If your not sure if you want to contribute, vote now, and see where it goes; there will be multiple rounds, and time for cold feet later. Please don't just list works, but give a little bit of feedback. I'll add new shows and current scores as people vote.

I'm going to talk about the choices, then vote at the end.
Tekkonkinkreet Never seen it, basically know nothing about it. Might be supportive of it. Perfect Blue I would like more discussion of this film. See, I thought it had problems, but I've always wondered if maybe I just didn't understand it properly. In-depth discussion would help me determine if my dissatisfaction stems from me not getting it or if the movie is flawed. Paprika No, just no. Unlike Perfect Blue I am confident I know what's what, and that it is not that great (for a variety of reasons). I don't want to sit through it again. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time A wonderful movie. Not sure how much discussion it could engender, but I do like it a lot. Death Note Love this show. I fear it might derail into a morality debate but it does offer a lot to think about. Neon Genesis Evengelion Oh boy, is it December already? Puella Magi Madoka Magica Not yet out on home video but will be soon. Could be good to run it at a later date to let more people get a hold of it. Eve no Jikan Heard great things about it, haven't watched it. Definitely interested. Denpa teki na Kanojo It's a bit short, but that might work in its favour if we want to start small. Looks like something I'd be keen to try out. Kaiba Looks bizarre, but I have heard good things about it, lots of people recommend it. Was going to check it out anyway, so doing so with other people is as good an excuse as any. Bakemonogatari It's a fantastic show, but it's not out on home video. Infinite Ryvius Don't really like it. There is some room for discussion, don't know how much though. Paranoia Agent Oh god, not another Kon work. But hey, maybe I can get a better understanding of it if we run it. Kūchū Buranko This was so bizarre that I never watched it while it was airing. I've kind of regretted my decision, so would be conducive to participating. Cat Soup The ANN description got my attention, and I'm curious to see it. No. 6 Not a great show, and the themes weren't handled all that well which would hurt discussion. I vote for: Tekkonkinkreet Perfect Blue Puella Magi Madoka Magica Eve no Jikan Denpa teki na Kanojo Kaiba Kūchū Buranko Cat Soup Yeah, no Death Note. I'm afraid that it would turn into me arguing against everyone else. Last edited by dtm42 on Thu Jan 19, 2012 5:24 am; edited 1 time in total |

dtm42's format is effective, so I'll replicate that:
Tekkonkinkreet This is a fantastic movie, and I'd love it to get more exposure through something like the book club. However, the animation style isn't for everyone. That's a talking point in itself, actually. Perfect Blue Wow, probably one of the first anime movies I ever saw, it's maybe been a decade since I last watched it? Wouldn't mind revisiting. Paprika Heard a bit about it, never seen it. I've been warned off it by some, and had it recommended by others. Possibly one to polarise opinion. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Really great movie, but beyond discussing time travel in its various forms (a subject I generally abhor), not sure how much mileage we'd get out of it. Death Note Eh, I could stomach a rewatch since the first time around I watched it dubbed and it didn't do anything for me (the dub I mean, not the story). I feel I might have missed out on some good seiyuu performances. But yeah, this one is kind of asking for trouble, looking at how the Bebop thread went recently. When you choose something people feel strongly about, you have to have the flame retardant on standby. Neon Genesis Evengelion See above. Also, my tolerance for Shinji is extremely low. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Me and a bunch of guys from the fansub group I was part of decided to watch this as a book club effort whilst it was airing, heh. I love it dearly and reckon we'd get a goodly amount of feedback about it. Eve no Jikan This is probably a great choice for the first book club in a while, it's a good length, has interesting themes and is well animated. Definitely a strong contender for me. Denpa teki na Kanojo A bit short, but I know this show pretty intimately having done some work on it in the past. Another one I'd like to see get a wider exposure. Kaiba A longstanding favourite of mine. I didn't really 'get' some of it whilst it was airing, would be great to hear other people offer their own take on it. Bakemonogatari As much as I love it, I don't think it would make a good book club choice. I think whilst Nise is still airing, people are already discussing Bake in that thread since the two are intrinsically linked. Infinite Ryvius I already have two scifi shows on the go this season, I'd be reluctant to take on a third. Or have I missed the point entirely? Looks very scifi-ish to me. I don't know enough about it to say one way or the other, really. Paranoia Agent I wouldn't mind at all with this one, maybe it could offer a nice comparison piece to Mirai Nikki, as an example of how to do psychological right. *shrug* Kūchū Buranko This has been in my backlog since it aired, so any choice that helps me reduce said backlog is okay by me! I think a few people would lose interest pretty quickly though. It's a pretty niche style. Cat Soup Never heard of it, looks interesting, why the hell not. No. 6 Missed this because I had loads on that season. it was noitaminA, right? Should provide food for thought of nothing else. Umm, I strongly recommend: Eve no Jikan ...but wouldn't mind: Tekkonkinkreet Perfect Blue Puella Magi Madoka Magica Denpa teki na Kanojo Kaiba Paranoia Agent |

