I wouldn't wish for something like that. Asking the average Japanese speaker to say something in Chinese gives about the same level of results as asking the average English speaker to do the same.

Rie Kugiyama greeted her Taiwanese fans in Chinese using her Shana voice. Romi Park greeted her Korean fans in Korean. There's nothing hard speaking another language with a little training. Furthermore, Kana is lucky since she only does small lines of recording and nothing more. |

That's quite the achievement for someone who already speaks Korean.
And not sound awful? You should test that a bit. |

But did it sound good? And do those voice actors already know how to speak those languages? I'd say a bit of choppiness is acceptable when informally addressing your fans, but if you're not a fluent speaker of the language, even voice training will result in things sounding not quite right. Look at all the anime with English scenes that sound more like "Engrish." The anime "C: Control" comes to mind, with its phrases like "The Caribbean Nation in the Caribbeans" and "I have heard about it, but I do not think anybody has ever heard about it." I'm assuming the same things happen in other languages too when foreigners try to speak them. |

Romi may be Korean descent, but she was born in Japan and thus speaks Japanese. When she speaks her parents native language, she takes several pauses to use the right words in Korean. |

In fact, choosing Hanazawa has indeed stirred some controversies here. Taipei City Mall is known for its otakudom, but despite Hanazawa's huge popularity among anime fans, she is basically unheard of outside the existing anime fandom (even in Japan), hence people question whether the mascot would attract additional customers (either local or overseas) for the mall.
Besides, Hanazawa has never been there or even in Taiwan. If you ask me I'd say Haruna Ikezawa would be the best candidate, as she visits Taiwan alone and personally very often, visiting places that I have never been or even heard of (unlike most Japanese travelers, Ikezawa is fluent in multiple languages so backpacking is a piece of cake for her). On the other hand, I'm sure all Hanazawa's fans would be ecstatic to see her visiting the mall because of this role, though. |
