This bears a strong similarity to the current supreme court case involving violent games and minors. The biggest problem with the law that California came up with there was that it was too vague in its definition of "overly violent" content and it has been deemed unconstitutional in district court and appellate court partly for that reason. But, just like this bill, the politicians can just revise it and bring it up again, and Leland Yee, the man responsible for the California law, has said he'd do just that if the Supreme Court strikes it down for being overly vague. (Personally, I'm hoping it is struck down entirely, but after reading what the judges said and asked, it seems like they're more concerned about the wording right now)
These types of things get really annoying when politicians try again and again on the same issue and just tinker with the wording to try to gain support. |

This is still just as vague. Anyway, I don't see the harm in shota/loli/whatever. It's not like actual children are being harmed. And it's better for pedophiles to read that instead of actual child pornography.

From what I read of the supreme court transcripts it seems there more worried about why only video games. They all seems to agree there is a point in restricting material to children, its just all but I think Roberts, kept asking why just video games.
I am fine with keeping stuff from minors as long as its applied equally and in a clear manor with some sort of public input so we don't end up banning 16 years old from reading Dragon Ball or Huckleberry Fin or an early Batman comic or To Kill a Mocking Bird, or ect. Also did they remove the part of the bill that would help to 'encourage' people to not publish such 'anti-social' material. That's the part that really scared me since it seemed to vague and was clearly not aimed carefully on purpose.... |

So far I've yet to see a link to the actual language of the bill. Everything is someone else reporting what the bill says, and it's caused so much confusion on these forums. Until I know exactly what it wants to ban (or if it's so vague it might ban everything) I reserve my opinion on the matter.
I will say, though, that if they whittle it down to a "don't sell porn to minors" deal I will support it. Though I imagine there are already laws in place to do that, making it redundant.
That's what worried me too, which is why the actual language of the bill would be nice to have so we don't go off on tangents arguing inconsequential things. |

Watch as it gets knocked down. Again. Hoo boy.
What I find ironic about most of these laws is that nobody ends up really enforcing it because the descriptions are so vague. Heh. Last edited by gapgapgap on Mon Nov 15, 2010 10:39 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Oh dear, not this crap again. When will Japan stop doing this. Great today I've read another censorship in Japan, Mafia 2 being censored in Japanover bare-breasted female and yet this is the same country that produce ecchi anime, and hentai and anime girls with big bust and yet they have to censor the game over this.
Back on topic: Why are they doing this? It already got shot down and now they want to bring it back again. |

While the Japanese politicians are wasting their time with this, Chinese politicians are busy comin' up with a way to bomb Japan to hell and make it look like an accident.
Conspiracy theory aside, I had completely forgotten about this ridiculous bill.... |

Japan is already well-known to just paying lip-service and not enforcing laws. Look at their prostitution laws (regardless whether you agree or not), or look at their gender equality laws (Japanese females are definitely not created equal).
Look at America's marijuana or same-sex marriage bills. |

Well, Japan or America have a number of laws are just political masturbation that truly don't get enforced properly and just lead to politicians calling new laws to get passed so they can get more pats on the back and terms in office. It's a vicious cycle that ends up avoiding any real solutions for the problems they claim to be tackling.
Though really, speaking of laws that are wastes of time, the whole "nonexistent youth" thing is total crap. As I keep saying, instead of prosecuting cases of real children actually being abused, the politicians are up in arms going after drawings on paper and thought crimes. And, yeah, I do see this as similar to violent game crusaders in America and Japan. it's real politicians trying to get real laws to arrest real people.. for fictional crimes? It just doesn't add up. |

You know, I had completely forgotten about that original version that they tried making back in March.
Opportunistic politicians are such a pain. Well, I got that off of my chest, now let's read some more Negima!... |

It would be wonderful if as some here say that these types of laws aren't ever enforced, but in truth they absolutely are enforced but in a small number of cases and rarely do these cases get public review or media coverage.
Those who do get these laws used against them have their lives forever ruined and if jail time is involved you are paying to subsidize their stay as well. This is why democracy is a huge failure. Term limits/etc/etc. may limit leviathan but it will never eliminate the desire of <insert> to temporarily gain some kind of concession or new law to prevent x or y that they don't like. "Big government" can do so much more evil than limited government (and by "limited" I don't mean the fake Republican version of that term where we have bases around the world and support the huge military-industrial corporate welfare program) |