Tekkonkinkreet
I've got this on blu-ray. Great visual style and soundtrack but it plods a bit after a while. Perfect Blue Got this on DVD as well. Uncovering all the tricks and games Satoshi Kon plays with the viewer could be fun. I'm sure there are lots I haven't seen. Paprika Although it's my all-time favourite anime I am aware that those people who don't love it tend to be bored to tears with it. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time I agree that there might not be a lot to talk about. Death Note Too long! I don't know if I could manage it again. Neon Genesis Evengelion NGE is better and makes more sense once you've seen End of Evangelion. It's hard to imagine any decent discussion without spoiling what's coming. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Although I'm maintaining an Aniplex moratorium, I'd make an exception for the book club. If people can assure me there is plenty of scope for discussion I'd be happy to support it. Eve no Jikan Lots of ideas to discuss; 5 x 15 minute episodes and 1 x 30 minute episode; available everywhere on Crunchyroll; it's not a polarising show and appeals to a wide range of people. Ideal way to start the club. Denpa teki na Kanojo Great reviews at The Nihon Review and Them. This would be OK. Kaiba From the guy who gave us The Tatami Galaxy? Definitely. Bakemonogatari Anime vampires don't do it for me. I'm not yet sold on Shinbo as a director and if we're going to do one of his I'd much rather it be PMMM. Infinite Ryvius Sounds good. I'd support it. It might be a bit old for many people's tastes. Paranoia Agent This is the series that killed the previous book club. A couple of people kind of shanghaid it and lectured the others. It seems everyone else just lost interest. Kūchū Buranko Director Kenji Nakamura did C - Control whatever. It'll take a lot to get me enthused about any of his other stuff. Cat Soup Nah. Kaiba before this if we're having Masaaki Yuasa. No. 6 Doesn't seem all that highly regarded. There must be better noitaminA series we could choose. Strongly support: Have seen: Eve no Jikan Have not seen: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Support: Perfect Blue Denpa teki na Kanojo Kaiba Infinite Ryvius |

There's enough on here that I have nothing to say anything about so I won't comment on them all, just the ones I have opinions about:
Paprika The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Both of these I have never seen but am interested in. However, I'm not sure about having a movie as the pick. I unfortunately never participated in the previous book clubs (don't remember why) but I know that they went on for quite some time and I don't think a movie could give you the breadth of conversation ... and I also don't see what difference it would be having a book club topic or just starting a general conversation about either one. Death Note I've seen a little over half of this one and I stopped for a reason so I would not participate if it was chosen. Also, I think this one might be a bit long, since I saw the people supporting movies as a choice say that people tended to start and then not stick with it. As such, I think anything over 26 eps might be stretching it. Neon Genesis Evengelion I have actually never seen this one. But I think most people have. Not sure if they want to re-watch it or not but I'd be down for it. Puella Magi Madoka Magica I've seen this one and actually would love to watch it again. That said, I do see the issues with picking up such a recent title and one that has a decently expensive release. So it's probably not my top choice. Eve no Jikan I've heard of this one and tried to look into it. I know it's up on Crunchyroll but my internet honestly is not reliable enough for streaming. And I've had no luck getting it through other means either. So while I think it's a good choice, I might not be able to participate if it's chosen. Paranoia Agent I think this would be my top choice because I already have it at my disposal, it's not very long, and I know it has a lot going on in it because it's Satoshi Kon. It looks pretty much perfect for something like this. No. 6 I haven't heard anything good about this series so that would be a definite no from me for it. So, after all that, the titles I support are: - Paranoia Agent - Puella Magi Madoka Magica - Eve no Jikan - Neon Genesis Evengelion For the ones I haven't really heard much about, I'm not against them, I just don't have anything to add to the discussion though if I hear good things about them I may throw a vote in later in their support. |

