Film to Tackle the Subject of Anime Culture in North America
Convention staff aim to create a documentary film about anime culture
THUNDER BAY, ON - March 13, 2013 - The film, OTAKU - A Film About Anime & Its Misunderstood Fandom, is a project that aims to celebrate anime culture and to also investigate the popular misconceptions that people may have about the anime fandom.
The project is the work of Daniel D'Amours and Michelle Poshtar, who are both convention staff for Kita-Kon in Thunder Bay, ON.
“I've been an anime fan for as long as I can remember” says Daniel, “and there have always been moments where I had to explain or defend my interest in anime. I want to make a documentary film that anime fans can enjoy, but can also be used to explain the medium to their friends and families.”
Michelle believes that the fandom has not received a proper film that documents the entire experience of being an anime fan.
“There hasn't been a lot of films or programs that feature anime fans. In most TV programs, anime is only a small feature of an episode, or the episode only displays a certain aspect of the fandom. Even when the anime fandom is featured, it usually represents it in a negative way. I believe we can represent the anime fandom in a positive way.”
The pair is looking to fund-raise a portion of the production cost of the film with the help of Indiegogo. Anyone who wants more information, or to support the film, are urged to visit the project page at indiegogo.com.
