get it.
2. I've heard about a movie called Dragonball: Path to Power, which pretty much handles the beggining of the series, and it's uncut. Until the series comes out uncut, this will have to do, but is it any good?

The the only reason why the first sage isn't uncut yet is becasue Trimark still owns the rights to that saga. When will they give it, who knows. Will we see a uncut verison of that once they do, yes. Path to Power is, like others DB movies, smashed down, carved up, retelling of begainning. So will it fill that uncut gap, no.

Path to Power will fill you in on some things from the first "saga", and sometimes it wont (for example, Krillen isn't in it), but also spoils a few things from future episodes. If you've already read the manga then it wont matter much, but Path to Power is actually a very nice movie on it's own, so it wouldn't hurt to watch it in place of DB set 1 (mind you some things from set 2 onwards might not make sense, but thats the risk you take eh)

Path to Power is a retelling of Dragonball from the beginning leading up to the Red Ribbon saga, ending with the defeat of General White. The visuals are cleaned up using the updated style of Dragonball GT. It's alright for a quick Dragonball fix and if your a fan of the Dragonball series in general, it's pretty good to have.

Given their solicitations have gone all the way through to january or somesuch, it's a negative from FUNimation. No one knows when the license becomes unhinged, and no one is saying otherwise.