I assure you that C - Control is Nakamura's weakest series. It was a real let-down for the fans of his previous works, especially Mononoke, which is nothing short of masterpiece. |

If my internet can handle it, then I definitely would like to watch
Eve no jiken. With that said, If you want use a movie why don't we watch and discuss the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya? There seems like plenty to discuss regarding that series. So, my votes are for: Eve no jiken The disappearance of haruhi suzumiya neon genesis evangelion |

Let's see...
I like Tekkonkinkreet a lot, but it's probably inferior to its source manga. Perfect Blue is supposedly great. Heard good things about Denpa teki na Kanojo, too. Kaiba is heartwrenching. Infinite Ryvius is an underrated classic. Heard some good things about Kuchu Buranko but Mononoke is probably superior. Maybe for next book club? Evangelion and Death Note are both great shows (although the former probably has more meat to it) but they've also been discussed to death so I don't think they're a great fit as of yet. So I think I'll vote for Perfect Blue, Denpa teki na Kanojo, Kaiba and Infinite Ryvius. Personal vote goes for Infinite Ryvius though. Heartwrenching, terrifying stuff. Saw it over Christmas break and was really impressed. |

Anime that I've seen: Paprika, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, most of No. 6
I would definetly go for starting with either Tekkonkinkreet or Perfect Blue. When it comes to series I vote for Bakemonogatari or Kaiba But really I'm on board for whatever gets chosen.
And now you've got me interested in this. I've never heard of it. |

Just updated the standings. Thanks for showing interest guys!
I really like dtm42's format; try to use it from now on, but don't feel like you need to comment on every candidate if you have nothing to add. I'll be pretty busy this weekend (Marine stuff), but should be able to regularly update as new votes come in. I like the format where once 24 hours goes by without any new votes, we eliminate all but the top 3 (?); but if anyone has suggestions, I'm open to them. [Edit] I just want to make it clear that I will not be voting. That doesn't seem "fair." |

Tekkonkinkreet Never seen, kinda heard of it. sounds interesting, but Im with marie-antoinette in that I don't think we should do a movie. It wouldn't be much different then just starting a regular discussion thread. Perfect Blue Now this is an interesting movie. We certainly wouldn't run out of things to talk about here. Paprika Eh..... Saw it, probably plenty to talk about but I was underwhelmed. I would still participate tho. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time As most have already said, a wonderful movie but not much discussion would be generated. Death Note Almost everyone has already seen this, and it is on the long side. Neon Genesis Evengelion Let's not go here. Puella Magi Madoka Magica I haven't seen this yet, but I am ravenous to do a book club on it. That being said, we probably shouldn't start out with it. Maybe decide that this should be our second book club title. Eve no Jikan This is tied for the most promising in my mind atm. It is short, highly rated, plenty to discuss, and would guarantee quite a few participants. Denpa teki na Kanojo Not sure if we would split this up since it only has 2 eps, but this would be a good choice. Kaiba This is the other title that I think is tied for most promising. Tons to discuss, surreal and touching. This would be a little ambitious to open with (cause some might be scared away by how mind-bending it can be), but those who stick with it won't be disappointed. Bakemonogatari We'd have a fair amount to discuss, a lot of it coming from the animation style and the signature long dialogues. Infinite Ryvius This was one of the first anime I ever saw and I haven't rewatched it, so I'd love to see it again through a new lens with other people to share ideas with. It would provide interesting discussion and has a premise that is pretty original among anime, tho it is a full 26 episodes long and its age might make it not as easily attainable. Paranoia Agent I thought this would be a good idea until someone said this title killed the last book club.... O_o I may be a little paranoid but in that case maybe we should stay away from it. Kūchū Buranko There would be no lack of discussion here. My only concern is that it is REALLY bizarre (as dtm42 said), and since I haven't seen it I can't back it up with any reassurance. Cat Soup Excellent, excellent, excellent. I love this OVA. It is only 1 ep long, but out of all the titles suggested it holds its own against the top contenders for potential discussion generation. It is very surreal and can be difficult to understand, but one of the pluses of it being short is you can watch it again easily and gain new insight. It is only 1 ep afterall tho, so maybe not for a book club =( No. 6 Haven't seen it and haven't heard good things. Strongly support: Perfect Blue Eve no Jikan Kaiba Also voting for: Tekkonkinkreet Denpa teki na Kanojo Infinite Ryvius Kuchu Buranko Cat Soup |

