I have compiled a list of manga from the encyclopedia on this site, which I might add is superb (no, I wasn't paid to say that >_>;; ), and was wondering which of it was actually worth buying. I have read a little manga (roughly a total of ten volumes) but watched a lot of anime. I've heard many things and was wondering about this stuff. Most of these seem to be pretty well-known while a few others are totally unheard-of, by myself at least. If you have any other manga that you would like to reccommend, I will accept it willingly. Masterpieces, Good manga, interesting manga and even some funny sub-par manga will do. Give me your thoughts, concerns, opinions, complaints, etc. Anime smile And remember, have a bad day!

Teh list:
Oh my Goddess!
Beserk
Escaflowne
Ghost in the Shell
Saiyuki
Evangelion
Angel Sanctuary
Azumanga Daioh
Blade of the Immortal
Mobile Suit Gundam

The above manga I strongly want and saw good reviews. Tell me if this stuff it really worth buying.

The lesser important list:
Chrono Crusade
Battle Vixens
Priest
Full Metal Panic
GTO
Fushigi Yugi
Getbackers
3x3 eyes
HunterxHunter
Kodocha
Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub)
RahXephon
Yugioh (I heard that this was actually a good manga despite its bastardized American TV rip-off)
Full Metal Alchemist
Ichi The Killer
Uzumaki
Ice Blade(Jiraishin)
Ki*Me*Ra
Orochi: Blood
Tactics
Kaze Hikazu

[EDIT - Lists of stuff tend not to do well, but this isn't QUITE a list thread, so I'll leave it up for now. Other mods are free to lock it, however. -C]

FMP! is great. Buy it.

Um...the Yugioh anime was made in Japan, so I'm not sure what you're talking about with the whole "bastardized American TV rip-off" unless somehow you mean that marketing a Japanese kids' show as a kids' show in America and removing all of the non-existent swearing and hardcore sex is bastardizing it.

Of the first list I would highly recommend Oh My Goddess! (if you don't want to start from the beginning, volume 16 is a pretty good intoduction), Berserk (volume 4 is the best place to start), Blade of the Immortal (the start is good, but can't compare to later volumes in writing and art) and Angel Sanctuary (haven't read too much, but so far its good). All these are great and three are among my favorite mangas. Appleseed is much better than Ghost in the Shell, but they are republishing it in a cheap format, so thats still a good read. Haven't read Eva, but Escaflowne can't hold a flame to the show. The rest I have varying opinions on, and feel that they aren't as good as the ones I mentioned.
The second list I would recommend Lone Wolf and Cub above all else. This is an all time classic. Full Metal Alchemist, 3X3 Eyes, Chrono Crusade, Fushigi Yugi and Uzumaki are all good. GTO and Getbackers are pretty good reads too. Jiraishin is also a great, hard boiled manga, but there are only three volumes out of 19 in English and they're censored from what I've heard, so don't go with the english version.

For the love of god, please read the Evangelion Manga. I'm probably in the minority, but I'll say it again, I liked it better than the anime.

Berserk. Read it. Be prepared, cause it truly doesn't hold much sacred, but its such a good story.

Missing from the list is the Hellsing Manga. Its much more fun and darkly mischievous than the Anime was, and I really enjoyed the first 3 volumes Dark Horse has released here in the states. The first two volumes basically run through the story from the Anime, while the 3rd continues the story onward (and has a wildly funny part where spoiler[the new troop trainer is accused by Victoria of Sexual Harassment over "singing this nasty cadence" which happens to be the "I don't know but I been told, Eskimo ***** is mighty cold" song ]Smile I'm impatiently awaiting Volume 4, which comes out at the end of the month.

Edit: misquoted my spoiler!

Well, I read mostly shoujo, and I can tell you that Fushigi Yuugi is excellent. In fact, anything by Watase Yuu is good. Anyway, Fushigi Yuugi was the series that got her famous. She drew it awhile ago, but the art is very good and I really love the story. But if you don't particularly like cry-baby heroines, then you might get annoyed at Miaka. The other characters are pretty kick-ass though. (Personally, I like Miaka, but it's hard to find someone who likes her...) Anyway, I would definately recommend it. Also, it was printed by Viz awhile ago, but they're reprinting it and volumes cost $10 instead of $16 and the they're right-to-left. So make sure you buy those (unless you want the others ones...) Oh yeah, I'd recommend Oh! My Goddess, Saiyuki, Evangelion, Angel Sanctuary, and Kodocha. So there ya go ~_^

Wait a minute....has this actually been published in English?!? If so, I love you forever. If not, I hate you and want you to die for getting my hopes up.

I agree with Kagemusha...Appleseed is much better than Ghost in the Shell (which I didn't really like, actually). Read that instead. Uzumaki is good, too.

Actually, yeah, some of those aren't out. Like HunterxHunter for instance. I know that's not out. When I went to France I bought my sister a few volumes because she wants it desperately and they don't have it here (yet). So, can you read other languages?

Lol, I'm not the best either. Yet I'm taking Japanese and French at the same time (what's up with that?)

I suck at language too, but maybe that was because of my teachers. First year was some pervert (I'm serious, this guy could have been an anime), second it was a lunatic (who was quite funny, especially when he swore at us in spanish), and third was another nut who would go on about the young women in the media being "slots" (the accent preventer her from pronouncing the word correctly). Damn you Boston Public!

