| My-Otome (TV) | Decent | I will never understand people who say/think, "If you liked My-HiME, you'll love My-Otome!" I LOVED My-HiME. (Mai-HiME, when I first saw it, in Japanese.) IMO, it's a Masterpiece. Putting aside the ending, it was an exquisitly tragic story. I remember thinking that "no one in any piece of liturature suffers so perfectly as these girls." The problem with My-Otome is that, rather than hiving their fate force dupon them, the girls work hard to become Otome! NOONE would actually WANT to be a HiME! Their fate is a trajic one! The Otome's fate might be trajic, but they CHOSE it, so it really take all the bight out of it. In keeping with this trend, the tone is totally different. Where My-HiME was serious, with slice-of-life moment and the occasional ecchi scene, My-Otome is wall-to-wall sillines and ecchi, with only the occasional serious scene, which just ends up seeming awkward and out of place. It's really not a sequel (or prequel) or ANYTHING to My-HiME. It's just an anime with a similar enough idea to look like a ripoff, but not close enough to really be considered the same thing. They could take out the cameos of the (re-written) My-Hime charecters and you wouldn't even miss them. And then it be honest about what it is: A so-so anime with some vague similarities to My-Hime. Without trying to sell itself as a My-Hime-Z (sequel) the expectations would be more realistic and this might actually suceed. Now, if I have all these criticisms, then why did I even rate it "Decent"? Well, thruth be told, it's not a terrible anime. The story and charecters ARE decent (or better) and if it wasn't trying so hard to be a cheap imitation of My-HiME, it might actually be pretty good. But rather than being a "Good" or "Very Good" magical girl story, it ends up a "Decent" (if that) rip-off of a true masterpiece. (Now...If you didn't like My-HiME... Don't bother with this one. All that is good about this series it shares with HiME, but most of what was GOOD about HiME is lost in Otome.) |
