Since we've moved into our new house, I've switched TVs with my parents since they don't really use it in their bedroom. I did this because their's is bigger and because my old one used to give off those magnetic discolorations on the screen depending on what I was watching. I found it highly irritating especially when watching anime.

However, even though this TV is absent of these distortions, there now appears to be a permanent discoloration in the top left corner of the screen (about an inch or so from the border).

Would there be anyone here who happens to know a way to get rid of these spots?

The discolorations come from the magnets that got jumbled around inside the tv. There is a method to fix these decolorations called degaussing (or demagnetizing), but I think it has to be done shortly after the damage occurs to be completely rid of it.

TVs are dangerous to work on if you don't know what you're doing, so it'd be best to just take it to a tv repair man and tell him to fix it.

I think the newer, expensive TVs have a degauss feature right in the menu. (my computer monitor does)

you have two options...

1. take it to a repair guy.
2. buy a new tv.

im pretty sure, depending on the model, that its the Cathode Ray Tube the is screwed up in the tv that makes that happen.

but there is no cathode ray tube in plasma tvs so if thats what you have; i have no idea what to do other that the two options listed above.

One reason your TV could get screwed up like that is if you have a magnet or something else near it that creates a magnetic field. Like a stereo on top your TV will do it, I've had personal expierence with that lately, though the discoloration went away after I turned it off for a while. Magnets and speakers can also turn video tapes into scrap as well, erasing them.

Yeah, the top-right corner of my middle-aged Sony Trinitron has an area where reds turn slightly green, especially noticable when I'm watching something with a lot of red and pink like Utena, but I've looked into fixing it myself with a magnet and decided that the cure is worse than the disease. I'm not going to risk doing further damage because of something I don't notice 99% of the time.

Yeah, that's exactly what I have. Guess I'll just leave it then. Thank you all for the tips.

All domestic teles have a degaussing coil already built in and is activated every time the set is switched on from a power off situation. If a set is just left on "standby" this is not powered off as the powersuppy is still being fed. If said set is used this way for a long time a static charge can build up on the tube like a magnetic source and cause colour distortion on some units depending on; 1) age of tube, and 2) grade quality of the same tube. This is known as "purity error". However, if the problem is in the same area on both sets you had in your room, I would presume there is in fact a strong magnetic source too close to the set. like an audio speaker, or some other object that has a magnetic field to it. Try switching the set off and on again at the power switch 2, or 3 times. to activate the degaussing coil. One should hear a brief buzz, or hum, at the initial power serge. As tubes age they do start to show picture quality distortion and corruption. This is known as "tube softness". Hope this is useful.

My experience with such a thing is this: Sometimes if you wait long enough, the discoloration goes away. At least that’s what seems to have happened with my parents TV that I stuck a magnet to..... Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

I'm not sure if the problem has anything to do with speakers being near it. The discoloration itself was never even present before we moved, and I know I didn't put it next to anything magnetic in the moving truck. When we settled in and finally setup the TV in my game room, I turned it on and it was like that from the beginning. I now have my front left, center, and front right surround speakers next to the the TV, and there was no change in putting them closer or moving them away.

My old TV seemed to discolor only when I watch certain shows. If there was a particular color that stayed on screen for too long, a magnetic distortion would gradually appear and discolor the screen until I changed the channel to something else or when the color on the screen was gone.

However, I think this only happend when there were colors of an orange or red hue, like fire for instance. But the strange thing is that when I sometimes watch DVDs that have the same elements, the screen does absolutely nothing and is perfect throughout the entire viewing.

It isn't that big of a deal on my new TV since it's such a small corner, but thank you all again.
