I really hope the expertise quality is given more weight than the rest. Having the most personality/pride/passion only makes you America's most annoying otaku. |

For some reason I was under the impression that this dog and pony show was over and done with. Oh well. I hope that it will show the rest of us in a favorable light. That may be wishful dreaming though, considering what some of the more 'enthusiastic' fans can be like.

Sounds like wonderfully awful train wreck television. Like Jersey Shore, but with anime nerds. As someone who doesn't like the term otaku anymore, partly because of TokyoPop and others over branding it, this sounds horrific. Yet is it horrific enough that I won't check it out on Hulu and give it one star?
And really, did Stu Levy really need to inflate his ego some more by making a TV show about himself through the flimsy excuse of a contest to send one geek to Tokyo for the worthless self deprecating title of America's Greatest Otaku? Then again I'm a little biased against the guy. Though only because everything he does is horrible. Van Von Hunter looked below par for a fan film. The Priest adaptation was so bad they needed to make a comic based on the movie. He wants to make an Americanized Lament of the Lamb in Three freaking Dee. There's the laughable TokyoPop creator contract the entire industry was disgusted at. And if you want to go way back, just look at the Initial D fiasco and his delusional spin about (the admittedly necessary) re-dubbing the music. This looks to be another one of his disasters. That and another reason I hate the word Otaku is that American fans fail to realize its origins. It's like the n-word for anime geeks. Actually, it's not even about anime and goes for any geek and Japanese Aspie hobbyist. It's got a very negative connotation in Japan and nerds there used it as a badge against the mainstream and media that labeled them as such. That the word is some positive label for anime fans is just a cheap marketing gimmick or at least a fan misunderstanding lost in translation. |

I have to go with Xenos on this one.
This show will undoubtedly turn out sad. It's not like they're going to have mature collectors who may or may not cosplay. Does TP really have the funding for this? The "films" they have created are terrible and it all seems like a waste of resources. They could be improving the quality of their manga or some other such nonsense instead. |

Oh dear heavens. That video was horrific. It's almost as bad as watching a bunch of gangsta rap crazed white kids auditioning to be on a show called America's Greatest [N-Word-Spelt-With-An-A]. It really does remind me of Jersey Shore where the show highlights people so far gone into 'Guido' culture, they look like feeble-minded freaks to everyone else. Funny how I enjoy manga or even cosplay as an exploration of character or design. Meanwhile TokyoPop seems to think it's an excuse to create a rock concert atmosphere and mindlessly shout catchphrases. Then again that's sadly what too many cons have become about instead of the actual anime and manga.
And TokyoPop improving their manga line? That would mean that Japanese companies would even still want to deal with their sorry butts. Most of the titles I've liked from them seem to be discontinued and forgotten. I hear from friends who like Hetalia, one of their few I was curious about, that the English version is awful. I even saw pixelation in the copy I thumbed through. The only one I picked up in recent years from TP was Quwaser of Stigmata and that was purely for guilty pleasure reading. It's so blasphemously bad it's good. |