Man, yeaterday I thought people were just beating a dead horse. Now 24 hours later ANN Book Club is back? How'd I miss this?
Tekkonkinkreet: Like dtm42, I've never seen it. Could be interesting. Perfect Blue: This could open up some good discussion. Paprika: Wouldn't mind it, if only to see what people have to say. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: Been interested in this for a while. would give me (another) reason to pick it up. Death Note: Love it, and at least the first half would make great discussion. However, these threads have had a problem of dwindling participation towards the end of a series and I feel like this show would be a set-up for more of the same. Neon Genesis Evengelion: Would love it. The only question: would we restrict it to the series only, or would we throw in End of Eva and/or the Rebuild movies? Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Are we not allowing "alternative" viewing methods? If so, this one may be hard to do right now. Would love to do it though, as it would be a lively discussion of a show with a lot of interest. Eve no Jikan: The show seems made for a thread like this. Denpa teki na Kanojo: Interesting theme, decently rated, why not? Kaiba: Hmm. Could be interesting. Bakemonogatari: Same argument as Madoka. Infinite Ryvius: Some post-apocalyptic space drama? Why not? Paranoia Agent: Would have no problem with this, except it has been done before (and that was one of the ones that died halfway through). Kūchū Buranko: Oh, I've heard of this one. It would be good for this thread. Cat Soup: That description has me curious. No. 6: Don't know much about this. Would be willing to watch. I vote for: Top Three: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Perfect Blue Eve no Jikan Neon Genesis Evangelion Paranoia Agent Tekkonkinkreet Infinite Ryuvius Denpa teki na Kanojo Kaiba Kūchū Buranko Cat Soup Yeah, I'm no help ![]() Tokyo Godfathers seems pretty straight-forward, but how do people feel about Millenium Actress? |

Kūchū Buranko
I prefer Mononoke, but Kūchū Buranko is fine. It should spark interesting discussion. Kaiba It has some very good episodes. The ending could have been better, but it's still one of the best series that appeared in the last five years. Death Note I cannot see any potential for interesting discussion. Death Note is entertaining, but it's not a cerebral series by any stretch of the imagination. At best it only scratches the surface of complex problems. It doesn't do anything beyond that. My suggestion: Angel's Egg This movie can give any cerebral series a run for its money. Besides, the art is gorgeous. I'm voting for: Kūchū Buranko Kaiba Paranoia Agent Infinite Ryvius |

Also, just to make sure we're not discouraging participation, anyone who wants to vote can vote here, and even if you don't vote, you can still participate in and follow whatever series/movie/OVA is chosen. You don't have to write comments on every nominated title, in fact you don't have to comment at all, you can vote without explanation. Though I greatly encourage an explanation so others can see where you're coming from. I know in the tournaments a lot of people abstained from voting because of the required justification, but no worries about that here, at least in the first round. I think that when we are voting between the final 3 we should be required to have some sort of comment on why, even if it's just a single sentence. |

Updated the standings. To those of you wondering how this will be different from a general discussion thread, there are a few big ones I'd like to point out. First, by agreeing to participate, we are agreeing to a few things that commenting in a general discussion thread do not involve; a)that we will watch the show that is selected at the same pace, b) that we will engage in deeper discussion of the show, beyond the usual "x is my favorite character" or "the scene where y happened was so cool," and c) Take this with a grain of salt, but I'm a English teacher by Trade. It's my life's work to encourage others to look closer at the media they consume.
