I feel like I'm swimming in DVD cases. I've moved the discs themselves to binders but am too OCD to part with the cases. For those that do throw out some/all of the cases, do you keep specific ones? Just toss all of them? Maybe just the "anime legend" type cases that aren't likely to be collectible anyways?

I keep everything intact. For me, keeping everything in it's original packaging (unless a case is damaged) is a must. I can see the benefit of putting dvd's into binders in terms of saving space, but I don't think I can ever bring myself to do that. lol

I agree. I would love to bind the whole lot up as I'm running out of space but I just can't part the discs with the cases. They look so smart all lined up neatly.
I wish Toradora! had come with a dvd case in the huge box though. It sticks out like a sore thumb but there is no way on earth I could part with it. |

I've been thinking about how to store them efficiently myself. Here's one I had idea for fold-out "accordion" shelves, for the things I want to preserve in the original cases.
I think the ultimately best way to store it, though, is to extra the data from the DVD, throw out the original physical stuff, disk and all, and back it up on multiple hard-drives. But there'll still be a lot of my absolute favorites, for which I can't let go of the original packaging. |

I keep the dvd's in the cases. I haven't run into any space related issues yet but it shouldn't be too long before I do. But still, I don't think I could ever get myself to just throw them away or something. I'm not sure, I just like to have the dvd in it's own case where it's safe and sound. If I don't have the case with the dvd, it feels like the value just heavily dropped and it's not worth as much as it would have been with the case, and that bugs me.

Let me expand a little on my initial question.
If you don't throw them away, is it because you consider them collectible and only the complete package has value? Or is it just personal preference and you have no interest in possible resale? The other idea I've been considering is just keeping the DVD box art and tossing the cases. That way I'm just losing plastic that I can replace. Has anyone gone that route? |

Yes, part of the reason I buy is to collect the shows I love and interest me on top of the re-watchability. It's not often that I blind buy unless a show is highly regarded, so almost all the shows I own I have some sort of attachment to. As with any collection, I feel it is important to keep it as close to the original packaging as possible, but not really for resale purposes, so you can say it's personal preference. If you get rid of the cases, you run the risk of damaging the box art since you will be leaving them hollow....susceptible to crushing and wrinkling. The same is true for the cover art. My OCD would go nuts with the likely hood of something happening. However, if you don't care about that, you can go that route I suppose. |

I keep DVDs in their cases because I like the way a shelf full of DVDs looks. Binders certainly take up less space, but are far less attractive in my opinion. That and even if I did use binders, I couldn't bring myself to throw the cases away so I might as well not bother. I also like the collectable aspect of keeping them in their cases.

WARNING: The following instructions by PetrifiedJello may cause fainting. You have been warned.
When I get a new shipment in, this is what I do: -Open the precious and remove all the disks. -Remove DVD inserts on singles. All others are ignored. -Transfer disks to doubled-sided thin pack. -Singles inserts are cut 3mm on each side to fit into their new home. -The remaining items, including box, cases, booklets, and other "waste of space" items are tossed into the garbage. And even this method takes up considerable space. 200 individual collections are a bitch to store. I can't imagine where I'd put these if I didn't shave down the size. Note: sometimes this method will actually increase space usage, especially with those bullshit bailey boxes (where 2 disks are stored on those flip trays), stack packs, or any other "let's cram as many disks into this space while disregarding their ability to scratch so we can piss off the few remaining customers we do have" methods. |

My colection hasn not yet reached the point that I am quite out of space, and I like how it looks so it is all in its original. *looks at colection* The colector boxes look like a treate and it feels nice to see that I have colected what I have. I think of the cases as part of the package, some look especialy nice, the feeling of opening a case to get your series.
Though looking at what space I have left, I will probably have clear the bottom shelf of my pokemon game guide to move my non-anime down a shelf to make room. Will probably also have to find a new place for my Shinigami king figure also as that is takeing up room with two cases already stacked horizontly. Actually my Manga space is running out too, I might have to find a new storage space of my game guides, sci-fi/fantsy novels, and mythology books to make room to expand. I supose I could supose I could then use that space for anime as well. Actually I probabl need new shelves. @ PetrifiedJello I did not think your warning was serious, but yes it was kind of terifying. |

It was more for The King of Harts, who dislikes it when people clean house like this. Not saying he'd faint, but who knows. ![]() However, it's all truth. If I didn't downsize, I wouldn't own this many titles. In fact, I'm thinking of getting rid of many of them because I know myself to know I'll not re-watch most of them. However, selling "disk only" is hard, so I may just transfer them to a DVD wallet. Time will tell when I actually care. |

I keep them in the original cases and shelve them for a number of reasons. 1. I don't trust binders. I've had some that scratched my CDs and I've never had any cases that did that 2. It's easier to tell cases apart than it is to tell individual discs apart. A lot of series discs look alike to me. Also some of them are those double sided abominations that have tiny labels I can't read. 3. Because, visually, leaving them in cases looks far more awesome. 4. Getting rid of the cases would ruin it's resale value if you decided you didn't want it or you fell on hard times and needed to sell it. If I ever need more space I just find things I don't watch anymore and sell them. or I buy a more compact version than what I have and sell the one that takes up more space. I haven't run into this problem as of yet- my entire entertainment setup was carefully planned to maximize disc storage space. I have well over 1,000 at this about 1/3 of my shelf space open. Considering most anime has switched to smaller packaging these days, It means I kinda-sorta have double the space left I'd planned for when I set this up.
I have given some thought to cutting down some of my cases- y'know, planning ahead again- I figure step one is to condense the real big space eaters (like the 12 Orphen singles) into some of these new cases that hold up to 6 discs in a standard DVD case without resorting to stakpaking. I'd put 1 insert into the case to identify the series, then put the remaining papers into one of those plastic accordion files you get at office stores. That way, I could easily reassemble the set by replacing the cases. I'd actually cut back a fair bit of space that way. As for artboxes and series in non-standard cases... I'll be honest. I'd sooner replace old sets with new skinny re-releases or just purge titles altogether than alter a set in a way I can't undo. This is less about preserving value and more about being genuinely concerned about what happens to my dvds when they leave my possession. An intact set is more likely to go to another collector who'll care for it. Don't ask me why that's important, I suppose I'm just weird like that. |
