As I said on the DaizenshuuEX and Funimation boards:
I'm against this. As much as I enjoy some of the core cast of Ocean voices for DBZ characters (Brian Drummond, Scott McNeil, Saffron Henderson), I don't see the necessity of making another English dub for Dragon Ball Kai. Funimation's dub is accurate script wise, and has the strongest performances these VAs have had in these roles. By all means, the Kai dub is a decent dub. Maybe not amazing, but decent, and probably as good as we're going to get. All this is going to do is divide an already divided fanbase even more. Not to mention, if Ocean is going to use an alternative soundtrack, it's going to be insulting. Replacement music is a primitive practice in anime licensing/dubbing and should be a thing of the past. Funimation's phased out their replacement score, Ocean shouldn't continue the practice for Kai. I'm not as big a fan of the Yamamoto score as I am of the Kikuchi score, but that's the score intended for Kai by Toei, so that's the music that should be used. The only light in the darkness here is that Kirby Morrow will not be returning as Goku. He's one of my favorite VAs, but his Goku isn't very good. Another piece of good news is that Morrow said in his audition they wanted him to "kid up" Goku, which means they actually have a grip on the character. |

Wait, so what's Funimations involvement in all of this? If Funi has exclusive rights for R1, I find it strange they'd allow something like this.

I'm for this. I just can't get over how bad Vegeta and Piccolo sound in the FUNimation dubs. I need Brian Drummond and Scott McNeil to enjoy these characters to the fullest.

I never stop being amused in seeing the portion of the DBZ fanbase that's totally into the Ocean Studios dub and hates FUNimation merely for existing and making another dub on their own. Both dubs are terrible, though. Kai is a huge improvement and this is totally unnecessary.

I'm "for it" but I probably am not interested in it personally. I like the Funi dub as I did for the previous series.
But, since I'm not a big fan of copyright, I tend to think of one of the advantages of it's abolition is seeing more variety and one of those things that's always intrigued me is the concept of having multiple dubs (or multiple sound tracks in general, I preferred the Falconer music from DBZ's original dub to Kai's music) I don't think it'll occur often though if it's not marketable, and I think in most cases it probably isn't. Here it might be. |

And recording is underway and it seems that we might be a new Goku.

This is correct. Ocean had some great voices (Vegeta, and Piccolo), but overall the quality was still bad even by the standards of the time. The music in particular was taken from the Megaman cartoon. The scripts they used where the exact same as Funimation only changing the occasional word. Ocean also appears to have been phoning in their anime dubs for years. Funimation has improved leaps and bounds to the point where they no longer resemble the company they once where, while Ocean really hasn't changed much. |

Man, dub acting tastes must be the exact opposite of conventional acting tastes. Toss out some unknowns and let them ham it up in a dub and watch for unwarranted praise. Take the very same show putting in actors that act professionally and it gets bashed.

Hmm, to me it simply seems to be unnecessary. I can't imagine the sheer economics of such a thing are practical. I would assume it would just be a waste of money, since the series has so many releases as it is.

I wonder if Funi struck some kind of deal where they let Ocean dub Kai, and in return they get discounted prices for Black Lagoon and Shana dubs. Although, I can't imagine what they're going to do with the Ocean dub, unless Canada doesn't get Nicktoons and some TV station wants to air Kai and wants Ocean's actors, but that sounds way too far fetched.

I've been waiting to hear just about anything about this, but I haven't really at all. Is there any confirmed distribution method? I can't imagine they would sell this dubbing on DVD in the United States, for instance.

I wonder how many Ociean dub fans would actually import the DVDs from Canada if they made them.

Would that actually be legal though, or would they be marked for Canadian sale only?
