Takuhai sounds so much cooler. I guess they didn't have enough people sign up for it.

I dunno. Initially not knowing what Takuhai ment, I always saw those banner ads that were like "Wanna do Takuhai?", and I always kinda thought they were something dirty. =P

Manga Magazine sounds a bit uncreative, but it's a good thing TP is making it available to newstands. I wonder if they will have limited quantities? I keep thinking I won't get issue two because I entered my address wrong or something.

While "Manga Magazine" certainly is uncreative, it's the best possible name, from a branding point of view, for this. People will see it and will instanly know that its manga related.
As opposed to "wtf is Takuhai" -t |

I agree that the title is uncreative. I was really looking forward to seeing it in my mailbox. I guess that won't happen. It was such a waste signing up for it then. Why don't they distibute it to book stores and via mail. Takuhai is still a better title. Why don't they have it Devilery in Japanese. I really liked the Japanese name.

That was my general response, anyway, when all those banners were running on ANN. Especially when such individuals as Koyuki from Beck and Pacifica from Scrapped Princess were asking me if I wanted to "do" it. No, TokyoPop, that didn't sound like a raging double entendre at all. |

They could have made it "Otakuhai." Then they would be making a pun AND have name recognition.
And then they could make a better slogan than that double entendre filled one. And then they could edit their manga better. And... edit: Takuhai is not cool. Its just a word. OMG Japanese is teh cool. |

I like that these are going to be at stores/cons instead of delivered to my home. It's a lot easier to just pick up a catalogue of current titles from the shelf instead of keeping track of where that blasted issue got to two and a half months after you got it.

Cool or not, they can't call it Takuhai anymore because it's no longer exclusively home delivery. And what do you mean "I really liked the Japanese name"? Manga is a Japanese word too.
Anyway, I bet they changed the distribution format after realizing that it would be easier to just dump the things on store shelves and con booths and they'd get less people bitching about why their copy wasn't in the mailbox yet. Or, to get TP's official statement, go here: http://www.tokyopop.com/mangaonline/features.php?viewPage=feat_editor.htm |

They could have still call it Takuhai: Manga Magazine. It would have it's uniquness as well as being letting people know what they're getting.
That makes no sense at all. Having it deliver to your home is really convenient. |

Manga Magazine sounds too generic.
If Tokyopop is looking for a name change, why not call it "Free" Mangazine in Japanese? |

Because people will then ask "WTF is '.....'" Japanese may be cool to certain anime and managa fans, but the average person, even the average fan, doesn't understand it. It's pretty evident what "Manga Magazine is." -t |

I think it's a good move to change the name of their magazine, and I bet it has nothing to do with the fact that it's no longer just a "home delivery" mag.
I mean, no one knew what Takuhai meant. The only people who would have picked up the magazine are those who either went to conventions and picked up those free mags they were handing out, or people who go to enough big anime sites to have seen one of their ads. But, most of their sales don't come from that sliver of people who do the above. Most of their sales are going to come from people poking through Barnes & Noble and seeing, "Oh hey, Manga Magazine, neat." As opposed to, "WTF is Tah-koo---hay....?" You always think that people will pick up something that's "wtf?" just out of curiosity's sake, but market research and experience has shown otherwise. ^^; Of all the magazines that they've ever put out, this is probably the only one with a title obvious enough that the average manga/anime fan would pick up. |
