Actually, ADV didn't clean up the dub's pervertedness on the off chance it would make it to cable. They were asked by the Japanese licensor to do so.

Ah, thank you - it was idle speculation on my part. I wonder then why the Japanese licensor would have wanted it adjusted?

I have been collecting anime for over 10 years and back then I never thought I would be interested in a series such as this. I have all 3 volumes available and I must say that it is a must see. The plots and stories as simple as the review says but the way the characters overcome their challenges each episode is almost inspirational. The animation is beautiful and the whloe production is top notch. The only downside I can see was covered in the review, Ken's english VA is horrible in this role.

Agree. I also don't think that Cynthia Martinez is right for the role of Sora.

Right... I found Cynthia Martinez to sound a bit too whiny for her role in Sora... as if she was trying too hard to sound much younger. I think it's the director in this case though because I've seen (or heard) better performces in other dubs for most of the cast.

I was a little wary when I first heard of this show but after watching the first disc, I found Kaleido Star to be a pleasure to watch. The show is gorgeous and they did not skimp on the budget in Japan, I also enjoyed the dub but I am not too familiar with all the voice actors out there to know if they seem mis-cast.
As for the clean up of some language and inuendos, I have no problem with it. I read a comment elsewhere with a woman saying she shows it to her children. I just went back and watched the sub when the spirit of the stage is on camera. I give this show 3.5 out of 5 "yays!" coachk |

Well, I do appreciate your answer on that... I'd definetly see this as a reliable answer.
While I feel it was a bad move on the licensor's part, it's not the first (nor the last) time the Japanese have failed to understand the American audience. (IMO) |

Is Fool really perverted though? Bathing is a popular form of relaxation in Japan, so in a sense Fool is telling Sora "to relax". The comedic part is that Sora takes his comments the wrong way. Of course, Fool's an enigmatic character to begin with, so who knows what he's really thinking?
I think there was another instance of dub editing in the first episode, when the circus director first meets Sora on the street. On the sub track he comments on her nice-looking legs (or something else to that extent), and Sora calls him a pervert. In the dub he makes a less-sexual comment (maybe that she looks strong), and she calls him a weirdo. I'm sorry, it's been a couple of months since I saw DVD 1, so I don't remember their exchange exactly 
Anyway, I have mixed feelings about dub editing. I don't like tampering with the original material (whether the decision to do so was a Japanese or American one). On the other hand, my eleven year-old sister watched the dub and she didn't need to hear those comments. She would have enjoyed the dub no matter what the script was. While I don't think the comments were inappropriate for my sister, Kaleido Star does have the potential of attracting a young audience in America (even if only on DVD), and edits might be a safe bet for ADV and KS's Japanese licensor. |

It was Gonzo that asked ADV to edit thier dub with the unseen shower seen.
Speaking of Kaleido Star, I really wish the person who's in charge of the Encylopedia would post the actaully real TVTokyo air dates. Kaleido Star begin air in the Summer of 2002 Not 2003! It was a 3 year project that started in 1999 and costed Junichi Sato more then 8.1 billion yen($8 million)to produce. The second season begin air in October 2003 not in 2004 because the Japanese KS vol 5. DVD shows a special press junket with the marquee "Kaleido Star: New Wings, Comming October 4." |
