It takes place through a Christmas Eve night into Christmas morning. Definitely appropriate and recommended (though perhaps not for younger kids, as it deals with mature themes).

For a series, Haibane Renmei might be a good choice. A significant part of the end of the series takes place around and during what seems to be the Haibane's equivalent of New Year's Eve/Day, with some beautiful winter imagery, so it might hit the spot during the week between Christmas and New Year's when there's traditionally not much to watch on TV.

Well, I'm not sure of any anime that was specifically themed around the christmas holiday, but lots of anime have Christmas specials or episodes where the characters celebrate the holiday. Vandread or as AnimeFreak08 said Love Hina are good examples of this concept.

I haven't seen it, but doesn't Popotan's storyline have something to do with a Christmas tree?

There was this one OVA, some girl dresses up in a Santa suit pops out of a guy's TV to grant his every wish for Christmas...can't remember the name...
Anyway, I don't see why the Japanese make Christmas specials at all, especially since about, what, 3% of the entire population is christian.

Well, the Japanese are practical - when they see something they like, they don't hesitate to appropriate it for their own use.

In the case of Western rituals, the Japanese have adopted

* Valentine's Day, which in Japan is solely an occasion for women to give gifts of chocolate to men - both their sweethearts, and male relations and coworkers (giri-choco, "obligation chocolate"). This is followed by White Day, a wholly Japanese invention, exactly one month later (March 14), where the men reciprocate.

* Christmas, which in Japan is stripped of many of its Christian trappings and concentrates on gift-giving and togetherness (with your loved ones). Mythical figures of non-Christian nature, such as Santa Claus, have been kept, but the Christian angle is nearly gone.

* Weddings, where Western-style wedding chapels are often used in Japanese matrimonial ceremonies. It is not uncommon for two ceremonies (one traditional and one Western) to be held - the Japanese love a good ritual.

* Honeymoon, which wasn't originally used in Japan, has become popular among younger Japanese newlyweds. I'm told that favourite spots are Hawaii and Australia.

This is not a complete list, but it will give you an idea of the mechanisms involved. Basically, if a Western custom gets a lot of exposure (e.g. through TV and movies), it will sooner or later make its way into Japanese culture (in a suitably altered form).

I should mention that the Japanese are not the only culture to adopt foreign rituals.

My own native Denmark has, during the past decade, adopted Halloween (complete with Jack o' lantern figures carved from pumpkins), which was never before part of our cultural heritage - we've adopted the American version of the holiday, probably as the result of influence from TV and films. Valentine's Day, too, has recently found its way into Danish culture, albeit with less success. Before that, Mother's Day and (to a lesser extent, sadly) Father's Day were adopted from America.

Of course, many of the trappings of Christmas in Denmark are not native, either - the Christmas Tree was adopted in the mid-19th century, from Germany (which originated the custom, I believe). The St. Lucia Parade (a hangover from pagan solstice rituals) has been adopted from Sweden.

Yeah, actually it never came to me that there aren't that many Christians in Japan and it would seem weird to make a Christmas anime. I guess it's because it seems like they'd make something like that anyway.
But we all learn something everyday. Razz (I think.)

P.S. - This was for our Anime Club Christmas party, so thanks everyone. Wink
