It got a very abrupt ending. I think there should at least have been a chapter set years later where the fates of the various characters were revealed.
Also, is it just me or was Hikaru constantly losing? I mean, sure, every time he lost he was recognized as being skillful and told that he was going to be an important person in the world of Go, but...even at the end, he never succeeded. I thought that was pretty pathetic...ending the manga and never allowing the main character to win anything substantial. I was disappointed.

How did it end? Was it about the same as the anime? It doesn't seem to be, from what you say...

Well, there's a big tournament between the best young players in China, Korea, and Japan. In the last match...I think it was against China...Hikaru is put in the First position, Akira is Second, and the other guy is Third. They end up losing all three games, and Japan loses the tournament horribly. Then it ends.
Pathetic, really.

That IS very different. In the anime, I think --I can't remember it clearly, having seen it a long time ago-- it ends when Hikaru is about to play his first official game as a pro, and he starts to adapt a fan for his image, just like Sai. Oh, and Sai disappeared already.
Perhaps it is more pleasant to watch the anime. I thought it was a bit sad though.

I didn't understand the very end, especially the last page of the story. Who was saying "can you hear my voice?" Was it Sai?

I believe it was Hikaru who was saying that, but I could be wrong.

I thought about that possibility too, but why would Hikaru say that?

Perhaps he was talking to Sai...but it's been a while since I've read the ending, so I could be mistaken.
