What does your family and/or loved ones think of anime?

I have seriously given up trying to watch anime infront of my family.
The commentary drives me insane sometimes. I don't mind other people's opinions but if its going to be the same comments ALL the time then I seriously give up. Here's some examples of my experience

-Dragonball Z
I couldn't watch this without my family going "ooerr whats up with them standing there and doing nothing all time time and just staring" on a fair point when I watched it again years later I got irritated by the animation aswell.

-Akira
Always got comments about how slow it is even though my bro watched it from the middle and left during the middle. I had to switch off anyway I got fed up, no one ever gave this a chance from start to end.

Spirited Away
"Are you watching this JUST because it's japanese?"
Worst question I have ever been asked. I watched it because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. At this point (I was like at least in my early teens when watchign this) I haven't seen much anime. So they got it into my heads I'm obsessed.

I love movies alot be it anime or western. I don't just watch anime for the sake of it I watch it because I want to give things a chance like I do live action. I think they believe "all anime is the same". Well I can't blame them due to what's been broadcasted in the UK.
I think they just assume that I buy anime for the sake of, I'm very picky over anime and I think I subject myself to more live action most of the time.

There's no point at all even trying to convince them to watch The Girl Who Leapt through time because someone (my bro) will be like its slow or something, not realising what not all anime is just cartoons with explosions every 5 minutes. It's like no one appreciates any character development anymore. I'd rant more but I feel bad for even talking about my family like this but seriously, he only watches smallville and superman, and mainly action. Everything that hardly has action but mainly character driven he deems boring and doesn't give it a chance. Recently I've been movies of any particular type I've never seen because tbh I love hearing different stories and making a full judgement when it's finished.

I've been wanting to vent this out for a very long time now. I told my mum and she said I shoudln't care what other people think. But really I think I'm just gonna make life easier for myself and not bother. It's like I have no one to talk to about anime. I do have a couple of friends who like anime where I live but I rarely see them and tbh our tastes are different. I never do this when they watch their films, I criticise after it's done and usually I have nothing that bad to say because if the movie's goofy I just don't take it seriously.

Finally...

The Dragonball Z Episode that Ruined it all.
There was one episode of DBZ where there was this black guy in one of the fighting tournaments. He was drawn very badly, with verrrrry dark brown skin and big pink lips, yeah it's a very bad image (I'm not going on about Mr.Popo, this guy was s'posed to be black he had the voice and everything) but now they assume ALL japanese artists draw black people like that.

Don't they? Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I guess I'm really one of the lucky ones, as a lot of my family has no problem at all.

Little Brother: Actually somewhat of a fan. When we were young, we used to watch DBZ all the time. He's pretty young, though, so I'm sure to keep him away from watching most of anything that's not on TV, though. Aside from DBZ, he loves a lot of Miyazaki's movies, some toyetic anime(like Yu-Gi-Oh), and a couple of others. His favorite series, though, is Peacemaker Kurogane,(also one of my faves) which I introduced him to when it was coming on Anime Network on Demand a while back. He often watched Naruto on naruto.com, but I think he grew tired of the fillers and gave up on it.

Mom: Guess I'm really one of the lucky ones when it comes to moms, because mine really doesn't have any problem with anime at all. Hell, there are even ones she's really liked. She used to watch DBZ with us when we were kids, watches an episode or 2 of DBZ Kai in a while, and has a backlog of record Naruto: Shippuden episodes on our DVR she's been meaning to get to. Outside of those generic big-name shounen, she's watched some of and seems to like Xam'd: Lost Memories(our TV's Anime Network on Demand Channel again). I tell that she can actually watch the whole thing once I get the BDs. xD.

She's also seen a number of Miyazaki movies. Finally, she's seen me watch some of the series I have on DVD, and has been pretty interested in some of them, especially Baccano! and Red Garden, both of which I own and both of which are 2 of my favorites.

Dad: Doesn't really give a damn. Laughing

2nd Oldest Sister: Watches anime every now and again. Like my mom and bro, she's seen a lot of Miyazaki movies, and absolutely loves Princess Mononoke(which I own, and is my favorite anime). Likes Naruto, too. Has branched off to some other, more obscure ones, too: watched Now and Then, Here and There in its entirety on Netflix after I showed her my DVD. She actually really liked it, but wasn't fond of the ending much spoiler[because she thinks hella too many people died. Also, Nabuca's actions at the end of episode 12 turned from a "He's my favorite character!" to a "Screw you, Nabuca. >.>"] Another series she watched on Netflix that she seriously loved, unshockingly, was Ouran High School Host Club.

Oldest Sister: Like popz, doesn't give a damn. Laughing

Older Half-Sister: Big Miyazaki fan, Princess Mononoke being her favorite animated film ever. Started watching my Baccano! DVDs and seems to really like it, and has often watched anime via Netflix on her own account.

So, yeah. Guess I got lucky. Laughing

Otomo? Gah who cares, I think you have a point. Ultimate Teacher (ecchi/comedy) which is pretty old did do it right.

