Here is the abstract of this Nature article:
The full name of Pokemon is POK erythroid myeloid ontogenic factor. Apparently the first author, Dr. Takahiro Maeda, MD, PhD, is an anime lover and has a great sense of humor. PM me if you want to learn further about Pokemon's mechanism. By the way, this Pokemon protein has nothing to do with photosensitive epilepsy caused by episode 38. I never imagine to have a chance discussing about those topics at ANN.

The Admin of ANN should have shown a little more caution when posting about this one. You would think that a site as professional as ANN would have shown more common sense than trying to be funny about a disease that isn't funny.
More to the fact ... blasting a dedicated anime show that continues to be popular among its fans when the disease has NOTHING to do with the anime is also a lack of responsibility on the part of ANN. I'm very disappointed. |

Due to the nature of your response I'm guessing either you have no sense of humor or you've had a close personal experience with cancer, probably recently. If it's the former case, then lighten up a little--although you're absolutely correct in stating that this article has nothing to do with anime, it is still something that many fans would find enjoyable and humorous in an ironic sense. Most of the Pokemon fans who frequent this site enjoy the series as a guilty pleasure, like a tub of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream or a large slab of chocolate or a bag of popcorn when you're at the movies. I don't think I know of anyone personally who would take offense at this article or find it as degrading towards the series. In fact, it demonstrates the growing popularity of anime more than anything else. If the latter case is true--if you're dealing with/have recently dealt with cancer--well, I summon as much sympathy as a complete stranger over the internet possibly can. If I knew you personally I'd probably give you a big hug and offer you a shoulder to cry on. However, I don't, so instead of relying on the collective sympathies of complete strangers, you should talk to one of your friends--someone who at least knows what's going on in your life and is willing to help you and be there for you. |

While I do think that this is funny I don't think that Nintendo might not be to happy to see one of it's most popular licenses being associated with cancer. I wouldn't blame them if they did.

Sonic hedgehog, a member of a family of putative signaling molecules, is implicated in the regulation of CNS polarity. Cell. 1993 Dec 31;75(7):1417-30). Recent investigations also have shown its relationships with pancreatic cancer (Cengel KA. Targeting Sonic Hedgehog: a new way to mow down pancreatic cancer? Cancer Biol Ther. 2004 Feb;3(2):165-6). Never heard SEGA complained. 
Another good example is small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO). You can see comical sumo wrestler figures everywhere in SUMO-related conferences. Neither did Nihon Sumo Kyokai (日本相撲協会) complained. Colonel Wolfe, I personally admire Dr. Maeda's sense of humor. If his nomenclature hurts your feelings, please contact him or his boss directly.
