I bet a bajillion dollars that this has to do with the Japanese company having reverse importation fears.

Most likely. Guin Saga doesn't appear to have a BD release in Japan at all, and the licensors have already shown reluctance at letting North American licensees release BDs of shows that do have Japanese Blue-Rays.

I very much feel the same way. Now that anime is hitting BD, I'm more interested in getting it that way, especially something as epic as Guin Saga.
On a tangent: Does anyone know the possibility of a second season of this?

Nah, it's because the show dragged its feet. With that many novels out despite the recent passing of the author, one would expect significantly larger amount of material for a 26 episode series.

Dragged its feet? Are you nuts?
It covered _16_ novels in 26 episodes. Haruhi has covered 5 novels in 24 episodes and a movie.
The anime cut out and glossed over large parts of the story, simplifying things considerably from the original.
The problem in my opinion was it was tied back a bit from being the gritty, gorey pulp fantasy of the novels by airing on NHK in a time slot that didn't allow any blood

Then it should've been on NHK's equivalent of Adult Swim instead of Toonami.

In related news, me spending any money on S23 titles "has been postponed indefinitely due to circumstances beyond my control."
(That's not to say I'm boycotting them. This is just the only title of theirs I particularly wanted).

Hmm, interesting. I had been under the mistaken impression that virtually all releases in Japan over the last few years have been in both DVD and BD.