Ah, to be new to the manga world…I remember it like it was yesterday. Actually, I can’t really say much when it comes to manga. Heck, I’m as much as a newbie as you are Sakatai. But there is a column I look forward to each and every week called Right Turn Only.

It’s a rather nice column. It’s newbie friendly, and what I mean by that; is that Liann often reviews new manga; therefore you wouldn’t be left in the dark on what’s out there or what you should look into.

Read RTO, it’s the best advice I could give.

I once had a Spanish teacher who wished the class a "Happy New Ass hole" (Feliz Ano Nuevo) when we came back from winter break.

A good column, but it unfortunatally usually only covers the new releases. Many of the thinks mentioned here have been out in english for a while. And many of the older thinks are amoung the best, as they were released here when a manga market was not nearly as big as it is today, so only stuff of exellent quality could get readers.
Yea, my second spanish teacher, despite being insane, could be witty. I especially like after a student would preform an exceptionally stupid action and he would say in his Spanish accent "god bless america" and give a laugh like he knew he was in hell and could do nothing about it. Of course, there was my one english teacher who actually did teach me things useful (he had the evilest sense of humor too, which I loved). I let him read a ton of manga and comics. His favorite was Domu. He showed me a ton of his old books on comic strip art, like Krazy Kat and The Phantom. Great (if slighly nutty) guy. I actually still go to visit him and let him borrow stuff (going to see what he thinks about Bone and Black and White this friday).

Teh list:
Oh my Goddess! - Nice story, artwork gets increasingly better with every volume
Beserk - Starts off kind of jumbled and disjointed, but is still keeping my interest.
Escaflowne - Eh...watch the series. The manga version is only worth a borrow in my eyes.
Ghost in the Shell - Great artwork. Story is a hit or miss for some people.
Saiyuki - Better than the anime and the artwork is very nice. Probably as it goes on, the series will become too tedious to justify devoting a large chunk of money towards.
Evangelion - If you're an Eva fan totally get this one. I'm not a diehard Eva fanatic, so I haven't actually bought this one, but I've read it up to the most current volume and I love it.
Angel Sanctuary - Whacked out but everyone needs a gloriously messed up gothic manga in their collection.
Azumanga Daioh - I think I'm one of the few who really can't stand this manga. Since I'm odd, you'll probably love it.
Blade of the Immortal - Started off slow to me, but it has a mighty devoted fanbase.
Mobile Suit Gundam - all of the gundam manga I've read have been rather boring.

The above manga I strongly want and saw good reviews. Tell me if this stuff it really worth buying.

The lesser important list:
Chrono Crusade - I have only read the first volume, but I like the feel of it so far. Too early to really judge. Seen the anime and liked it? The manga's probably worth your time.
Battle Vixens - Just say no to mammary missles.
Priest - Underrated manwha series. Tormented and unique art style...I like it so far.
Full Metal Panic - Fun stuff...FMP fans will tell you to buy it no matter what, more casual fans will tell ya to flip through it to see if you like it.
GTO - Long series, but it's unique in that it's totally down to earth. Since it's long, it's up to you if you want to put forth the money to collect all the volumes.
Fushigi Yugi - Hmm...one of those that everyone should read but doesn't neccessarily have to own. I'd go for Ceres instead.
Getbackers - Picks up steam after volume 4, I'd say go for it if you like gritty action stuff.
3x3 eyes
HunterxHunter - only skimmed some scanlations and would probably do really well over here.
Kodocha - Again, one of those that everyone should read, but doesn't neccessarily have to own. I own some of the series, but not all. I borrowed the rest Anime smile;.
Kozure Okami (Lone Wolf and Cub) - While I like the series...it's just soooooooo long that it would be really expensive to collect the whole thing.
RahXephon
Yugioh (I heard that this was actually a good manga despite its bastardized American TV rip-off) - manga is decent. I loved the first couple of volumes, but now it's just kinda a darker version of the show.
Full Metal Alchemist
Ichi The Killer
Uzumaki
Ice Blade(Jiraishin)
Ki*Me*Ra
Orochi: Blood
Tactics
Kaze Hikazu

The rest of the stuff I haven't read. But, that's my quick 2 cents.
As far as covering older manga...hopefully I can get some reviews of some up in the near future.

Liann, you're not the only one. I just don't understand what's so funny about AzuDai. It doesn't amuse me at all. It's aparently a hit or miss title, so I'd borrow it first or... read it in the store to find out if it's your cup of tea. ^^'

As to the rest, pretty much what Liann said, but I'll add my opinion to a couple more titles:

Chrno Crusade: As an anime it's ok, but the manga does a far better job on the story and characters, and it really got me hooked. I think volume 2 gets the story pumped up even better, and from then on... well, I was addicted, so most will probably enjoy it.

Uzumaki: I say this is a must buy for anyone whose a fan of Japanese horror. If you love really disturbing horror, like not the slashy kind, but the creep you out completely kind, I'd suggest you get this title. Also, the art I found to be really great, so from an artist perspective it's a really nice things to get.

Tactics: This title is pretty much unknown to most people. It's created by the same person who created Matantei Loki, and I suggest it as a must buy if you're a lover of Japanese mythology because it's filled with Japanese demons all over the place, and not in the Inu Yasha sense *as in not a ton of made up demons, but demons straight out of folkelore like tengu*. Story wise I'm sorry to say I haven't gotten very far past the first volume because of my lack of Japanese, but I loved what I've read of it.

Full Metal Alchemist - It has a really complex story with amazing characters. I suggest it to anyone.
