one question, in the August 03 Animerica they say that Twelve Kingdoms goes on for 96 episodes, but here you say that it is over at episode 45. Does anyone know why?

I've heard that the series was cut shorter than it was planned to be, and lost a good chunk of plot. :(

Much like its predecessor Escaflowne, originally intended for 36 episodes. Freaky.

Check the review again. I do make some comments on that.

I was really dissapointed when I heard this series came to an end. "Twelve Kingdoms" is one of my all-time favorite anime. It has one of the tightest plots, and an incredibly immersive fantasy setting.

A real shame too. I just finished watching the last episode tonight. I love Fuyumi Ono's storytelling style. I can't believe they didn't go any further from here.

That explains my feelings of sorrow when episode 45 ended. While end-of-series remorse is not unusual for me, it was particularly bad in this case, because there was just so much more I wanted to see.
I could easily go for another 51 episodes -- or more.
Still, I'm grateful for the privilege of having seen the 45 episodes I did, because shows of such quality, caliber and ambition are few and far between.
