Speaking of which, I thought at first that the 'skinned alive' thing must be a PETA exaggeration, because why on earth would anyone do it? Surely it'd make the process tougher and be likely to mess up the pelt? After some quick research, though, it seems that it's not entirely uncommon for tanuki, dogs, cats and other animals to be skinned or cooked alive in China. :/

In all likelihood those videos are staged.
It makes ZERO sense to skin a live animal.

But the videos look real, don't they?

Well of course they do. They ARE skinning live animals.
But the bullshit about it is that they aren't doing it
for fur. They are doing it because either 1. to be cruel
2. for money or 3. they are morons. Since 1 and 3 are
self explanatory I'll deal with 2. Here's how it works.

PETA has an agenda. Stop the fur trade.
PETA pays random chinese people to skin live animals.
Chinese people skin live animals.
Peta makes bullshit video claiming they "discovered" this cruelty.
Gullible people see the videos and think it is standard practice
in the fur industry. PETA makes up bullshit reasons for why
skinning live animals makes a superior product.

Which by the way, no it does not.

And here's a little experiment you can do (maybe).
Don't worry I'm not going to tell you to skin a live animal. Instead...

1. Catch a live squirrel with your bare hands
2. Hope you got your rabies shot beforehand

Mrsticky: That's basically what I'd been thinking, and I certainly don't have a lot of trust for PETA. However, apparently Beijing News went out to disprove the claims and ended up getting footage of the same thing. While it still doesn't make sense to me, I'm guessing that it's probably mostly cases where they bash the animal but don't care whether it's dead or just vaguely stunned.
