Knights of Ramune
VHS Vol. 1 - Blast Off!

Am I the only one getting REALLY sick of stupid series that have absolutely nothing to offer at all besides lots and lots of fan service? Don't get me wrong, there's a time and a place for fan service, but when it's the show's ONLY redeeming quality, that is just not acceptable. I suppose that the company that released Aika shouldn't have any qualms about releasing something like this, but that doesn't make it any more fun to watch.
The plot involves two mega-busty anorexic-looking "Holy Virgins" (I guess the animators haven't gotten to them yet) Cacao and Parfait (who has a sarcastic squishy ball with eyes on her shoulder named Piqu) being sent through time and space to find the Fourth Warrior Ramunes, a mission that mysteriously forces them to undress a lot for reasons that aren't made clear. They find him running the bad guys, however, and with plenty of tyrranical plans. A slightly hyper orphan named Lemon quickly joins up after being rescued from the bad guys by the two, and becomes a reletively annoying sidekick (who makes a hobby out of torturing Piqu). Cacao becomes preoccupied with domestic duties (with supplies she pulled out of nowhere) while the other two try to figure out how to pilot some new Holy Magic-powered mechas. Ramunes takes a break from fondling his female subject's breasts to investigate their mecha, and makes his move accordingly... Knights of Ramunes (better known as NG Knight Lamune & 40 FRESH!) is actually spun off of a children's series from a few years back, with the main character being Lamuness, a kid who gets sucked into the world of video games. The series, although charming, became just another "villain of the week" show, but at least it was fun. Alas, this adult incarnation has nearly nothing in common with the original. The comedy, if it can even be called that, is flat and lackluster. To the show's credit, it makes no effort to hide its real purpose in life. The entire end sequence is a slow pan over various choice parts of Cacao and Parfait's anatomies. The characters are so out of proportion that they become ugly... think "anorexic Dolly Parton in zero gravity." The dub, in short, is sub-par. The dialogue starts out fine, but quickly becomes overacted and choppy, complete with mispronounciations (Ramunes is pronounced "Rah-myoons"), totally nonsensical dialogue and redundant lines. Knights of Ramune is trash, pure and simple. This one puts a stain on any anime collection. |
