I am currently still in Japan(been here for 1.5 months). But thats not important.

In that time frame, I have checked out many bookstores, both new-seller and used. Now, I am sure this is no surprise, but the manga collection in every single bookstore that I have been to is ridiculously large. Best example is today(I am now traveling and am now in Tokyo) when I visited a 7-floor bookstore in Shinjuku, 2 of which are filled with nothing but manga.

Now, the titles that are brought to America, or any other nation for that matter, are top quality most of the time. That being said, I have been buying a few left and right, and they have been great as well. I checked out some romance/drama, romance/comedy, action/drama, Nausicaa(this thing belongs in its own category), etc.

I would like to start a discussion and manga selection. I know it is impossible to locate every single series of manga, but yet so many good series, and a few great ones are being left untouched. This is basically a pointless discussion about how we could expend our library :p(other than the option of learning Japanese).

Keep in mind that there are stores devoted to nothing but manga, and they aren't small specialty stores either. I've got a DVD featuring a tour of four of them, and they look bigger than most bookstores in the US.
It's impossible for every title to get licenced in the US, or even become scanslated (not at this time at least). It's pretty much a given that all most of the mega popular shonen titles are going to become recognised by the US fanbase, even if they aren't published here. Right now it's hard to find alot of good seinen (manga for men) titles in the US, published or scanslated, and even harder for josei (manga for women) titles. I find that one of the best sources of good titles (no matter what age range) is the Media Arts Festival, which has a catigory for manga. The award recipients are usually a good mix of typical manga and stuff that's a bit out of the ordinary, and just about every title I've read that has been included in the awards has been exellent. They have an english website where you can see the diffrent winners over the years, as well as the various nominees for the past two years (http://plaza.bunka.go.jp/english/festival/sakuhin/index.html scroll down to the bottom).

That's what I always tell Western (American in particular) manga readers: those imported manga may be popular, but there are tons of better (but not as popular) titles.

Ryokoalways, will you be available at 2005 6th comic exhibition in Taipei?