My sister doesn't mind at all tbh,she loved Spirited Away despite not being an anime fan. My bro Didn't mind Street Fighter II and Devilman much infact he did love SF II....

I think my mum's slightly relaxed but I think thats because I did tell her how I genuinely felt. I'm not forcing anyone to like it, but I think it does get uncomfortable with running commentary (and unfair since I never do that unless we've seen a film over and over again then no one cares much)

Exactly the same reasons why I started to post on anime forums. Talking about anime in real life is much more enjoyable, but there is only so much you can do about it.

It has never been appreciated. Most people have no idea what you mean if you go talking to them about character development. It's just not as common of a term as the web forums make you believe.

Hey, man, that's an over-exaggeration. There are obviously plenty of people out there who recognize and appreciate well-executed character development in their shows. It's just not a normal topic of discussion because so much anime out there lacks it. Confused

My father and I used to watch adult swim sometimes and would watch shows like Cowboy Bebop, GITS and and some other show i really do not remember at all. He also really enjoys Akira. My father has always like animation ( the Powerpuff Girls is one of his favorites)in general even as an adult so it was not to hard to get him into some show. Thats about it though.

As for my mother She thinks its neat that I'm into other cultures and that I'm interested in something different though she really only know the manga collection I have,as she's bought me some of them.

My mom thinks more highly of it now since she watched Paranoia Agent with me. She is a pretty open-minded person, in fact the suicide friends episode (the one I was worried would be too much for her) was her favorite episode!

My dad will never give it the time of day, but after overhearing the dialogue for a while now in certain shows he realizes most of it isn't for kids.

My sister won't ever watch it either (she did like Kiki's Delivery Service when it played on TV, but that was ages ago). It's practically impossible to get her to watch something unless her friends also are into it, which is a phase I hope she gets out of soon because such behavior is silly.

Since I lock myself inside my room about 85% of the time I'm home, my family members don't really know that I watch anime. They assume I just play games all day. The only person who has an idea that I watch anime is my older sister. She assumes it's all hentai though. I always try to clarify it is not, but she then assumes I praise Japan too much. I have a few relatives that know I watch anime, but I don't know their views on it. They don't watch anime much, but they watch the popular animes (DBZ, Gundam, Naruto, Bleach). I try to introduce them into more anime, but they think I'm an addict, which I don't mind being. In short, majority of my family don't know what anime is, and if they did, they would probably hold the stereotypical views of it.

I've never heard a single person talk about it. Not once. Nor do I read professional critics point it out other than a one sentence max. I'm not saying that they don't know what it is, I'm just saying that it's not a thing that people know (or care) to point out unless you explain what you mean.

Cool story,

Watch the non animated stuff, I think that's where you're going wrong and your Mum wouldn't be upset...Rolling Eyes

Can't argue with you there. But I think it's harder to appreciate it when it's done by animation because of the expectation that it's going to fun/hyperactive/silly etc...and some anime tends to takes itself slighlty more seriously then let's say pixar/disney films. So I can't blame my family or anyone else for that matter. It's something that takes adjusting to....

My family despises anime totally, calling it childish and a waste of time and money. My younger brother seems to like a lot of the things that came on in the mid nineties (Dragonball, Golgo 13) but isn't a very die hard fan at all, he prefers to watch Full House 24 hours a day. Looks like I'm all alone in my family.

If my wife had her way, anime wouldn't be inside the house at all. Not because it's "weird", but because it's animation, and she is definitely no fan of animation.

"It's for kids.", she'll say. Comically, I catch her watching over my shoulders every now and then, and request she sit down and watch, but her excuse remains the same: "I don't like those high-frilly voices."

Every once in a while, I'll throw in Pani Poni Dash and turn the volume up because she can't stand listening to Hilary Haag and "every time I hear that voice, I wish I were deaf. How can you stand that?"

Of course, I absolutely adore Hilary's voice. It's so cute!

She did bring up the high school girls question once, which I replied "Don't forget, these are made for children." and said it wasn't any different than Kim Possible (a show I dearly miss despite being branded by Disney).

Thank goodness this settled the matter. One day, she'll peer around the corner to take a few minutes of Strike Witches, which goes well beyond a high school setting given very few of the female cast wears pants.

Not sure how I'll defend this one, though sometimes an anime series needs no defense because it's just freakin' awesome on its own.

I will have to say, she's getting wise to my spending (curses!) as she noted my growing collection of 1/4 scale Lucky Star figures (it's not as though these things are easy to hide among other figures) and said, "These look like those girls from that show you watch alot. Not about the girls, huh?"

Okay, it's Kagami. Kagami. Of course it's about the cute!
Cool

My younger brother: He is Naruto fan, and we watched DB/DBZ together. He pretty much knows everything. But NOT that echi stuff Wink

Mom: She knows that I watch anime, and she doesn't mind it at all.

Dad: He doesn't even know what is anime....and he mistakes it for cartoons, of course.

Relatives: Some of them know and they don't care, as long as I don't get obsessed....
